This means that the technique is defective and that the results do not represent a fair comparison.
In more recent model years, according to HLDI’s noncrash fire loss report from September 2018 (attached), the relative claim frequency for noncrash fires in all 2015-2017 Hyundai cars is at or near the industry average in terms of frequency.
It’s worth noting that these inspections covered all forms of vehicle fires, not only engine fires, as part of the process.
In other words, for every 1 million Hyundai automobiles on the road during the previous two years, 49 of them had a non-crash fire.
In terms of the total number of fires, Hyundai automobiles account for a very tiny proportion of the total.
To address engine problems in our cars, we have taken a number of proactive measures, including many recalls, a software update, and an extension of the warranty.

Hyundai and Kia drivers express apprehension about getting behind the wheel of their own vehicles, citing the possibility of engine fires and failures as a source of concern. The recalls of millions of these vehicles have been ongoing for years — beginning in 2015 and continuing to this day with new models and years being added. As a result of a jointMarketplace and Go Public investigation, flaws in Canada’s recall system have been exposed — one that is heavily reliant on automakers to identify and address their own safety issues — that have allowed this to occur.

CBC producers spoke with drivers who had experienced sudden engine failures and fires, despite the fact that their Hyundai and Kia models were not listed on any recall lists.

‘That is a very serious safety issue,’ said George Iny, an advocate for automobile safety.

Investigating Hyundai and Kia recalls

Marketplace and Go Public have joined up to examine engine fires and failures in Hyundai and Kia vehicles, revealing faults in Canada’s recall system in the process. 2:00 Some of the recalls are related to metal debris found in the engines, which can cause the bearings to wear out prematurely. Others were issued to deal with repairs that were performed incorrectly as a result of a previous recall. In addition, the most recent recalls warn of an ABS brake-fluid leak that might create a short-circuit, as well as an oil leak that can seep into the alternator, among other things.

Both of which can be hazardous for drivers such as Kisha Taylor, whose automobile engine failed as she was driving on a highway in the Greater Toronto Area in September 2020, and her passengers.

‘Is this how my life ends?’

In her words, ‘I’m driving down the 407 and I realize that my foot is on the gas pedal, but I’m not getting any power.’ ‘This vehicle is coming to a screeching halt, and I’m smack dab in the center of the highway.’ ‘I instantly thought to myself, ‘Is this how my life is going to end?” It was in March of this year that CBC’s Go Public began reporting on Hyundai and Kia engine failures and fires after several viewers reported that their vehicles had suddenly died or ignited under circumstances similar to those outlined in the metal debris recall, but were told that their vehicle’s model or year was excluded from the recall.

There were just a handful of recalls at the time, all of them were connected to metallic debris and oil leaks.
It puts the vehicle into a low-speed ‘protection’ mode, allowing the driver to go to a dealership as soon as possible after the accident.
That those engines might have died or ignited for causes unrelated to the engine recall, according to the firms involved.
The warning sensor had been fitted in the car.
Her automobile died on the highway just two weeks after she purchased it, putting her out of commission.
This time, the recall urged parking outdoors and away from structures since the fire hazard persists even after the vehicle has been parked and turned off, according to the recall.

‘I’m continually on the edge of my seat, expecting that something new is going to happen with this car.’ CBC News received an email from Hyundai in which the company stated that their KSDS software had been thoroughly vetted by independent experts and was ‘state-of-the-art.’ According to Ford, it is continually monitoring emerging safety issues and will ‘issue new recalls or expand current ones’ as needed, despite the fact that not all engine failures and fires are caused by manufacturing problems, according to the carmaker.

‘Can we trust them now?’: Recalls took too long, says advocate

Center for Auto Safety researcher Jason Levine believes that the so-called Product Improvement Campaign should have been scrapped from the beginning. In 2018, the auto safety advocacy group petitioned the United States government to look into the engine fires that occurred in Hyundai and Kia vehicles. ‘Not even the issue of whether it works or not is relevant; rather, the question is: what is it intended to do? And what it is not intended to accomplish is to prevent the fire from occurring ‘he explained.

Iny, a consumer advocate, believes Hyundai and Kia spent an excessive amount of time to roll out their engine failure and fire recalls.
‘We rely on the goodwill of the automobile manufacturer to a significant extent,’ said George Iny, director of the American Automobile Association.

The cost of replacing his engine was estimated at $7,000, so he has been driving around in his driveway for more than a year in the hopes that the recall will be broadened again.

Automakers co-operating, says Transport Canada

According to CBC News, Transport Canada has advised recalls to Kia and Hyundai, and the automakers have indicated that they are cooperating with all of them. According to the federal transportation agency, its own investigations into engine difficulties have resulted in at least 11 recalls and extended warranties on cars that may have been affected by the problems. Following customer feedback, Levine stated that Hyundai and Kia should have been aware that more vehicles needed to be recalled in both the United States and Canada before regulators suggested they do so.

This man’s car engine caught fire while parked

While Abhi Sankar’s Hyundai Elantra was parked in a garage, the engine caught fire and exploded into flames. Hyundai blamed the incident on insufficient maintenance, but he believes it was caused by a manufacturing flaw. 3:26 ‘When they have a problem with their automobile, they’re not going to go straight to the government; they’re going to go back to the individuals who can fix it,’ he explained. This is a complaint against a dealership or a manufacturer, according to the dealer or the manufacturer.

Levine stated that his appeal to the United States government was based on around 120 fire reports he had received regarding Hyundai and Kia automobiles.

Following a three-year inquiry, the United States government decided that Hyundai and Kia were negligent in their handling of the engine fire recalls, and fined them a record-breaking $210 million dollars.

Although no such fines have been imposed in Canada, the recalls have continued. Transport Canada is currently conducting an investigation of the effectiveness of the KSDS early warning system, but has not reached a conclusion at this time.

Krystan Kapron and her new husband were in the midst of preparing for a down payment on a property when their automobile caught on fire unexpectedly. They had to use their funds to pay off the remaining balance of the loan on the burnt automobile, as well as the expense of purchasing a new car. (Submitted by Krystan Kapron) When Krystan Kapron’s 2017 Hyundai Tucson exploded into flames on an Ontario highway in October, she had no warning system in place to provide her with any notice. Hyundai slapped her with the price, despite the fact that her warranty was still in effect.

The 2019 Tucson was subject to the ABS recall in September 2020, but the Kapron’s 2017 model wasn’t included in the recall until the end of December – two months after the fire occurred.

Hyundai, on the other hand, refused to insure her vehicle.

Class-action lawsuit doesn’t cover all affected vehicles

A class-action lawsuit against Hyundai and Kia has resulted in both companies promising money to drivers as part of a settlement. The deal is scheduled to be finalized in Ontario and Quebec by the end of February. The settlement does not acknowledge culpability, but it does provide drivers with longer warranties as well as the possibility of depreciation reimbursement in order to prevent additional lawsuits.

Because the settlement only mentions a few of the earlier engines, many of the more current vehicles that have been introduced are not included in the settlement. Taylor may be able to take advantage of the situation, but Kapron will not be able to because her 2017 Tucson has not been named. Levine said he wants to see manufacturers’ data shared publicly and internationally so that regulators and advocates aren’t forced to rely solely on consumer complaints, while Iny wants to see more investment from the Canadian government in order to expedite Transport Canada’s investigation processes.

‘These are automobiles for the family. What happens if there are children in the car? ‘Kapron expressed himself in this way. Their cars’ safety requirements must be taken into serious consideration, according to the report.

Kia, Hyundai recall over 500,000 vehicles as fire risk spreads

DETROIT– Hyundai and Kia have added more than a half-million vehicles to a three-and-a-half-year-old run of recalls in the United States due to engine failure and fires. Three recalls announced by the government on Thursday add fresh concerns and cars to the Korean manufacturers’ long list of safety issues, which has resulted in hundreds of complaints about fires from around the country in recent years. Since September 2015, the businesses have recalled almost 2.4 million cars due to fire and engine failure issues, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether they were too tardy in repairing the vehicles that were recalled.

The largest of three recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday affects about 379,000 Kia Soul compact SUVs with 1.6-liter engines manufactured between 2012 and 2016.

This might result in aberrant combustion as well as damage to the pistons and connecting rods of the engine.

Aside from that, Hyundai and Kia have issued a recall for 152,000 Tuscon SUVs from 2011 to 2013, as well as Sportage SUVs from 2011 and 2012, to address an engine oil pan leak that has the potential to cause fires.

‘It is possible that oil will leak from the oil pan as a consequence of a manufacturing problem with the liquid sealing procedure.

After the charity Center for Auto Safety petitioned the authorities to investigate the fires in Souls last year, documents reveal that Kia began looking into the fires in the neighborhood.

All Souls equipped with 1.6-liter engines and manufactured between July 8, 2011 and August 11, 2016 are being recalled.

If the catalytic converter and the engine have been damaged, they will be replaced as well, at no additional cost.

The repair for the oil pan problem in the Tucson and Sportage recalls is still in the early stages of development.

The Center for Auto Safety, in a letter to politicians sent on Wednesday, requested that Congress take action to hold Hyundai and Kia accountable for neglecting to fix millions of fire-prone vehicles.

The following statement was issued by the organization on Thursday in response to the most recent product recall: ‘The recall of Kia Souls is a better late than never measure that, ideally, will correct the fire-causing problem.

According to the recall notice, a potential manufacturing defect that might result in an engine oil leak and potentially cause engine failure and stalling and in some situations, even a fire, is being addressed by this recall.

It is possible that oil will leak from the oil pan as a consequence of a manufacturing problem with the liquid sealing procedure.
