What does that mean?
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a general powertrain code, which means that it applies to any cars that are equipped with the OBD-II diagnostic system (Dodge, Ram, Ford, GMC, Chevrolet, VW, Audi, Toyota, etc.). Despite the fact that they are general, the particular repair processes may differ based on the make and model. If your vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic system has discovered a problem in the pressure sensor circuit of the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system, the code P0451 merely indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has recognized the issue.

Starting with a visual check of the EVAP system’s hoses and lines, as well as the electrical harnesses and connections, is my preferred method of starting. I pay particular attention to components that are routed near sharp edges or that are subjected to high temperatures. During this process, it is also recommended to remove the fuel cap and examine the seal.

This is the gasoline tank pressure sensor (which is also a pressure sensor, similar to the MAP/TMAP sensors) that links to the evap charcoal canister in the engine compartment ( 24 in the diagram).

Think this is a diagnostic code on the pressure sensor before the car performs any evap testing?
Was it under the tank or on top of the charcoal canister?

The canister, purge solinoid, vent solinoid, and fuel tank pressure sensor are all components of the system.

Ford Edge P0451: EVAP Pressure Sensor → Range/Performance
P0451 is the same as all other OBD-II fault codes in that it has the same meaning for all cars. It indicates that the EVAP system in your Ford Edge has a pressure sensor that is not operating properly in some way. P0451 is typically caused by a faulty EVAP pressure sensor, a blocked fuel tank relief valve, clogged EVAP lines, clogged EVAP wiring, or a faulty fuel cap, among other things. There might be a variety of different reasons for this. We’ll go through them in further detail below. Edge P0451 Symptoms
In most cases, P0451 will have no effect on the way your Edge operates or behaves. The fuel economy may drop a little, and the service engine soon light will most likely illuminate. In addition, you may detect a faint gas smell. Check for other EVAP-related issue codes first and see if addressing those might assist with the resolution of this one.
P0451 Causes: Ford Edge
Here are some of the most prevalent causes of P0451 in general, as well as some specific reasons.
The most straightforward place to begin troubleshooting P0451 is to examine the fuel filler cap. Because a missing, damaged, or improperly tightened fuel cap might cause your Edge to display this code, it’s a good place to start looking. A recent “tighten fuel cap” notice, even if the fuel cap was previously snug, is a strong sign that there may be a problem with the fuel cap. EVAP Lines and Wiring
EVAP system pipes and hoses are the next location to search for something that might be causing P0451 in your Edge to occur. Pay close attention to any points where they link to other things, travel near the exhaust, or come into contact with anything that may slowly cut through them. Examining the wire harness would be similar to the previous procedure. To determine whether it has been harmed in any way, you would examine it closely. It’s important to pay attention to the location where it connects to the EVAP pressure sensor.
It’s possible that the carbon canister is faulty.
Bad EVAP Pressure Sensor
Now would be an excellent moment to verify the signal from the fuel pressure sensor. A decent scanner will be required. Before purchasing a new vehicle, you should test it to ensure that it meets all of the specifications set by Ford. Here’s a terrific video that shows you exactly how to do it:
Fuel Tank Pressure Relief Valve
Providing everything else appears to be in working order, I would consider doing a smoke test prior to examining the fuel tank pressure relief valve.
They are generally difficult to get to because of their location. If you don’t have access to a smoke machine, here’s a link to a fantastic video on how to trace down a leak.

P0451 is a difficulty code that might be difficult to figure out what it means. - DTC P0451: Canister pressure sensor voltage fluctuation or steady voltage is irregular or inconsistent. If the voltage output of the canister pressure sensor swings rapidly for more than 10 seconds, the ECM terminates the EVAP system monitor. The ECM interprets this as a fluctuation in the voltage of the canister pressure sensor, and the EVAP system monitor is turned off. The ECM then lights the MIL and stores the DTC in the memory of the computer. Alternatively, if the sensor voltage output does not change for more than 2 minutes, the ECM interprets this as a sensor that has been stuck and terminates the monitoring session. The ECM then lights the MIL and stores the DTC in the memory of the computer. 2 trip detection logic detects both faults (i.e., both defects are identified). The DTC P0452 indicates that the canister pressure sensor voltage is low. If the voltage output (pressure) of the canister pressure sensor is less than 0.45 V: 42.11 kPa(abs), the ECM interprets this as an open or short circuit in the canister pressure sensor or its circuit and terminates the EVAP system monitor. DTC P0453: Canister pressure sensor voltage high is then stored by the ECM, which flashes the MIL and records the DTC (1 trip detection logic). If the voltage output (pressure) of the canister pressure sensor is more than 4.9 V: 123.761 kPa(abs), the ECM interprets this as an open or short circuit in the canister pressure sensor or its circuit, and the EVAP system monitor is stopped until the problem is resolved. Afterwards, the ECM flashes the MIL and saves the DTC (one trip detection logic).

P0451 The vapor pressure sensor is monitored by the ECM in two different ways.
If the pressure signal varies more than seven times outside of the prescribed range, the ECM interprets this as a problem in the vapor pressure sensor.
During a 5-minute period during which the intake air quantity changes, the sensor’s output does not change, the ECM interprets this as a problem in the vapor pressure sensor.
P0452 and P0453 are two different types of P0452.
The MIL will be activated by the ECM, and a DTC will be set.
