How do I reset my throttle body adaptation?
The steps:
- Push Engine button ON (once; do not start engine)
- Step on the throttle pedal down (all the way down)
- Hold it there for 30-40 seconds.
- With throttle still down, push Engine button OFF.
- Release throttle.
- Wait 2 minutes.
- Start car normally. Done.
Do throttle bodies need to be programmed?
In fact, on some engines a new throttle body needs to be programmed with a factory, or equivalent, scan tool. The technician cannot even clean the carbon out of the throttle body in some cases without setting a ‘check engine’ light.
How do you relearn a Nissan idle?
Turn the ignition switch on and wait 3 seconds. Immediately after the 3 seconds, the accelerator pedal must be pressed and released 5 times within 5 seconds. Wait 7 seconds and fully press the accelerator pedal and hold for approximately 20 seconds until the check engine light stops blinking and stays on.
Do you have to reset computer after replacing throttle position sensor?
After replacing the throttle body to your engine, if the engine light was on and has a pending code, the code will go away. If the code was a hard permanent code, then the ECM (computer) would need a hard reset. The engine light will go out and clear all codes as it goes into a learn cycle.
Does a new throttle body add horsepower?
Gains from a throttle body can be dependent on modifications. Generally speaking, anytime a throttle body is added, there will be some added horsepower. The amounts can range from 5-25 HP depending on what other modifications are done to the engine.
How do you reset the ECU on a Nissan Altima?
Turn the ignition switch to the on position but do not start the car. Count three seconds and then press the gas pedal to the floor and let it up five times in five seconds or less.
How do I relearn my throttle position sensor?
The easiest way to reset your throttle position sensor is to unhook the negative cable from your battery for up to five minutes or to remove the fuse for your engine control module.
Nissan Throttle Body Relearn Procedure
A Nissan Throttle Body Relearn Procedure must be performed if you own a 2002-2011 Altima and have cleaned or replaced the throttle body or replaced the ECU. This procedure is required in order to get a suitable idle speed. This procedure is referred to as the Idle Air Volume Learning Procedure by Nissan. In addition, you can use this approach if you believe your idle speed is out of specification. Conditions that must be met include: Before trying a Nissan Throttle Body Relearn Procedure , it is necessary to ensure that the following requirements are met: When the engine is operating at idle, the battery voltage must be more than 12.9V.
The vehicle must be in Park or Neutral at all times.
The vehicle’s speed must be zero.

Nissan Idle Relearn Procedure
Modern Nissan automobiles are equipped with an electronic throttle body (ETB), which is completely controlled by the vehicle’s on-board computer. You will need to have the computer re-learn the position of the throttle plate after replacing an ETB in order for the vehicle to retain the proper idle speed. Other maintenance, such as a battery replacement and an ETB clean-up, might sometimes cause the idle to act up unexpectedly. This issue may cause the Service Engine Soon light (also known as the ‘check engine light’) to illuminate and the trouble code P0507 – Idle speed control system RPM to be greater than intended to be stored.
- STEP 1: LEARNING THE POSITION OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASE 1) Do not depress the accelerator pedal until the car has stopped.
- 3) Hold the key in the ‘OFF’ position for 10 seconds before releasing it.
- 5) Hold the key in the OFF position for 10 seconds before turning it back on.
- 3) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and listen for the throttle body to make a whining sound.
- 2) While the car is at idle, check to see that the battery voltage is more than 12.9 volts.
- 4) Turn off the car.
- 6) Do not pressure the accelerator pedal at any point.
8) Quickly press the accelerator pedal five times in five seconds to accelerate.
10) The check engine light should be illuminated.
12) When the engine light stops flashing, immediately depress the accelerator pedal for three seconds.
14) Rev the engine a couple of times.
16) Verify that the check engine light is not on.
The importance of timing cannot be overstated.
Before beginning the operation, the Service Engine Soon light must be turned off for at least 30 seconds by detaching the battery wire from the vehicle.
If the idle starts acting up all of a sudden, it is possible that something else is causing the problem.
Given that there are no special instruments required for the technique, you should go ahead and try it to see whether it solves the problem for you.
However, if the same ailment persists or recurs, you can begin identifying the condition based on the codes recorded in the notes you took before to the surgery.

I need some assistance with this; it’s a silly problem, but it’s driving me insane. Earlier this week, I dismantled my throttle body and ported and cleaned it. Since 2006, I have been porting and polishing everything from dirt bike heads to intake manifolds and cylinder heads, among other things. The main point is that I am not claiming any sort of stupidity with the porting (i.e. the port where the butterfly is located) at this point. Anyway, I now have the code for a high idle time. I’ve gone through the relearn method at least seven times and it simply won’t stick.
- When you get to the conclusion of the relearn and have to start the car and let it idle, the car idles perfectly, at a speed of around 750 rpm.
- I’m not sure what else I can do in this situation.
- And it is effective.
- Do you think it’s possible that I screwed up the electronics in the TB when I cleaned it?
- Is there something I’m overlooking here, such as another procedure?
troubleshooting failed throttle relearn
Thank you so much, Rogoman. I’d previously attempted the retraining method (including warming up, etc.) a few times without success before this. There are other variants of this recipe available online, and I’ve included the one that worked best for me in the section below. It entails placing the automobile in Drive as quickly as possible after starting it in Park, but not immediately (see below). In addition, I’ve included a simple approach for turning off the Check Engine Light once the operation is complete.
- CONDITIONS: While cleaning the throttle body, the Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates with the P0507 fault code and the engine runs at a high/pulsating idle speed after removing and reconnecting the electrical to the throttle position controller.
- 1.
- 2.
- Despite having rather high base rpm in drive, I managed to drive around my neighborhood for a little less than 10 minutes.
- 4.
- Start the stopwatch and turn the key on (not the ignition) at the same time.
- When the stopwatch reaches three seconds, hit the accelerator pedal five times hard and swiftly.
When the stopwatch reaches 15 seconds, depress the accelerator pedal and hold it there for 30 seconds.
When the timer reads around 27 seconds, the solid CEL fades out and the flickering CEL begins.
If the CEL does not begin to blink, it indicates that something is not operating properly, and you should start afresh.
As soon as the CEL becomes solid again (i.e., stops blinking) after approximately 10 seconds, start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes.
10.
11.
Idle speed will now be significantly lower than 1000rpm.
The car will purr like a fairly quiet kitten once more.
It may simply disappear on its own, or you may do the following steps: RESETTING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS SIMPLE (CEL) 1.
2.
3.
4.
Release the accelerator as soon as the indicator begins to blink.
5. After 10 seconds, completely depress the accelerator pedal once again. 6. Hold the accelerator down for 10 seconds before releasing it again. 7. Turn the ignition key to the off position and quickly start the engine. The CEL should be no longer be present.
How to Do a Nissan Altima Idle Relearn
Mario Tama/Getty Images News/Getty Images Mario Tama/Getty Images The Nissan Altima received an electronic throttle body as standard equipment in 2003. You must undertake a relearn operation whenever the battery is disconnected or when the computer or throttle body are replaced or upgraded. Some procedures must be completed with a cold engine, while others must be completed with a warmed-up engine. If following this step-by-step approach does not result in a smooth idle, it is likely that there is another problem with the engine.
Step 1
Switching on the ignition switch and waiting at least two seconds before turning it off and waiting a further ten seconds are the only ways to start the car without using the accelerator. After that, turn the ignition switch on for at least two more seconds before turning it off again.
Step 2
Turn the ignition switch on again and wait two seconds before turning it off again and waiting another ten seconds. It is important that you can hear the electric motor on the throttle moving at this point. It will create a buzzing sound when it is turned on.
Step 3
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes until it reaches operating temperature. Turn off the engine and wait at least 10 seconds before starting again. Turn on the ignition without touching the accelerator, but do not start the engine, and wait three seconds before continuing.
Step 4
Within five seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal five times, with the pedal totally depressed at the conclusion of each cycle. Now, push the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor for 20 seconds, or until the service engine soon light stops flashing and is illuminated solidly on the instrument panel. It is necessary to release the pedal within three seconds of the light becoming solid. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 20 seconds before revving the engine a few times to ensure that the idle speed returns to normal.
