A rough idle is one symptom of a clogged fuel filter. Failing Electrical Components: A problem or failure in the ignition system or various electronic components can cause a rough idle. If this is the case, the problem will usually get worse as RPMs increase.
- There are quite a few reasons why your Mazda 3 could be idling rough. An internal combustion engine needs air, fuel, and spark in order to achieve ignition. When one or more of these variables is off it can lead to a rough idling condition.
Why does my Mazda 3 idle rough?
The most common reasons a Mazda 3 has rough idle are a vacuum leak, an issue with the spark plugs, or a problem with the ignition coil.
What causes rough idle at low rpm?
Causes of a rough idle. Many different problems could result in a rough idle for your car or truck, including: dirty fuel injectors, clogged air filters, bad spark plugs, and a variety of exhaust system issues.
What could cause an engine to run rough at idle?
A rough idling engine can be caused by spark plugs or spark plug wires. A plug that is damaged or installed incorrectly can result in fuel being burned at an inconsistent rate. If the damage is bad enough, you may also notice your engine running rough while driving.

How do you reset the throttle position sensor on a Mazda 3?
Reconnect the battery and turn the key on but do not start the engine. Immediately depress the throttle to the floor (wide open throttle) 3 times. This will set the TPS angle.
How do you fix a rough idle when AC is on?
After cleaning start the engine and let it idle for at least 20 minutes while the system learns it’s new throttle position. This vehicle should relearn on its own. It may need to be revved up and put in gear several times during the learing time.
Can a bad air filter cause rough idle?
Poor Engine Performance Engine misfires, rough idling and hard starts can all be traced to a clogged engine air filter. The dirty air filter restricts the air supply to the engine causing unburned fuel to form a soot residue that accumulates on the spark plug.
Will bad spark plugs cause rough idle?
Failing Spark Plugs – The spark plugs create the spark that ignites the fuel in the engine. Faulty spark plugs, therefore, struggle to ignite the fuel, causing rough idle and difficulty starting.
Will low oil cause rough idle?
Driving degrades engine oil causing it to lose its lubricating ability and to carbonizes under high temperatures. Driving your vehicle well past the regular oil interval date causes friction to increase. Your engine will perform poorly with a lack of power or a rough idle.
What are signs of a bad spark plug?

What is the average lifespan of a Mazda3?
According to Vehicle History, you can expect a Mazda3 to last upwards of 200,000 to 300,000 miles on average. In fact, there are even some Mazda3 owners with over 350,00 miles on the odometer and their cars are still going strong.
Are Mazda3’s reliable?
The Mazda 3 Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 9th out of 36 for compact cars. The average annual repair cost is $433 which means it has excellent ownership costs. The severity of repairs is low while frequency of those issues is average, so major issues are uncommon for the 3.
How long did your Mazda3 last?
Like most modern cars, the Mazda 3 should last you at least 150,000 – 200,000 miles if well maintained and regularly serviced. Most Americans drive an average of 13,500 miles per year. Based on this, your Mazda3 should last at least 10-15 years.
Rough idle, no lights or codes
You are not the only one who is dealing with this problem. Over the summer, I was supposed to have this rectified; but, I’ve been too busy to do so. This is what I did in my situation; – Convert all three mounts to ROCA style (didnt help, bit firmer than stock) -replace the solenoid valve for the purge (didnt fix, but increased my mpg) -maf has been cleared (didnt help) -the throttle body has been cleaned (didnt help) factory plugs that have never been used before (didnt fix) I am certain that it is not the gasoline pump.
A set of Mazda official service paperwork for the 2004-2005 Mazda 3 were made available to me, and they included an extensive list of items to test/check for rough idle/or if the car rattles when in drive.
I thought it was interesting.
Now that I think of it, I recall reading somewhere about another gentleman who removed the fuse responsible for the brake lights and horn in his 3 and the car now idles wonderfully smooth.
2005 Mazda 3 2.3L rough idle
In light of the fact that the codes were generated after the intake pipe was disconnected from the throttle body for the third time, I believe the most obvious first step is to investigate a vacuum issue. It is possible that there is some air sneaking in after the MAF, and that the engine is not putting out enough gas to compensate for the quantity of air it is receiving. This would explain the rough idle as well as the reason why the oxygen sensor is reading lean. When the intake pipe was moved for the (likely) first time in 13 years, it might have sustained more damage, exacerbating the situation even further.
Most of the time, o2 sensor codes are associated with other issues; but, there’s always the possibility that your o2 sensor has genuinely failed.
It is also possible that there is a problem with the gasoline or the spark.
I would anticipate at least one of them to be followed by further issues (sluggish acceleration, cylinder missfiring, problems beyond idle RPM, etc.) Is it possible that it is the PCV?
yea. It is frequently possible to clean it instead of purchasing a new one. However, I’d start by checking for a vacuum leak first. Generally speaking, liquid solutions are not solutions, however your mileage may vary in this regard.
Mazda 3 idling issues when the a/c is on
- Thank you for your time. I have a 2006 Mazda 3i, and over the past couple of months, the check engine light has been intermittently turning on and then going off. Then, after more than a month, it has finally remained on. The car also has a harsh idle, however this is only noticeable when the air conditioning is turned on. It has also come to a halt on a handful of occasions. The vehicle was taken to Autozone, where the technicians hooked it into a machine to examine the engine light code. P0506 was the number they gave me. Because my automobile does not have an IAC, I discovered that this is a ghost code after doing some investigation. It simply refers to a problem with the RPM. Some sources on the internet imply that my throttle body is unclean, which I believe to be true. The technician I took it to says I need to repair my throttle body and that it also has to be programmed, and he estimates that it will cost me $900 to do so. According to Mazda, a new throttle body does not even necessitate the installation of new software. I have the impression that I am being treated unfairly because I am a woman, and as a result, I do not trust these establishments. My check engine light turned off after approximately 30 minutes after I placed a gasoline injector cleaning additive into the gas tank. It remained off for over a week before turning back on. What are the chances that my throttle body is clogged is the cause of the troubles I am experiencing? I’ve put 100000 miles on my car and have never had it serviced for a throttle body cleaning. With all honesty, do you believe I could clean it myself

Mazda 3 Rough Idle → Causes & Diagnosis
The cause for your Mazda 3’s harsh idling might be due to a variety of factors. In order for an internal combustion engine to ignite, it requires three components: air, fuel, and a spark. This can result in a harsh idling situation when one or more of these factors are out of balance. The ignition system is almost often the source of the problem, but there are a variety of additional factors to consider. We’ll go over the most prevalent reasons for a bumpy idle in the section below.
Mazda 3 Rough Idle Causes
We can only hope that the check engine light is illuminated. It can provide you with a great deal of information on what is going on with your 3. You may either take your car to a nearby parts store and ask them to scan it for you, or you can scan it yourself at your convenience. The majority of them will do it as a favor (obviously they want to sell the parts). Code scanners, on the other hand, are quite inexpensive. Having one of your own may save you a great deal of time and effort. Once you’ve obtained the trouble codes, you may use that information to establish if the problem is caused by an O2 sensor, spark plugs, coil packs, or another component of the system.
Ignition System
Here are the primary components of the ignition system, as well as the factors that might lead them to cause your 3 to idle unevenly in the first place.
- It is possible that the spark plugs in your 3 are malfunctioning. This is one of the most prevalent causes (if not the most common) of misfiring. Despite the fact that most current automobiles employ iridium spark plugs, they still need to be replaced at the intervals advised by the manufacturer. This article has an excellent chart that allows you to compare the condition of your spark plugs to that of new plugs. Packs of Ignition Coils – Coil packs are used by nearly all model years and engines. Because the engine computer fires these packs at precisely the appropriate time, the engine’s ignition timing is as precise as it can be. If a coil pack fails, it will result in a misfire as well as a rough idle condition. The truth is that your 3 will run harsher at any RPM, but a misfire will be most noticeable at idle. Spark Plug Wires – While not every model and engine combination of automobiles today comes with spark plug wires (many are now coil on plug), if your vehicle does chance to have them, they might fail and create a rough idle when the vehicle is started. An excellent video on how to diagnose faulty plug wires with a multimeter can be found here.
Air Filter
If you have reason to believe that your 3’s air filter has not been replaced in a very long period, or if you have recently driven in challenging circumstances, it may be worthwhile to get it checked. Perhaps it has become so congested that there is not enough air passing through to maintain good idling conditions. In fact, if your check engine light isn’t on at all, inspecting the air filter would be a good place to begin your investigation. It’s easily accessible, frequently the source of the problem, and quite inexpensive and simple to repair.
Oxygen Sensors
The oxygen sensors that are installed in your Mazda 3 are in charge of monitoring the exhaust in order to assist the ECU in determining the proper air/fuel combination to be used. The O2 sensors in your car may be the most difficult to work with out of all the sensors in your vehicle. They have to cope with extremely hot exhaust that can coat them with deposits, rendering them inoperable and potentially dangerous. Over time, the heat from the exhaust can also cause the wire that connects to and from them to become brittle.
When an engine is running extremely lean, it will frequently idle rough.
Fuel Injectors
One of the functions of the fuel injection system is to atomize the gasoline into a thin mist. Depending on how well a fuel injector performs in this process, it will either allow too much or too little fuel to enter the combustion chamber in relation to the amount of air present.
There are a variety of reasons why a fuel injector may fail, as well as a variety of symptoms that vary depending on how the fuel injector failed. Mazda 3 faulty fuel injector symptoms.
Conclusion
There are a variety of reasons why your Mazda 3 could be idling poorly. We attempted to list the most often seen ones above. If you were fortunate enough to have them, try to base your decisions on the OBDII codes. Any more information that you would like to share is welcome; please leave a remark below. Wishing you the best of luck!
05 mazda 3 rough/low idle
Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015 at 1:42 PM The Junior Member is the thread starter. Date of joining: September 2015 Tucson, Arizona is the location. In this thread: 105 mazda 3 rough idle/low idle Hello, I am new to the forum as well as to performing minor repairs on my own vehicle. In my 2005 Mazda3, I have observed that it idles harshly while stopped at intersections and has stalled twice in the past several months. At the beginning of January, I had a check engine light come on, which indicated a probable vacuum leak or faulty sensor.
- Now I’m experiencing some rough idling, as well as a decrease in fuel efficiency, which is concerning.
- The Evap Solenoid was mentioned on a forum a short time ago, and the suggestion was made to use some form of cleanser on it.
- Would much appreciate it if someone could provide simple step-by-step directions on how to accomplish this as well as what cleaning solution to use, as well as any other recommendations on what could be causing the problem and how to repair it.

- Having the same problem, but just while I am filling up with gas.
- This occurs when the tank is 3/4 full or when the gas light is ready to run out.

Car shakes while idling – Page 2
The original post was made by mazda3girl Hey, I’m having the same problem as you. The car shakes and idles low, then leaps and lowers. Stalled while driving, so I tried running some premium gas and fuel injector cleaning, which made it run a bit better for a time, but then it started stalling all over again. Additionally, it has a difficult time starting after filling up with petrol. EGR valve was cleaned, and an Evap purge valve was installed. It does not appear to be stalling at this time; nevertheless, the shudder and floating RPMs are still there when the vehicle is not in gear or at idling.
Do you have any further thoughts?
heyyy, I was having the same problem.
You may test it by starting it and then removing the gas cap; if the engine begins lowering rpm and almost stalling, you’ve found the source of the problem.
That substance just dissolves all of the gunk. I followed the instructions to the letter and was able to resolve the issue, however my engine’s rpms remain between 500 and 700. I’m not concerned about it because lower idle rpm results in reduced gas use, which is good news.
Mazda MAZDA3 Questions – Rough Idle on Mazda 3 2006 Hatchback
Question: Is it the Passenger Motor Mount, the throttle, the EPASolvenoid, the Rear Motor Mount, or something else that is causing this issue? Last week, I went down a rocky slide on a gravel road, and the bottom of my car began to shake violently. Due to these circumstances, I experienced a “chainsaw” sound while pressing the gas pedal, giving the impression that I had a “turbo exhaust” when driving. Fast forward to three days later, when I fitted a K N Typhoon 69 Cold Air Intake, and here we are today!
- Another succinct summary of the problem is as follows: The steering wheel, seats, and the area surrounding the passenger seat/glove compartment are all subjected to quite forceful vibrations in the cabin at times.
- Despite the fact that I have not yet examined the RMM, when the car began shaking last week, I instantly rushed to check the underside of the centre of the vehicle.
- I acquired her for 133,000 dollars.

Why Is My Engine Idling Rough?
Service FAQs (updated on October 23rd, 2018) Something to remember is that rough idling is not the problem; rather, it is a sign of an engine problem that has not yet been identified. The fact that your engine is idling rough might be attributable to a variety of different factors. One possible cause of a rough idle is that the fuel injectors need to be cleaned, or that the spark plugs need to be changed, which both require attention. Other factors contributing to the harsh idling include:
- Problems with the exhaust system
- Air intake valves with holes in them
- A broad loss of power throughout the vehicle
- When the weather becomes colder, it’s possible that automobiles may have a more difficult time starting and could tremble when the engine is switched on.
You should plan tune-ups for your car on a frequent basis in order to avoid this problem from occurring. During a tune-up, the technician checks a number of different sections of the engine to ensure that everything is in perfect operating order before proceeding. If you have already noticed that your vehicle is experiencing this problem, it is advised that you conduct a diagnostic check to determine the specific source of the rough idle problem. It is advised that you take your vehicle to a reputable technician for an inspection and diagnosis of the problem.
A rough idle should be handled as soon as possible since the longer this problem persists, the more damage to your car may be done, which may eventually result in a more expensive repair bill in the future.
