Hyundai and Kia drivers express apprehension about getting behind the wheel of their own vehicles, citing the possibility of engine fires and failures as a source of concern. The recalls of millions of these vehicles have been ongoing for years — beginning in 2015 and continuing to this day with new models and years being added. As a result of a jointMarketplace and Go Public investigation, flaws in Canada’s recall system have been exposed — one that is heavily reliant on automakers to identify and address their own safety issues — that have allowed this to occur.

CBC producers spoke with drivers who had experienced sudden engine failures and fires, despite the fact that their Hyundai and Kia models were not listed on any recall lists.

‘That is a very serious safety issue,’ said George Iny, an advocate for automobile safety.

Investigating Hyundai and Kia recalls

Automakers co-operating, says Transport Canada

Taylor may be able to take advantage of the situation, but Kapron will not be able to because her 2017 Tucson has not been named. Levine said he wants to see manufacturers’ data shared publicly and internationally so that regulators and advocates aren’t forced to rely solely on consumer complaints, while Iny wants to see more investment from the Canadian government in order to expedite Transport Canada’s investigation processes.

The repair for the oil pan problem in the Tucson and Sportage recalls is still in the early stages of development.

The Center for Auto Safety, in a letter to politicians sent on Wednesday, requested that Congress take action to hold Hyundai and Kia accountable for neglecting to fix millions of fire-prone vehicles.
