  • Because the power liftgate on some SUVs may suddenly collapse, General Motors is recalling 779,000 vehicles. A total of 56 injuries have been attributed to the condition. The recall affects the Chevrolet Traverse from 2009 to 2012, the Buick Enclave from 2008 to 2012, the GMC Acadia from 2007 to 2012, and the Saturn Outlook from 2007 to 2010. In a statement released Friday, General Motors warned the gas struts that support the liftgate may prematurely deteriorate. ‘These cars are equipped with a prop rod recovery mechanism, which is designed to return the liftgate to its closed position in a slow and controlled way if the liftgate’s gas struts are no longer capable of sustaining the weight of the liftgate,’ the carmaker says. However, the prop rod recovery system software in these cars may be unable to detect or prevent a liftgate with prematurely worn gas struts from dropping too rapidly when the liftgate is opened.’ The Detroit carmaker began and ended an inquiry into the matter in 2010 after concluding that there was no pattern. Following complaints of strut issues at Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated an investigation that included General Motors. An inquiry into two Speak Up For Safety instances involving power liftgates began in November 2014, and an official GM probe was launched on March 17 after a formal GM investigation was begun. GM dealers will reprogram the power liftgate actuator motor with a new software calibration after it has been reprogrammed. Power Liftgate Problems?

Information such as the module failing to identify that the car is in park can be shown by using commands such as ‘Last Open Fail Data.’ When a module in a separate section of the car, such as the gearbox, requires programming, problems like these might develop on a motorized liftgate.

3. Manually Open the Liftgate

Remove the seats from the vehicle and any items from the trunk to make room for the hatch to be opened. Remove the trim plug from the liftgate’s interior panel with a flat blade screwdriver by prying it out with your fingers.

It may be necessary to use a boroscope or a similar equipment to determine where the release is located. To open the liftgate, use the flat blade screwdriver to press the release button on the liftgate.

4. Check the Fuses

The fuse box is located behind the instrument panel on the passenger side of the vehicle. Look locate the 15 amp DSPLY fuse on the instrument panel by reading the key on the instrument panel. Fuse testing is done by connecting the test light to a ground near the fuse box and testing the fuse. To use the test light, place the probe on each side of the fuse and press it into the hole on each side. If the test light glows on both sides of the fuse, it indicates that the fuse is in excellent working order.

It is possible that the wire has been severed, and the fuse has blown.

Check for damaged wires on the fuse, which indicates that the fuse has blown.

5. Remove the Liftgate Panel

When removing the liftgate panel, the clips and any trim pieces that are attached to the liftgate panel with screws beneath are often removed, followed by pulling the liftgate panel away from the body of the vehicle with a trim tool.

  • A flat-blade screwdriver

  1. With a flat-bladed screwdriver, pry up the push clips on the liftgate latch. Remove the plastic liftgate handle from the liftgate. Using a plastic trim tool, pry the liftgate handle down and away from the gate. Remove the 7mm Screws from the Liftgate Handle and set them aside. Remove the 7mm bolts from the hatch handle and set them aside. Pull the lower panel down, disconnect the electrical connectors, and then remove the lower panel from the vehicle. The lower panel may be removed from its holding clips by simply pushing it down. Remove the panel by disconnecting the electrical connectors and removing it. Connect the electrical connectors and then install the lower panel to complete the installation. Connect the electrical connections to the liftgate panel using the provided connectors. While attaching the holding pins on the lower panel to the retaining clips on the liftgate beneath the window, force the lower panel into the liftgate and into the window frame. Tighten the 7mm Screws that attach the Liftgate Handle to the liftgate handle. Tighten the 7mm bolts that connect the liftgate handle to the frame. Attach the Liftgate Handle to the gate. Trim Liftgate handle trim should be pressed against the liftgate panel. Push-Clips should be reinstalled. Attach the push-clips to the lower panel with a nut and bolt.

6. Test the Electrical Connectors

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector that connects the liftgate latch’s power closing buttons. Using a test light, check for electrical current in the thicker wires that operate the liftgate actuator
  2. Otherwise, replace them. Connect the test light to the cable and push the lower or higher switch that is not working properly. The switch must be changed if it does not illuminate the test light when pressed.

Diagnostic Tip: If both of the switches fail, it is necessary to do further testing. It is necessary to replace the liftgate latch if both power and ground switches test positive for both power and ground.

How to Test the Liftgate Switch Power Buttons with a Multimeter

Reading from a multimeter for electrical resistance of one hundred percent Sometimes the switches become clogged with dirt and debris, and they cease to function. You may check the switch and the wires with an ohms-meter, which measures the resistance of the circuit.
