Chrysler minivan wiper problems?

  • If you have Chrysler minivan wiper problems, all you need to diagnose the problem is a digital multimeter. Chrysler minivans use two different systems, depending on the model year. For 1996 1997 models, start your diagnostics by turning on the ignition key and put the wiper switch in any position EXCEPT high.

Why are my windshield wipers malfunctioning?

A torn windshield wiper is the most common cause of wiper malfunction. When the rubber edges on your wiper blades are torn, the wiper cannot move smoothly across your windshield and remove moisture or debris. Torn wiper blades almost always require immediate replacement.

How do you know if your wiper relay is bad?

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Intermittent Wiper Relay

  1. The windshield wiper blades have one speed.
  2. The windshield wiper blades don’t work.
  3. Wiper blades operate at speeds different than you selected.
  4. Humming noise when the wipers are on.

How do I reset my windshield wipers?

Your wipers may need resetting due to loosening up over time, or being forced out of position when an abnormal amount of stress was placed on the wipers, such as clearing large chunks of ice. Resetting the wipers involves removing the wiper linkage and manually placing the blades in the right position.

How can you tell if a wiper motor is bad?

Use the fuse pattern shown on the cover and locate the wiper motor fuse. Test the fuse using your twelve volt test light. Clip the ground lead to a solid ground source and touch the positive lead to each side of the fuse. If the test light lights up on both terminals, the fuse is good.

What are the common faults on the windshield wiper system?

Be sure to clean any snow or ice from your wipers before attempting to use them. A buildup of snow or ice can cause problems like bent wiper blades, wiper arms that skip, or a blown fuse and other issues with the wiper motor.

How much does it cost to fix a windshield wiper motor?

You will pay between $230 and $310 for a windshield wiper motor replacement. The cost of labor on this job will be between $50 and $70, while the cost of parts should be between $180 and $250.

How do you test a wiper relay?

If no continuity, as the solenoid is powered, then the relay is bad. If you suspect the switch, simply turn the switch ‘on’ and check for 12 volts from the switch output to any body ground. If 12 volts are not measured, then the switch is bad.

Where is the wiper relay?

In some vehicles, the wiper relay switch is inside the actual windshield wiper motor. If it fails, the entire motor needs to be replaced, as you can’t get parts to fix it.

Where is the wiper control module?

Some mechanics refer to the wiper module as the wiper governor module. It is located underneath the dashboard, above the brake and accelerator pedal, and is responsible for the complete operation of the windshield wiper system.

What would cause my windshield wipers to not turn off?

Why Wiper Blades Won’t Turn Off Faulty Relay: Every windshield wiper system has an internal electric switch mechanism called a relay. Faulty Park Switch: When the park switch fails, the system no longer tells the wipers to stop at the bottom of the windshield, and they often won’t stop at all.

Can wiper motors be repaired?

There’s no recourse but to replace these. Unfortunately, some of these parts have no part number from the dealer, requiring you to replace an entire expensive assembly—or improvise.

Chrysler minivan wiper problems

There are several wiper difficulties with Chrysler Minivans. These range from wipers that won’t shut off to wipers that are intermittent and stop operating. Using a digital multimeter, you can identify wiper problems on a Chrysler minivan with ease. Chrysler minivans are equipped with two distinct systems, which change according to the model
year. Start your diagnostics on 1996-1997 models by turning on the ignition key and moving the wiper switch to any position other than the highest setting.

As a result, the wipers should now operate at a ‘low’ speed.

If they are unable to run at a low pace, it is necessary to inspect the fuses and electrical wiring.

After that, look at the intermittent area of the system to see if anything is wrong.

  • As the voltage flows through a series of resistors, it is detected by the BCM on the black/white line, which is connected to the battery.
  • Delay1 should be 1905-1915 ohms, delay2 should be 995-1005 ohms, delay3 should be 612-622 ohms, delay4 should be 387-391 ohms, delay5 should be 254-258 ohms, and delay6 should be 155-157 ohms.
  • As the BCM ages, shops are reporting that it puts out a lower voltage on the dark green/red wire, and the resistors reduce that voltage to the point where the BCM is unable to detect the voltage any more.
  • When the wiper switch is turned off, it will draw no current, and when the wipers are turned on, it will drain just a little amount of current.
  • The symptom in this case is that the intermittent wipers work for a short period of time before the delay part ceases to function.
  • This is another issue that these minivans frequently encounter.
  • A voltage signal is sent from the BCM to the park switch through the dark green/white wire, and when the switch is closed, the voltage should decrease to zero.
  • If you do not notice a decline to zero, the wiper motor should be replaced.
  • Instead of delivering electricity to the MFS from the BCM for intermittent operation, the MFS now receives power from the PDC, which is an improvement.
  • Almost usually, either a defective MFS or a corrosion-damaged PDC is at blame for this.

In fact, I’d put my money on a corroded PDC, especially if the wipers are just shutting off occasionally and not at all on other occasions. That’s a symptom of corrosion on the surface. Rick Muscoplat was born in the year 2012. Rick Muscoplat posted a blog entry on

Fixing the rear wiper arm on second generation minivans.

How to replace the rear wiper arm on a Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Caravan, or Plymouth Voyager minivan by Bill Buttermore. As is the case with any repair, Allpar cannot guarantee your success or the accuracy of the information you are provided. You should proceed at your own risk. I’d like to relate my experience with removing the rear wiper arm from my 1994 Chrysler TownCountry van, which turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated. This process should only be performed when the rear wiper arm has become ‘frozen’ on – that is, when it has become stuck and is unable to be removed using conventional means.

  1. Additionally, you will want penetrating oil.
  2. Between the arm and the end of the shaft, there will be a little amount of space.
  3. Lift the wiper arm away from the window and pry up the tang with your fingernail.
  4. In order to bear on the end of the motor shaft, you must use a strong, short pin.
  5. Insert the pin through the hole.
  6. With a few turns of the crank, the unnaturally frozen arm pops off off the table.
  7. A small dab of RTV silicone in the hole will help to keep the water from getting in.

5.0 stars out of 5 for this product Perfect fit and simple installation Purchased on March 15, 2020 in Canada and reviewed on March 15, 2020 Perfect fit and excellent performance! I did everything myself and was able to save a significant amount of money as a result. It’s important not to discard the mounting bushing from the old motor because new one does not come with them. The only concern I have is that this unit is significantly noisier than my old OEM motor. However, this is a minor detail.

1998 Dodge Caravan Electrical Problem – Phantom Ghost Wipers

Regarding the wipers, the following is taken directly from a service repair handbook. It is the Body Control Module that is in charge of continually monitoring and controlling the windshield wiper circuits (BCM). A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in the BCM memory if a fault arises with the electrical components, wiring, switch (excluding the inbuilt motor park switch), or wiper motor. DTCs can be recovered with the use of a scan tool (DRB). PARK SWITCHI HAS FAILED It will be necessary to run the windshield wipers in the following ways if the wiper park switch has failed: TURN OFF —Wipers will remain in their present place regardless of whether or not the park signal is received.

  1. WIPERS WORK AT LOW SPEED —Wipers function at a slow speed.
  2. PULSE WIPE —Wipers will not function properly.
  3. Wipers only work when the wash button is pushed with the switch in the OFF position; when the button is released, the wipers stop in the middle of their cycle.
  4. When the switch is turned off, the motor will not come to a halt.
  5. Faulty switch- Inspect the switch in the low, high, and intermittent positions (this has been ruled out because the switch has been replaced).
  6. There is a problem with the relay.
  7. 3.
  8. Your grounds will be located under the wiper box on each corner of the firewall, which will account for the majority of your grounds.

Is There a Ghost in the Machine?

A defect investigation into the subject has been opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Chrysler models that include Totally Integrated Power Modules (TIPMs), after a petition by the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) to the government. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Chrysler Automobile Club of America have received complaints from Chrysler owners reporting incidences of engine stall or non-start, erratic windshield wiper activity and power window movement, among other things.

When the vehicle is not in motion, the horn sounds, wipers begin to operate while the vehicle is not in motion, the air conditioning blower stops working, the engine cooling fan ceases to operate, the brake light, reverse light, and parking light flicker, the locks lock and unlock on their own, and the key fob will not operate on them.

The previous time this happened, it completely destroyed my battery.

According to a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, ‘Not only have Chrysler’s faulty TIPMs caused vehicle stalling, but they have also been linked to airbag non-deployment, randomly activated horn, headlight, taillight, door lock, instrument panel, and windshield wiper activity, power windows going up and down on their own, failure of the fuel pump shut off, resulting in unintended acceleration, and fires.’ According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, ‘the Center for Auto Safety has petitioned the NHTSA to open a defect inquiry into failures linked with the TIPMs installed in Chrysler SUVs, trucks, and vans beginning with the 2007 model-year.’ According to the petition, ‘CAS has received 70 complaints about Chrysler TIPM failures, all of which are purportedly connected to Chrysler TIPM problems.’ According to authorities, CAS has identified 24 crashes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Early Warning Reporting (EWR) database that may have been caused by a suspected TIPM failure.

The petitioners have requested that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) analyze these studies as part of the petition examination.

‘On several occasions, the windshield wipers began to run and warning lights flashed inside the vehicle, and the windows went down without being powered, and the doors opened and shut themselves,’ a vehicle owner reported to the California Automobile Safety Commission.
