For anyone who stumbles across this thread and is experiencing the same issue as I was, here are my two cents on what I tried and a couple of questions: As soon as the P3400 code appeared on my 2008 Ody, I took it to a parts store where they would retrieve the code for free, then went on Google and discovered the wonderful information above, as well as service bulletin 11-033, which I followed to its conclusion.
The oil level was a quart low, so a good lesson here is that if you have an Ody with VCM (EX-L or Touring, I believe) and the engine light comes on, check your oil level right away (5w20).
I finished it off by calling a couple Honda shops to see what they would charge for the software update (prices ranged from $70-$140), took the service bulletin and the above post with me, explained exactly what I wanted, and had the software update completed and out the door in under an hour for $70 dollars (I was pleased).
If you pay close attention to the update, you will notice a very minor detectable difference.
After about 1k miles, the code appeared again; I checked the oil and it was perfect this time; there had been no burning of a drop; I took it to the part store, where the code appeared again; I cleared the code (I guess they aren’t supposed to do that, so make a friend; my new friend’s name is Cole.
- If there was a genuine problem, the light would have come back on, wouldn’t it?
- When I consider what may have prompted it, I recall that the second time the code appeared, I saw it after being in a driving scenario where I would have had to slam on the brakes or step on the throttle.
- It got me wondering since the first time it turned on, I saw it while I was parking at work and remembered that there was a yellow light (or more accurately, a very dark orange light, not quite red light) on the way to work and that I had chosen the gas over the brakes on that journey.
