Battery Light On – Windstar? (Perfect answer)

  • If your Ford Windstar’s battery light is on, it means a few things. It is trying to warn you that there is an issue with the charging system. The charging system itself is relatively simple. It’s almost always going to be caused by a bad battery or alternator. The battery light comes on when it detects that the voltage in the battery is too low.

What causes the battery warning light to come on?

An illuminated battery light could be due to a number of issues, including: A loose or corroded battery cable. A problem with the alternator or voltage regulator. Damaged cells or plates inside the battery.

Is it safe to drive my car with the battery light on?

While it is relatively safe for you, physically, to drive your car with the light on, it’s not safe for ensuring that you get to your destination without a breakdown; nor is it safe for the other components that may be affected by a weak battery, such as the alternator or computerized accessories.

Can a blown fuse cause the battery light to come on?

The fuses might not cause any direct issues with your vehicle’s battery charging operation. However, there could be a blown fuse somewhere linking the battery and the alternator. This problem can turn on the battery light in the car.

How do you know if its the alternator or battery?

If your engine won’t turn over or takes far longer than usual, it’s time to grab the jumper cables and attempt a jump-start. If your engine starts and stays running but won’t start again later, it’s likely a battery problem. If your vehicle immediately stalls, it’s probably a bad alternator.

How long can I go with my battery light on?

How long can I drive my car with the battery light on? If your battery light stays on while you drive, you’ll have roughly 30-60 minutes to drive with your battery lights on before your car may start stalling.

Ford Windstar: Battery Light On – Diagnosis

If the battery indicator on your Ford Windstar is illuminated, it might signal a number of things. It is attempting to alert you to the fact that there is a problem with the charging system. The charging system itself is a straightforward concept. Most of the time, a defective battery or alternator will be the source of the problem. When the battery voltage is too low, the battery light illuminates, indicating that the battery is low on charge. When the car is first started, most battery lights will illuminate if the computer determines that the voltage was too low for a satisfactory starting experience.

You may have observed that your Windstar is difficult to start, and that the battery light remains on after the engine has started.

Ford Windstar Battery Light Causes

In the previous 50 years, there hasn’t been much advancement in the charging system of automobiles. The engine rotates the alternator, which charges the battery as a result of the rotation. Due to the fact that it is a straightforward condition, diagnosing it is straightforward.

1. Battery

The battery’s primary function is to provide power to your Windstar. Once it’s started, it’ll be able to run quite fine on the alternator. This is a very crucial fact to understand. When you are attempting to start your car, a defective battery will typically make itself known to you.

2. Alternator

An example of a typical alternator When the engine is already going, a faulty alternator will generally make itself known to the driver. It is a clear indicator that the alternator is no longer supplying enough watts to power the different electrical systems while also charging the battery in your Windstar if the battery light illuminates when the engine is already running and the engine is already running. The problem will be resolved by installing a new alternator. Also see: Ford Windstar Bad Alternator Diagnosis and Repair

3. Alternator Belt

Modern automobiles employ a serpentine belt to turn the alternator, which is almost universal. The serpentine belt drives more than one engine accessory (such as the air conditioning compressor, power steering, and so on). It is possible that the serpentine belt on your Windstar may become damaged and will no longer be able to crank the alternator enough to provide a suitable charge.

4. Battery Post Corrosion

A serpentine belt is used to turn the alternator in nearly all contemporary cars. This belt drives more than one engine accessory (such as the air conditioning compressor, power steering, and other similar devices). It will no longer be able to turn your Windstar’s alternator enough to provide a suitable charge if the serpentine belt becomes damaged.

Battery Light Diagnosis:Ford Windstar

You can quickly determine whether or not your Windstar’s alternator is in terrible condition at home. If you have access to a voltage meter, this is an excellent place to begin.

Voltage Test

The first thing you’ll want to do is invest in a high-quality multimeter.

With a multimeter, you can quickly check to discover if the alternator on your Windstar is operational or inoperative. The following is an excerpt from the page on our site dedicated to poor alternator diagnosis:

  1. Set the voltage reading on the multimeter. The voltage must be adjusted to 20V DC, and the negative side of the meter must be connected to the negative battery post or wire when your Windstar is switched off. The positive side of the voltmeter should be connected to the positive battery wire. It’s best to acquire a reading between 12.0 and 12.6 volts while the engine is turned off
  2. Now that you have a baseline, you may proceed to turning the engine on. You should not use the air conditioner or turn on the headlights or any other equipment until after you have started the engine. You should obtain more than 14.2 volts after starting the engine. If you obtained 14.2 volts or greater, that means your alternator is charging properly. In this case, the alternator should be replaced if the voltage reading is still in the 12s. You should definitely take it to a parts store and get it tested if it is producing voltage levels in the 13’s. The alternator is most likely faulty
  3. Now, presuming that the alternator was producing more than 14 volts, proceed to switch on the headlights, air conditioner, radio, and any other accessory you can think of, and repeat the test. The fact that the voltage dipped back into the 12’s is a very strong sign that your Windstar’s alternator is malfunctioning. It is still worthwhile to get it tested, but be prepared to replace it if necessary.

Battery Test

If the alternator appears to be properly charging the battery, it is time to investigate the battery itself. It is recommended that you take it to a local parts store. Almost all of them are willing to give it a try for free. The new one will even be installed if the old one is defective.

Conclusion:Ford Windstar Battery Light

A short length of time is sufficient for your Windstar to run only on its battery power. However, if the alternator has failed, you would be trapped for an extended period of time. If your battery light turns on while you’re driving, head to a shop as soon as you can to get it checked out. If you have anything to add, please leave a remark in the section below. Thank you. Wishing you the best of luck!

Ford Windstar Alternator and Battery Problems

I have a 2001 Windstar SE with around 120,000 miles on the odometer at the moment. I purchased it last year after it had essentially sat (with just one or two trips per week) for around three or four years. The car ran well for the first three or four months, with the exception of a difficult idle when the weather became cold (bouncing tach), which faded once I was able to get it moving again. A few months after I purchased it, the alternator and battery failed, but everything was working OK until about March of this year, when it died.

  • Some of the time, it would come on shortly after I started the van, then go away as the vehicle reached a reasonable speed.
  • When I was driving it a couple of weeks ago, it began attempting to stall out whenever I came to a complete stop, causing the dash and headlights to darken as the tachometer bounced.
  • Oddly enough, it began right up again as soon as I pulled over to the side of the road and parked it.
  • He also tested a few other items and said my alternator (1 year old), battery (2 weeks old), and anything else he could think of were all OK.
  • Earlier today, when I was driving home from work and stuck in traffic, the battery light momentarily illuminated once more.
  • Once I got it up to speed, it was fine, and I pulled over somewhere and it started right up again without any problems.

Also, the passenger-side windows haven’t functioned in a few years, so I’m looking forward to seeing if there’s anything I can fix in those door wire bundles. Thank you for the information.

Ford Windstar Questions – Battery does not charge

GuruD3P6G posed the question. about the 2003 Ford Windstar LX posted on September 30, 2017 at 10:51 a.m. Type of question: MaintenanceRepair The battery light came on, and the battery continued going dead, so I got a new battery, and now the batterylight is on, and the battery would not charge.

1 Answer

Whether you are able to start the vehicle, connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals and check to see if you are receiving 13.5-14.8 volts. If this is the case, your alternator is faulty. In the meanwhile, put the new battery on a trickle charge to get it started. I also received the distinct impression from your description that you could be suffering from a parasitic drain. Check the alternator first, and if it is in excellent working order, go on to the parasitic drain. This was beneficial to 1 person.

Ford Windstar Battery Light and Alternator

When I was driving back from an auction in Arthur, Illinois, I noticed that my Ford Windstar van was losing power. I called Ford and they said they would send someone out to check it out. I’D JUST GETTED ONTO THE INTERSTATE WHEN ALL OF MY DASH LIGHTS BEGAN TO TURN ON AT THE SAME TIME. It took me until the southern edge of Mattoon, Illinois, before I could find a safe place to get off the road and nurse my van back to health. WHEN I COULDN’T CONNECT WITH THE TOWING COMPANY FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF TRYS, I GAVE UP AND CALLED MY LITTLE SISTER.

  • Following my return home and some contemplation, I decided that we should attempt to recover my van.
  • THE BATTERY CHARGER AND A LONG EXTENSION CORD WERE WITH US, AND WE WERE ABLE TO GET THE VAN TO START UP AFTER FINDING A PLUG AND CHARGING FOR A WHILE, BUT WE ONLY MADE IT a few miles down the road before the van began to lose power, once more.
  • I surmised that my alternator was failing based on the constant jumping, which confirmed my suspicion.
  • It took me 3 or 4 hours to put it together myself, but after much trial and error, I was finally able to pry it into place and screw the last bolt back in.

The time now is 09:32 p.m. on November 7, 2008. I’ve been experiencing difficulties for quite some time. My check engine light has been illuminated for several months. I had the codes analyzed, and the readings were 171 and 174. I had the o2 sensors replaced, which resolved the issue I was having with the unit shutting off but the light being on while driving. My oil was changed about a month ago and there was a lot of brown sludge in it, Meineke even showed me little metal shavings in it, today I checked the oil by taking off the cap and it had light brown sludge around it, I pulled out the stick and the oil from it looked about normal to me, the only problem is that my coolant will not stay at the minimum level so I constantly fill it with water because they scared me with the idea that if the coolant leaked into the On my way home from work this morning, I put on the defrost and noticed that something was burning under the hood.

I opened the hood and saw that smoke was pouring from what I think to be the back of my engine.

The wife drove it to work for 10 minutes and then back home for 10 minutes, during which time she observed that it seemed like it was about to shut off if she sat at a stoplight for an extended period of time.

The car remained outside for approximately 20 minutes before I was able to go.

I pulled into the Meineke parking lot 2 minutes before they closed and the car cut off, refusing to start.

After approximately 20 minutes, it began to rain, and I was able to make it back home.

I have around 120k miles on my vehicle.

Here’s what I did to make it better: I’ve been experiencing difficulties for quite some time.

P0171 and P0174 were the codes that were read to me.

I had my oil changed about a month ago, and there was a significant amount of brown muck in the oil.

I checked the oil today by removing the cover, and it had a light brown muck on the outside of the container.

My coolant will not maintain its minimum level, thus I must continually top it off with water since I do not have the funds to purchase additional coolant.

When I woke up this morning, I had to take a short 5 minute bike to work.

My engine was emitting smoke when I opened the hood when I arrived home, and I assume it was coming from the back of the engine.

While sitting at the light for an extended period of time, she observed that the car seemed as if it was about to stall.

Before I departed, the automobile sat outside for perhaps 20 minutes.

It stopped and wouldn’t start as I got into the Meineke parking lot two minutes before they closed for the day.

I had to wait about 20 minutes before it started, but I was able to make it home.

I’ve put around 120k miles on the vehicle.

My wife is driving it right now, and she reports that it is operating normally.

It should not be running if the head gasket is blown.

P0171 and P0174 were the codes that were read to me.

Have you got the codes scanned and decoded?

When you’ve finished reading them, make a note of the page number and publish it here.

Meineke even showed me a few little metal shavings that were in it.

Coolant in the oil has the potential to damage the bearings.

When I took the stick out of the bag, the oil appeared to be normal to me.

I was also concerned about the possibility that coolant may seep into the engine and cause it to lock up.

My 98 had a bad one, and I recently changed it.

A word of caution when it comes to just flowing water: Plain water boils at a lower temperature and does not provide any protection to the metal in the refrigeration system.

When I woke up this morning, I had to take a short 5 minute bike to work.

My engine was emitting smoke when I opened the hood when I arrived home, and I assume it was coming from the back of the engine.

If the liquid was white, it was most likely coolant seeping onto the exhaust manifold from the radiator.

While sitting at the light for an extended period of time, she observed that the car seemed as if it was about to stall.

I needed to get to work as soon as she came home.

I had driven a little more than a mile down the road when I saw the battery indicator blinking while stopped at a traffic signal.

There might be a variety of reasons for this.

According to the person who worked there, it may be the head gasket.

In later Windstars, the lower intake manifold gaskets are a source of frustration.

It got going and was able to make it back to the house.

I was really pleased with their service.

I recently began to experience jerking when driving, but assumed it was due to the gas I was using since after filling up at exxon, the jerking was gone, albeit a bit when the tank was around a fourth of the way full.

When I come to a complete stop, my oil light illuminates, but it turns off when I begin to roll.

By the time the tow truck arrived, the car had started normally, but I wanted to make sure it was hauled in case it happened again.

My buddy said it reminded her of when one of the hoses was knocked off while I was having the spark plugs replaced; he didn’t notice he had knocked it off until the next day, and the car would shut off in the same manner as it does now; she thought it could be related to that experience.

It’s possible that the problem is with the gas pump or a faulty hose. I realize I have a slew of other issues, but I don’t believe it is the head gasket, or at least I hope it isn’t. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright Until 2022 –
