- When a Toyota Camry won’t shift out of park, the most likely problem is a bad shift lock control switch. The shift lock control switch is located in the center console towards the rear of the shifter lever. It’s controlled by the shift lock control unit and energizes the shift lock solenoid so it releases and allows the user to shift out of park.
Why can’t I get my shifter out of park?
What could be the cause? The main components that control the locking and unlocking of the shifter are the vehicle ignition switch, the brake light/stoplight switch, and the shift interlock solenoid. When one of these components fails, you may not be able to move the shifter out of Park.
How do you release a stuck shift lock release?
How to Release a STUCK Shift Lock Release
- Engage the emergency brake / parking brake.
- Find the shift lock override slot.
- Insert a key, nail file, or screwdriver into the slot.
- Press the brake pedal while you are pressing down on the override,
- Shift gears as you normally would.
Why is it hard to shift from park to drive?
The weight of the vehicle rolling onto the parking pawl makes it harder to shift out of Park. To avoid this, engage the parking brake when on an incline before shifting into Park or releasing the brake pedal. That way the parking brake, not the transmission pawl, bears the load and will allow you to shift freely.
Why is my shifter locked?
Either the brake light fuse is blown or the brake light switch is faulty. These are the most common reasons for a shifter being stuck in Park. A faulty brake light switch does not send this signal.
Can you tow a car stuck in park?
Can you tow a car in park? The short answer is yes, but towing a car in park can potentially cause damage if certain precautions are not taken beforehand. An automatic car in park can have the mechanical lock of the transmission broken if towed with wheels on the street.
What causes a car not to shift into gear?
The first culprit to suspect when your vehicle refuses to go into gear is low transmission fluid. Perhaps your fluid is leaking or low, and that may cause your car problems having a smooth gear transmission. You should be looking out for the level, smell and color of the fluid. If little, try adding some liquid.
What are the signs that your transmission is going out?
What Are the Transmission Failure Symptoms?
- Refusal to Switch Gears. If your vehicle refuses or struggles to change gears, you are more than likely facing a problem with your transmission system.
- Burning Smell.
- Noises When in Neutral.
- Slipping Gears.
- Dragging Clutch.
- Leaking Fluid.
- Check Engine Light.
- Grinding or Shaking.
What are the signs of low transmission fluid?
Signs of Low Transmission Fluid
- Noises. If your transmission is working properly, you shouldn’t hear any noise while you’re driving as it should transition smoothly.
- Burning Smell. Any foul smell coming from your car should direct you to your nearest service center.
- Transmission Leaks.
- Slipping Gears.
Camry won’t shift out of park
When a Toyota Camry won’t shift out of park , the most likely cause is a faulty shift lock control switch, which is found in the transmission. Within the center console, to the back of the shifter lever, is a switch that allows you to disable the shift lock feature. It is controlled by the shift lock control unit, which energizes the shift lock solenoid, allowing the user to shift out of park when the shift lock control unit is engaged. The power for the shift interlock computer is supplied by the cigarradio fuse, which is connected to the blue/red wire.
Another power source comes from the brake light switch, which is connected to the green/white wire.
If you are able to obtain power, proceed to testing the shift lock control switch.
P1 (green/red), P (green), and P2 (green/white) are the three numbers.
You should maintain a sense of continuity.

Toyota Camry Stuck in Park: Diagnosis
Nothing is more frustrating than being stranded in a car that has been locked in park. The engine is operating perfectly, but the transmission is refusing to budge. If you want to get your Toyota Camry rolling right away, you may try a number of different things. These include inspecting the parking brake to determine if it has become stuck, locating the shift lock solenoid override (if applicable), and inspecting the shift linkage. Let’s get this party started. Things that are simple and quick to fix will be the first items on our list (allowing you to get moving again).
Toyota Camry Stuck in Park Causes
If the gear shift cannot be moved into any other position, is it physically impossible to do so? A number of factors might be at play in creating the issue, as follows.
Parking Brake Stuck
Is your Toyota Camry parked on a slope? This means that gravity’s pull might be causing your transmission to exert pressure on the parking lock, which could cause your car to stall out. If this is what occurred to your Camry, the good news is that it is a rather simple problem to remedy. When driving up a slope without using a parking brake, this is a common occurrence. The same may happen to any car, regardless of its age or usage. Getting it unstuck might be simple, but it can also be dangerous due to the fact that you will need to rock the car.
Simply stomp your feet and move your weight about.
What you’ll have to do is accomplish it safely, like follows:
- Start the car’s engine
- Rock the vehicle while removing your foot from the brake. When you’ve started to rock toward the slope, apply the brakes to slow yourself down. You want to be able to ‘catch’ it with the brakes at the appropriate moment and place. This will relieve some of the strain on the parking lock. Light pressure should be applied to the shifter. Breaking the shift connection is something you don’t want to happen.
Hopefully, that was successful. To relieve some of the strain on the parking mechanism in the transmission, turn the engine off. It is not intended to function as a brake. The reason for this is that parking brakes are no longer referred to as emergency brakes. So, if you do decide to rock it, make sure to grab your Camry as it rolls behind you. Pushing the brakes and attempting to pull it out of park when it’s going to lurch forward once more Isn’t it simple?
Shift Lock Solenoid Failure
When you shift out of park without your foot on the brake, the shift lock solenoid is the device that prevents you from doing so. The good news is that the majority of shift locks are equipped with an override button. You’ll need to look for it for your specific model year of Camry, which can be found here (if applicable). Most of the time, finding it is straightforward. Take a look at your gearshift.
There will be a little plastic cover, which you may remove in order to disable the shifter lock solenoid. Getting back on the road in a timely manner and maybe saving you from being stranded is possible. Here’s a video that will teach you how to locate them on the majority of autos.
Bad Shift Linkage
The shift linkage on your Toyota Camry will typically give a lifetime of dependable service in most circumstances. However, they have the potential to become bad. If you are confident that the gear shifter is not stuck in park (as described above), then it is probable that the shift linkage is faulty. The bend may have been caused by something else, or it may be beginning to come free. The geometry will be off if it has come loose, and your Camry may become stuck in park as a result of the problem.
Conclusion:Camry Stuck in Park
If your Toyota Camry is stuck in park, there aren’t many problems that might cause it to become unresponsive. Wishing you the best of luck as you work through the diagnosis. If you have anything to contribute, please feel free to do so in the comments section below this post.
Shift Solenoid Location and Replacement?: Hi I Was Wondering if .
I was unable to locate any technical service bulletins or recalls for the item in our database, but a Google search appears to show that this is a very regular problem. Solenoids are electrical components, and their life expectancy is not predetermined in any way. It’s anyone’s guess how long they’ll be around. Because electrical components are inherently unpredictable, there is no definitive solution for you to provide. What I can tell you is that these solenoids, which are built up of coil windings, fail over time as a result of the heat generated by the trans fluids and the electrical currents that are used to energize them during operation.
Because the battery is located above the connections, when the contacts degrade due to the presence of water and, in certain situations, battery electrolytes, the computer will notice a fault because the battery is above the connectors.
I hope this has provided an answer to your query.
2018 Toyota Camry Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?
The Toyota Camry is one of the most popular mid-size cars of all time, and it continues to be so. It shares the same reputation as other Toyota cars for unwavering dependability. However, the completely revamped 2018 model has certain design problems that are very ‘un-Toyota-like.’ According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the engine, gearbox / powertrain, and vehicle speed control are among the most dangerous components of a car. Problems with the Engine
Toyota has issued a recall for 1,700 Camry models from the 2018 model year owing to pistons that were excessively big. Pistons are at the heart of every engine’s performance. As the crankshaft revolves, the pistons in the cylinders move up and down, causing the engine to rev. As they descend, they draw air into the engine, which increases its performance. As they go higher, they cause compression to occur. Both of these events are required in order to achieve combustion, which is a succession of tiny explosions that generates power and propels the vehicle forward.
Consequently, the piston may make contact with the wall, resulting in substantial engine damage and final seizure of the vehicle.
While driving, cars equipped with the 2.5L four-cylinder engine have been seen to seize up and cease to operate completely.
Toyota has stepped up to the plate and will replace the engines in the affected models at no cost to the customer.

Problems with the Jerky Transmission / Powertrain
The Direct Shift-8AT automatic transmission, which was introduced for the 2018 Toyota Camry, is a brand-new, eight-speed transmission. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website has a long list of complaints regarding the unit’s performance. One owner from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, wrote in to say, ‘The vehicle is experiencing gearbox problems.’ There are instances when the car appears to be unable to decide which gear to select or when to engage it, resulting in a brief period of dead acceleration for a second or two.
This has been a problem since the automobile was originally purchased in November of last year.’ The issue has been brought to the attention of the media.
After that, there’s the transmission, which requires an exorcist.’ In the following paragraphs, the author describes his experience: ‘In D, the car appears to upshift to fourth by 20 mph, and each attempt to accelerate is met with a yawn and several downshifts.
When in S mode, the transmission retains gears for a somewhat longer period of time and operates more like a regular transmission, although it appears to stop upshifting at 4th gear until the driver utilizes the shift paddles (a truly ludicrous accessory on this car) to select the top gear before shifting again.
In the article (TSBT-SB-0330-17), it is said that there is an issue with the primary computer of the vehicle, the powertrain control module (PCM). Dealers have been urged to reprogram the PCM in order to resolve the issue.
Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2018 Toyota Camry Transmission Problems and Acceleration Hesitation
I purchased a 2018 Toyota Camry LE. When merging into the highway, the problem is abrupt changes from the transmission, as well as the inability to accelerate from a slow down in some cases. This may be a significant danger since the vehicle does not move when the gas pedal is depressed; but, after a few seconds, it kicks in and accelerates quite quickly, and you have no way of knowing how fast it will go. Additionally, the gearbox is extremely jerky in city traffic. When you apply the brakes, the vehicle does not go forward, and when you apply the accelerator, the vehicle accelerates too quickly, causing you to collide with the vehicle in front of you.
- Downshifting issues have been reported with the 2018 Toyota Camry’s 8-speed automatic gearbox.
- The automobile looked to be stuck in neutral or between gears after completing a turn and reapplying the gas foot to the floor.
- When I was driving, I was almost hit from behind by another vehicle if the other driver hadn’t detected something was wrong and swerved to avoid hitting my car on one occasion.
- It jerks like it can’t find which gear to go into the car is really bad and I can’t seem to get any help from Toyota they told me to keep driving and that the car might need to get used to my driving style.
- They instructed me to operate the vehicle in manual mode.
Problems with the Vehicle Speed Control
The majority of the complaints listed under ‘vehicle speed control’ on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website are identical to those mentioned under the ‘transmission/powertrain’ category. The truth is that they’re merely more examples of the Camry’s widespread gearbox trouble. Presumably, messages wind up in this catch-all ‘vehicle speed’ category when the motorist is unsure of the exact nature of the problem with their automobile. They just know that it does not accelerate as quickly as it should.
When starting from a stop, or when driving and attempting to accelerate, it takes the car more than five seconds to recognize that you are pressing the gas pedal all the way.
‘It does nothing but rev a lot.’ The new Direct Shift-8AT transmission from Toyota is intended to be both economical and responsive. Unfortunately, computer controls that are not functioning properly prohibit the transmission from attaining its maximum potential.
Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2018 Toyota Camry Speed Control Problems
When the automobile is traveling at a low speed of roughly 20 miles per hour and the engine is running at 2000RPM, the gearbox is wired to try to locate a certain gear, causing the car’s speed to increase and drop, causing the car to jolt back and forth. Another issue is that when you are attempting to catch up with cars traveling at a slower pace on the highway and you push the gas pedal, the car behaves as if it is pondering about life philosophy as the rpm approach 4000 and the car suddenly accelerates.
- When changing lanes, overtaking another car, or joining a motorway, it takes much too long to get moving again.
- One month ago, I purchased the automobile.
- My automobile is in poor condition, and I’m afraid to drive.
- I came close to being rear-ended a couple of occasions.

It’s a very nice automobile. The hotel is dependable and has a nice room. The safety features are first-rate. For comfort, I prefer cloth seats; nevertheless, this vehicle has leather seats, which are not my first choice for comfort!
The heated seats are a nice trade-off; I really enjoy having that option and use it practically every day in the winter. Instead of hot air blowing on me, I like it. After three years and 42,000 miles, there have been no serious difficulties. View the entire review

The 8 speed transmission is the worst I’ve driven
The date is November 8, 2020. Sc12583 writes in from Houston, Texas. Who is the owner of this vehicle? Currently, I am driving a 2018 Toyota Camry SE with an 8-speed gearbox. I made the jump from a Honda Accord to this and now I’m kicking myself. From a completely stopped position, you must gently press the gas pedal. Giving it too much gas causes it to crank its engine but not to go forward. What motivated Toyota to develop an eight-speed transmission? I’ve never had that problem with a Honda—the Honda had energy and went off when you pushed the accelerator.

Exactly what type of car is the Toyota Camry in 2022? What does it have in common with? The Toyota Camry, like Kleenex or Coca-Cola, has become a household name at this point. But forget about the drab Camry sedans of the past. Even in hybrid form, the current model is fashionable and entertaining. A Camry is available for nearly every want or need, as well—at least for those who are willing to seek beyond SUVs. Compare it against vehicles such as the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord, and Mazda 6.
- Is the Toyota Camry a decent automobile for the year 2022?
- Thanks to its overall competence and, dare we say, its personality, the new Camry receives a TCC rating of 7.2 out of 10.
- For this mid-size vehicle with five seats, a few changes to the color scheme herald the year 2022.
- All of the Camry models have cluttered style that borders on the excessive, however the black roof on the TRD is whimsical in ways that we don’t often associate with a Camry vehicle.
- Their powertrains produce enough power, but they also produce astonishingly good fuel efficiency.
- The base engine is a 203-horsepower inline-4 that is adequate for most purposes, while the V-6 provides 310 horsepower.
- Every model has a generous amount of interior space, attractive looks, and a large infotainment screen that is burdened with mediocre technology.
- The Camry is practically faultless in terms of safety, receiving excellent ratings from independent testing and featuring outstanding standard technology that helps prevent or lessen collisions.
- When it comes to the Camry, the starting price is roughly $26,000, but we would budget around $30,000 for a well-equipped hybrid model if we were spending your money, of course.
- Most models come equipped with a 9.0-inch touchscreen that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2022 Toyota Camry is far from a dullard in the looks department.
Is the Toyota Camry a good-looking vehicle in 2022? However, while the Camry isn’t exactly brimming with refinement, its design is both attractive and intriguing. We give it a seven-out-of-ten rating. A few exterior improvements made last year will keep the property looking new until 2022. The Camry features a large snout and a small trunk, which give it rear-drive proportions that are more in line with European luxury vehicles than they are with American ones. The detailing, on the other hand, is everything from subtle, with harsh lines and wrinkles visible everywhere.
The inside has a similar richness to the outside, with large panels trimmed in either wood-like or metal-like trim to complement the exterior.
The majority of smartphones have a 9.0-inch touchscreen. Higher trim levels have access to a wider range of interior colors, including a bold red accent color. The next section has further information.
The 2022 Toyota Camry prioritizes comfort, but it can thrill in the right configurations.
Base Camrys aren’t very exciting, despite the fact that their 203-hp engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that performs admirably and earns it a credit for its excellent ride comfort. Is the Toyota Camry a four-wheel-drive vehicle? In select trim levels, all-wheel drive is available as an option with the basic engine; otherwise, front-wheel drive is the standard configuration. What is the top speed of the Toyota Camry? One of the most entertaining vehicles on the road is a Camry with the optional 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which offers silky smooth power complimented by a wonderful muffled growl.
- The Camry Hybrid, with its electric motor and battery, provides 208 horsepower, which is more than enough for our needs.
- The story of three Camrys is a narrative of ride and handling.
- Lower ride heights and stronger suspensions are available on the SE and XSE trim levels, though they aren’t particularly punitive in their handling.
- It’s sporty without being overdone, except in terms of appearances, of course.
The 2022 Toyota Camry is a comfy road-trip machine.
Despite having seats for five people, the 2022 Toyota Camry boasts a big cabin with an innovative design, yet it is not without flaws on the inside. Our rating is 7 out of 10, with points above average for front-seat legroom and a reasonable-sized trunk that accommodates 15.1 cubic feet of belongings in either the hybrid or gas versions. The Camry is around 192 inches in length overall, which makes it a completely typical mid-size car by mid-size sedan standards. Front-seat riders enjoy comfortable seats that may be upholstered in fabric or leather and that can be heated and cooled for an additional fee if desired.
The inside materials are excellent, but they aren’t going to compete with Lexus’s offerings.

Pick the Toyota Camry Hybrid for spectacular fuel economy.
Is the Toyota Camry a fuel-efficient vehicle? The Toyota Camry is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road today. For the mainstream 4-cylinder, we give the lineup a 6 out of 10 on our scale. If you choose with a hybrid, that figure will rise, whereas the V-6 will be somewhat higher. The base 4-cylinder vehicles are rated at 28 mpg in the city, 39 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg on the highway combined. The XLE and XSE models feature larger wheels and extra equipment, which makes them a little heavier and reduces their combined fuel economy to 27/38/31 mpg.

Finally, the V-6 vehicles get 26 mpg combined, or 25 mpg combined if you choose the TRD version of the vehicle.
