I have a 1999 Ford F-150 4.2 that I recently put the front cover on and installed the cam synchro but it was throwing the p1309 code. I figured I must have screwed something up so I took it to the mechanic and had them re-do it but now it’s throwing a slew of misfire codes including p0300, 0302,0303,0304, and 0306 but no longer the 1309 code. It runs but stalls.

My 1999 Ford F150 4.2 recently had the front cover installed as well as the cam synchro, but it was throwing the p1309 code, which I assumed was due to a faulty installation. I took it to a mechanic and had them reinstall it, but now it’s throwing a flurry of misfire codes, including p0300, 0302, 0303, 0304 and 0306, but no longer the 1309 code. It still runs, but it stalls.

Postby3FOX» During the compression stroke, the camshaft sync must be performed with one cylinder up to top dead center. In order for the sensor drive to work properly, it must be’set in’ such that it is 54 degrees off of the center line when the housing is placed on the block and secured with the clamp. Keep in mind that the gears are helical and will turn the sensor as soon as it is activated.

In the beginning, the only code I received was p1309, so I brought it to a mechanic and paid them to repair it because I wasn’t confident in my abilities with it. However, now I’m receiving misfire codes, which suggests that they didn’t do it correctly. Yesterday I changed the plugs in the truck and it has smoothed everything out to the point where I no longer have the shudder at 45-50 mph, only a minor tremble but not enough to cause the engine to misfire. I did observe that the operational voltage on my computer fluctuates from 13.2-13.9 volts. Normally, I would expect a typical alternator to provide 14.4 volts constant, and I am aware that Ford notes in the pinpoint tests for cam sensors that a defective alternator might result in those faults being generated.

  • My truck is experiencing the same problems, with codes p0345 and p0349.
  • After a two-and-a-half year failure of the timing chain guide, during which the chain chewed a hole in the timing cover, it was necessary to replace everything from the timing cover to the guides, chain, gear sprocket, both phasers, plugs, coils, and the MAF sensor.
  • So I decided to swap out the VCT solenoids to see if it would make a difference.
  • So, in December, I had the driver’s side Cam Phaser replaced, and since then, the vehicle has been emitting the code p0345.
  • As I was leaving work, I stepped on the gas pedal just as the engine began to bog down due to a loss of power.
  • At 600 rpm, it would attempt to disconnect the power.
  • Currently, the codes are p0345 and p0349, and the technician believes I require an ECM.

He stated that he checked it at the ECM and that there was no signal flowing from the wire for that particular sensor. I’m not sure what to do at this point.

During a test drive, the vehicle started right up and performed flawlessly, with the exception of a little studder or misfiring. There isn’t much to observe. It had plenty of power and only acted up when forced to come to a complete stop every now and again.

  1. When the engine stops, it begins to misfire, knocks like crazy, and makes sounds like it is tearing itself apart from the inside.
  2. Every time I power brake the engine, I am able to get it to repeat in the bay under very, very minimal throttle.
  3. I double-checked the oil level because it had recently been changed at our shop, and everything seemed OK.
  4. I haven’t checked the oil pressure using a gauge just yet.
  5. I performed a CMP / CKP Correlation test, and the results are shocking to say the least.
  6. Some suggestions would be much appreciated.
  7. I’m not sure I can do it because I’ve never had to put a chain on a 5.4L before.

I’m leaning toward the chain and components because the timing is definitely wrong, but there’s a chance that something else is going on as well.

I recall the first 3v engine I worked on doing exactly that; it only knocked at the stop after the engine had warmed up and sounded like the thing had no oil pressure; it was extremely frequent on these engines.

Having done several more since then, I’ve learned that when there is intermittent behavior like that, the phaser is to blame; when there is persistent behavior, the phaser or solenoid is to blame; nevertheless, always check the solenoid when the valve cover is off.

Instead, simply mark the new phaser’s location on the cam chain and phaser and replace it on the same spot.

The phasers were always at the back of my mind, but I’d never had to deal with them until now.

I was really having a second look at the ‘timing’ and it doesn’t appear to be that awful.

This is mostly owing to the fact that the oscilloscope revealed that both CMP sensors and the CKP sensor were operational during the events of yesterday, with no CEL being shown.

When the engine is revved above 2000 RPM for a few seconds, the phaser problem appears to be resolved.

Is there a safe method to test these phasers once they’ve been removed from the vehicle?

On occasion, it will continue to operate, but it will make a loud popping sound as if it is about to blow up. The oil level was OK, since it had just been changed at our shop, so I double-checked it. Maybe the oil level was low, and the engine was losing oil pressure, so I assumed that was the case. There has been no verification of oil pressure using a gauge on my part yet. The cluster is the only indicator that oil pressure should be enough. It’s impossible for me to accept what I’m seeing after doing a CMP/CKP Correlation test.
