ABS Light on Equinox?

  • Your Chevy Equinox’s ABS Light comes on when it fails a self diagnostic cycle. When on, it indicates that the Equinox does not have Anti-Lock brakes, and the safety they provide. Your Equinox’s ABS system uses a system of sensors to determine wheel speed when braking. If one of the wheels is starting to lock up, it’ll apply the maximum amount of brake to that wheel in order to keep it from sliding.

What does the ABS light mean on my Chevy Equinox?

What are the symptoms of an ABS system problem? When the ABS control module detects a fault, the ABS light, traction control light, and any manufacturer specific stability control lights will illuminate on the instrument cluster, alerting you to have the systems inspected for faults.

Is it OK to drive with ABS light on?

It’s Safe To Drive Carefully With The ABS Light On. You can still drive the car with your ABS light on, because it does not impact normal braking. However, we wouldn’t recommend you do this because your ABS system helps to control stopping, and it can be dangerous to be driving without it.

What causes ABS light to come on and stay on?

The four common reasons that typically cause this light to turn on include a malfunctioning ABS module, low levels in the fluid reservoir, broken wheel speed sensors, or the system is turned off. Your ABS actually shares some important components with another system in your vehicle: your traction control system.

How do you reset the ABS light on a Chevy Equinox?

How to Reset an Anti-Lock Brake Light

  1. Disconnect the positive cable from the car battery, and then hold down on the brake pedal to drain the car’s electrical system. This will reset the car’s central computer.
  2. Change the ABS sensor if the light comes back on.

How much does it cost to fix ABS light?

Many ABS components are very accessible, so labor for most repairs will not run high typically in the $100 to $150 range. A typical ABS sensor will cost about $80 to $125 however, on some makes and models the sensor is part of a hub/bearing assembly (GM, Ford, some others) and the price will rise to around $350.

What do you do when the ABS light comes on?

When the ABS light comes on, the first thing you should do is find a safe place to stop the vehicle, shut it off, and then start it up again. This will make the computer recheck all of the sensors for any abnormalities. Just like your computer at home, doing a simple reset may fix the issue and the light will shut off.

Does ABS light affect transmission?

The ABS sensors are related to the brakes. A bad sensor will make the ABS light to come on or the brakes will become unresponsive or possible even lock up. If your transmission is acting up with shifting at slower speeds, it could be a speed sensor or possibly the alternator with leaky diodes affecting the sensors.

Can AutoZone diagnose ABS light?

Unfortunately, the only way to check whether or not the problem is with the ABS is to go and get the codes of your car read. AutoZone can scan your codes as part of our Fix Finder service, or you can do it yourself if you already have a scan tool.

Is ABS warning light serious?

The ABS warning light is a sign that the system might be compromised. Every time a vehicle is started, the ABS light will come on momentarily as the system does a diagnostic self-check. If the light does not illuminate, the warning lamp bulb could be defective.

Can a fuse cause ABS light to come on?

5. Blown Fuse or Stuck Bulb. Sometimes a blown fuse to the ABS can cause the light to come on and stay on. Fuses are easy to blow, so sometimes it’s an easy fix to check.

Can Dirty brake fluid cause ABS light to come on?

#2 – Unresponsive Hydraulic Pump or Valve One of the causes of this internal wear could be the dirt brake fluid. This could make ABS light to come on.

Can low battery cause ABS light to come on?

Problem Description A weak battery can cause the ABS light to turn on. A brake light that is not working or has burned out can also cause the ABS light to illuminate.

What causes ABS to fail?

The most common ABS problems occur when sensors become contaminated with debris or metal shavings. Malfunctions also occur when sensor wiring becomes damaged, resulting in intermittent or no continuity. If you have a malfunction in the ABS, physically check all wiring and the brake sensors first.

Will disconnecting battery reset ABS light?

Resetting Your ABS Dashboard Warning Light Step One: Disconnect the positive cable from your car battery. Then, hold down the brake pedal to drain the vehicle’s electrical system. This will result in a reset of the car’s central computer. If there’s no remaining problem with the system, this should reset the light.

Chevy Equinox: ABS Light Meaning & Diagnosis

When your Chevy Equinox’s ABS Light illuminates, it means that the vehicle has failed a self-diagnostic cycle. This light shows that the Equinox does not have Anti-Lock brakes, and hence does not give the further safety that these brakes would provide. When braking, your Equinox’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) makes use of a network of sensors to calculate wheel speed. The system will apply the greatest amount of braking to a wheel that is starting to lock up in order to prevent the vehicle from sliding.

A side effect of skidding tires is that they cause flat patches in the tire, which may be both annoying and potentially hazardous.

Is it Safe to Drive Your Equinox?

The ABS light is distinct from the brake warning light on the car’s dashboard. A malfunctioning physical braking system implies that your Equinox is risky to use due to the presence of the brake light. Yes, you may operate your Equinox when the ABS light is illuminated. Is it safe to use? Particularly hazardous is driving when it is pouring, snowing, or the road surface is loose or uneven. It is also less convenient. As a result, we urge that you get the ABS system repaired as soon as feasible.

Chevy Equinox ABS Light On Causes

A decent code scanner will frequently be able to tell you which portion of the ABS system is malfunctioning. This information will not be provided by every OBDII scanner, however. A good one will take care of you. In most cases, car parts retailers will provide you with a free scanning service that they would be pleased to let you take use of. The following are the three most prevalent reasons for the ABS light to illuminate:

1.Wheel Speed Sensor

The wheel speed sensors are in charge of monitoring the wheel speed and transmitting that information back to the computer system for analysis. If one of the wheels is moving more slowly than the others, it is on the verge of locking up completely. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is then activated on that wheel to prevent it from locking. When this sensor is no longer transmitting a signal to your Equinox’s anti-lock braking system, the system is no longer operating correctly, and the ABS light will illuminate on the instrument panel.

2.ABS Module

The ABS module is responsible for the operation of the antilock braking system. This module is responsible for the physical control of the anti-lock braking system. The ABS light will illuminate if the system gets broken and is no longer capable of controlling all four brakes. Corrosion is the most prevalent cause of module failure, according to industry standards.

3.ABS Fluid Level

The ABS light will illuminate if the fluid level in the ABS lines is too low to maintain pressure in the lines. The ABS will no longer be able to physically activate if the pressure is not maintained.

Conclusion

It is not recommended that you ignore the ABS light on your Chevy Equinox.

The majority of the time, the wheel speed sensors will be the ones that set off the alarm. If you have anything to add, please leave a comment in the section below the article. Wishing you the best of luck!

ABS Sensor Problem?

I experienced a similar issue with a 2002 Denali that had roughly 130K on the odometer. The front brakes (perhaps just on the right) would grind and pound in the pedal when the vehicle approached a parking location. The ABS light would turn on and off at random intervals, but it never remained illuminated. I eventually brought it to a General Motors dealership for fear of ruining the rotor. The diagnosis is corrosion of the front wheel sensor. Because the left side was in a similar situation, the result replaced both.

  • NOTE: When service personnel refer to a speed sensor, they might be referring to one of two things.
  • The second object to which they may be referring is the ring located at the rear of the hub, from which the sensor actually reads rotational information.
  • Inquire with your technician as to what it is.
  • The second option often entails the purchase of new hubs, which is somewhat more expensive.
  • In order to reach everything, you may either disassemble the wheel and scrub the areas that are accessible with a toothbrush or brass brush, then rotate the wheel to work on another portion, and so on until you have done a full 360 degrees.
  • Use of a steel brush is not recommended since the magnetism of the assembly will hold wire bits, which will be difficult to remove when the hub is mounted on the vehicle and may interfere with sensor readings if done so.
  • To summarize, if you take your Equinox to a repair shop, especially if it is a 2010-2012 model, bring this document with you to avoid getting charged for a number of parts and labor that were not actually necessary: Chevrolet Equinox (model year 2011).

What is a Wheel Speed Sensor?

Wheel speed sensors are a component of your vehicle’s brake system, which, as you are probably aware, is a critically crucial component of your vehicle. So, what is the function of this speed sensor? You’re in luck, because it’s a really basic process. The wheel speed sensors in your automobile keep track of the pace at which the front and rear wheels of your vehicle are moving. A sensor is installed on the hub of each wheel, exactly close to the brakes, and it is used to control the wheels. Each sensor communicates with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) control module via sending data.

  • The system then compensates for any wheels that are not operating at optimal speed.
  • Simple.
  • As a result of its ability to monitor wheel speed, the ABS system is able to prevent your wheels from locking up when you apply the brakes, so preventing the automobile from spinning out.
  • Let’s get to the bad news first.
  • Because the sensor is placed near the wheel and close to the road, it is subjected to a great deal of dust, dirt, debris, and other things that are thrown up by the vehicle.

Because of this form of wear, it is common for a sensor to fail and require replacement. There are also four of them in your car, which means.well, four times the wear and tear on the speed sensor, as well as four times the likelihood of having an ABS repair.

Symptoms of a failing Wheel Speed Sensor

We understand what you’re saying. When it comes to warning lights, they are often overlooked, yet they are there for a reason. The fact that they notify you when something is wrong with your automobile indicates that they are only attempting to keep you and your vehicle safe on the road. So, perhaps you should quit ignoring them? If your wheel speed sensor needs to be replaced, you may notice that your traction control, stability control, or anti-lock braking system lights are lighted.

Speedometer doesn’t work

This is a somewhat uncommon symptom, although it can occur in some automobiles, particularly older ones. If your speedometer is not working, it is possible that the problem is due to a malfunctioning speed sensor. In order to avoid this, have your automobile serviced and slow down – you’re going faster than you realize.

Anti-lock brakes stop working

Your anti-lock brakes may not function properly if your wheel speed sensors are not operating properly. I truly hope you do not find out the hard way about this. Consequently, using the brakes suddenly may cause your wheels to lock up and cause you to slide or lose control of your vehicle.

Traction control and stability control stop working

When the wheel speed sensors fail, the automobile will frequently switch off the traction control, the stability control, and/or other driver assistance systems. Consequently, if you notice that such functions aren’t working, or that they’ve been switched off, it’s a large red sign pointing in the direction of your wheel speed sensors. Request a Quote Warranty for 12 months or 12,000 miles.

How urgent is a Wheel Speed Sensor replacement?

In the event that you’ve made it this far and still believe that anti-lock brakes and traction control aren’t that vital, I’m not sure what I can say to you. Those systems play a critical role in the overall safety of your car, as well as your own personal safety. Leaving the wheel speed sensors damaged may result in a significant loss of safety while driving in inclement weather or when slamming on the brakes in an emergency situation. And that’s a problem. It’s a terrible situation. You’re well aware of what has to be done.

Chevy Equinox Growling In Front End And ABS Light On Dash

A common occurrence among technicians is the failure of the hub bearings of the vehicle. This part is changed virtually every day at our shop on nearly every type of car, whether it is causing the Antilock Brake (ABS) signal to illuminate or just producing a dreadful grinding or growling noise while driving. Today I had a ChevroletEquinox in the shop, which is a car I see on a regular basis. The client was dissatisfied with both the fact that the ABS indicator was illuminated and the fact that the vehicle was loud.

  1. Sometimes highly worn tires might create the same sort of noise, but with a little practice, it is generally possible to tell the difference between the two.
  2. Getting the Equinox jacked up so I can hoist it in the air is a huge help because it allows you to have the drive wheels rotating as you reach beneath the vehicle and listen to each hub individually.
  3. As part of the scan, I looked for fault codes in the ABS system and discovered a C0035 code for the left front wheel speed sensor, which was previously unidentified.
  4. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept of hubs, allow me to provide some background information.
  5. Because it is a sealed device, the ‘bearings’ contained within it are not maintainable.
  6. Inside, there are windings and/or a reluctor ring that are responsible for transmitting the signal to the rest of the system.
  7. Most of the time, it is the hub assembly that has failed, but there have been occasions when the wire outside of the hub region and up into the real ABS harness has failed.

When diagnosing this sort of condition, it is important to look at all of the possibilities.

Removal of the brake caliper and rotor, as well as the axle nut and holding hardware for the hub itself, as well as disconnection of the ABS harness connections, are required for replacement.

Because they are made of two different metals, steel and aluminum, they corrode at a rapid rate and essentially get fused together.

Personal experience has included a hub becoming so badly adhered to the knuckle that a press was required to separate the two, which resulted in the knuckle being broken in two.

They continued on their way, content with the fact that their ABS system was correctly operating and that the dreadful noise they had been experiencing had been eliminated.

Another client who is pleased with their purchase! The ABS light is illuminated and there is a grinding noise in the front end. The ABS light is illuminated and there is a grinding sound. Leave a comment below or check out these resources.

The way your car swaps gears can be different when it’s not performing correctly, and you might notice that your vehicle has lost power if it’s not running properly. In addition, you should see a dashboard light that resembles a car with curved tire marks behind it on the right side of the screen. This light informs you of important information regarding the Stabilitrak system.

Once Stabilitrak has been turned off, you’ll see the identical sign with the word OFF beneath it.

If this occurs, you might try to bring the car to a complete stop, switch off the engine for 15 seconds, and then restart it.

2006 Equinox Has ABS Traction Control Lights On

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to respond to my query. Chevrolet Equinox 2006, which I purchased new off the showroom floor at Parks of Augusta, Kansas dealership ship. The oil changes and other service fixes, such as the extremely expensive heater blower item that every owner of a 2006 Equinox has experienced, have always been handled by this company. My current issue is with the anti-lock braking system and traction control. My ABS and traction lights have begun to illuminate, and while I was driving and using the brakes, my real ABS system would activate, and it appeared as though I would not be able to stop.

A brake examination was performed at no cost by the dealer, and I had it linked up to a code machine at the dealership.

I paid for it to be completed.

I contacted the dealer ship and they reset the codes once more.

The ABS and traction lights illuminated when I was driving back to my house from the dealership, and when I reached for the brake, the ABS system activated, and it appeared as though the vehicle would not start.

While this is understandable, I cannot afford to be without my car for an extended period of time, nor do I have the time to travel with them because I must put in extra hours at work to pay for these repairs.

Answer: They may have a problem with the wiring harness on that side if they continue to receive the same codes for the same issue on that side over time.

It would be beneficial to be familiar with the codes that are stored in the computer. I would guess that the codes are for one of the circuits that control the front speed sensor. Either the signal is “Open,” “Shorted,” or the signal is incorrect.
