Ford F150 F250 Replace Oxygen Sensor How to
Replacement of the oxygen sensor on your Ford F-150 or Super Duty is explained in detail in this article. Cynthia Griffith contributed to this article on November 20, 2014. Car and Driver magazine, Dan Ferrell, and others contributed to this article. This article pertains to the Ford F-150 (2004-2014), as well as the Ford F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks (2005-2014). Even if you don’t notice any symptoms when your check engine light comes on, you’ll need to utilize a code reader to figure out where the problem is coming from.
If you have any of these codes, you should consult a mechanic immediately.
As a result, poor gas mileage may be both a sign of and a potentially serious consequence of a defective oxygen sensor.
Materials Needed
- Two jack stands, a floor jack, and an oxygen sensor
- Penetrating oil
- An oxygen sensor socket
- Thread chaser
Step 1 – Apply penetrating oil to the O2 sensor and let it soak
Pneumatic jack; two jack stands; penetrating oil; O2 sensor socket; thread chaser; O2 sensor.
Step 2 – Park and raise your vehicle
Make assured that your car is parked on level ground and that it is in neutral before beginning to elevate your truck with the use of a floor jack and jack stands for additional support. While you elevate the front of the vehicle, make sure to have the parking brake engaged and the back wheels locked for safety. Figure 2: Jack stands are used to secure the truck.
Step 3 – Thread the O2 socket onto the O2 sensor
Using the socket and thread chaser, remove the malfunctioning oxygen sensor from the vehicle. Figure 3 shows an oxygen sensor.
Step 4 – Disconnect the connectors on top of the transmission
The connections are blue and have the same appearance as those shown in Figure 4. Simply squeeze the connections on either side of the connectors and pull them away from each other. Figure 4: Disconnect the oxygen sensor from the rest of the system.
Step 5 – Remove the protective cap from the new sensor
The protective cap that comes with the new sensor should be removed. Figure 5: Remove the protective cover from the device.
Step 6 – Thread the new sensor into the old sensor’s place
Step 3 should be repeated using a socket and a thread chaser to thread the new sensor into the same location as the old sensor. Figure 6: Insert the replacement sensor via the threaded hole.
Step 7 – Connect the new connector just above the transmission
The new connector should simply snap into place where the old connector had previously been located. The process of replacing the sensor is straightforward once the sensor has been removed and fresh equipment installed in its place, where the malfunctioning equipment was previously located. Figure 7 shows how to connect the oxygen sensor.
Pro Tip
If you have an oxygen sensor that is not working properly, you might fail state emissions.
You should replace this component if it continues to fail, since this may indicate the presence of a more significant problem with your exhaust system.
