On 2-11-12, Ford released a service bulletin to address a FALSE problem code P0096 F150 that appeared on Ford F150 vehicles with with the 3.5L engine and with a construction date on or after 2/7/12.
What is trouble code P0096?
Performance of the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Range (P0096). The computer calculates the right air/fuel mixes based on data from the intake air temperature sensor. It anticipates seeing numbers that fall inside a specific range. If the numbers go outside of specified range, the computer generates a fault code and illuminates the check engine light on the instrument panel.
Fix for P0096 F150
In most circumstances, the sensor itself as well as the wire harness would need to be tested in order to resolve the error code. But in this particular instance, Ford engineers have found and fixed a software bug that is misinterpreting data from the sensor. If your F150 is equipped with the 3.5L engine with GTDI fuel injection and was manufactured on or before February 7, 2012, you qualify. It is NOT necessary to replace the sensor. What does that mean?
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a general powertrain code, which means that it applies to any cars that are equipped with the OBD-II diagnostic system. Despite the fact that they are general, the particular repair processes may differ based on the make and model. The IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor is a thermistor whose resistance fluctuates in response to the temperature of the engine’s intake air intake. Typically, a two-wire sensor is used. Powered by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), one wire is provided with 5 volts, while the other is connected to ground.
Due to the high resistance of cold intake air, when the signal voltage is high, the resistance of the signal is high.
This code indicates that the PCM saw a larger-than-normal change in a shorter period of time than expected on the2 IAT signal circuit, as shown by the code.
Symptoms
Because this code is most likely indicating an occasional problem with the IAT circuit, it is possible that there are no symptoms at this time. The MIL, on the other hand, will very certainly be there. It is possible that the vehicle could experience some drivability issues, but it is more probable that the driver would not notice any visible symptoms.
Causes
Due to the fact that this code is most likely indicating an intermittent problem with the IAT circuit, it is possible that there are no symptoms present at this time.
There will almost certainly be a MIL present. A few drivability issues may arise, but it is more probable that the driver will not detect any visible signs of a problem with the vehicle.

I have a 2018 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD with a 2.7-liter V6 engine. I received a computer code of P0096 (intake air temperature sensor or air charge sensor?) as a result of this.

What Does Code P0096Mean?
Engine designers have devised a variety of methods for extracting additional power from a given engine displacement, with forced induction being one among them. It is necessary to use a compressor in the intake because it drives more air into the cylinders than the engine could usually take in on its own. In order to generate compression, turbochargers use the exhaust gas flow to turn on the compressor, whereas superchargers employ a belt-driven compressor, both of which provide identical effects.
- By forcing more air into the cylinder, which is why it’s called ‘forced induction,’ more oxygen is available for combustion.
- In general, the addition of forced induction to an engine can result in up to 40% greater power than a normally aspirated engine of the same displacement when compared to the original engine.

- There are two IAT sensors on forced-induction engines.

Whenever the ECM detects a problem with IAT2, such as a temperature or voltage that is outside of specification, it will activate the malfunction indication lamp (MIL) and record a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in memory, which will be P0096 Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance.
- ECM Programming – A number of TSBs mentioning P0096 have been issued on a variety of various makes and models, with the majority of them requiring a reflash of the ECM to be completed. This can only be completed at the dealership’s service center. Inadequate Charge Cooling – Intercoolers and cooling systems are intended to lower the temperature of the intake air in order to enhance combustion after charging. It is possible that overheating will occur if the intercooler airflow is impeded or the coolant pump is damaged, and the ECM will interpret this as a sensor fault. Land Rover Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) often pertain to improper installation of the supercharger cooling pump, which might result in the pump running reverse. The repair includes reprogramming the ECM, installing a new pump, and rewiring the connection. Weather — Some manufacturers configure P0096 for temperature correlations, such as requiring that the IAT, IAT2, and CAC (charge air cooler) temperatures be within 30 degrees Fahrenheit (16.7 degrees Celsius) after a 6-hour cold soak. Depending on the conditions, the ECM may take these temperature data as an indication that there is an issue. Some of the ECM reflashes may be able to resolve this problem.
What are the symptoms of code P0096?
It is possible that, aside from the MIL, and depending on the failure mode, you will notice poor engine performance. This is particularly true during acceleration, however you may not notice anything while driving at moderate speeds or while cruising. However, certain ECMs may internally replace a particular temperature measurement in their calculations, which may enable the car to start, although with a rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and maybe a random misfire.
How do you troubleshoot code P0096?
If the MIL is not present, and depending on the failure mode, you may notice poor engine performance, particularly during acceleration, while you may not notice anything while cruising or driving at moderate speeds or at cruising rates. Although certain ECMs may internally replace a specific temperature measurement in their calculations, this may allow the car to function, albeit you may still have rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, or even occasional misfire.
- Scan Tool– This is the quickest and most accurate method of determining adequate IAT2 values. Keep an eye on the IAT and IAT2 values while using KOEO (key on engine off). IAT and IAT2 should be almost the same when the engine is turned off, or at the very least within a few degrees of one another.
- Check to see whether IAT2 changes when you wiggle the connection. It shouldn’t be the case. If this occurs, look for an issue with a pin, connection, or harness. DVOMHarness is the next step. Check for damage and make any required repairs. IAT2 readings that are unexpected, such as -30 degrees Fahrenheit or 300 degrees Fahrenheit, indicate a sensor or circuit problem. If IAT2 is reading appropriately, consider an intermittent sensor or harness problem, maybe an ECM problem. Disconnect IAT2 from the rest of the system. If the reading does not change, it is likely that there is an issue with the circuit. If the reading changes, it is possible that the sensor has failed. If required, repair or replace the item.

A three-wire IAT2 is checked, KOEO is maintained, and the connection is backprobed using the DVOMSensor Check. Check for a 5 V reference voltage as well as a changeable signal voltage, and compare the results to the temperature / voltage table in your service handbook. Remove IAT2 from the vehicle and switch it off to check for a two-wire IAT2. In order to determine resistance across the sensor terminals, you must first determine the current temperature and then compare it to a temperature / resistance table, which may be found in your service manual.
- If the voltage / resistance readings are inaccurate, there may be an issue with the sensor. Whenever necessary, replace
- In order to ensure that the voltage and resistance are right, the sensor should be tested at various temperatures, for as by submerging it in boiling or frigid water. If the sensor continues to function properly, suspect an issue with the harness.
- The DVOMHarness Check function checks the harness that connects the ECM to the IAT2. To do this, switch the key off and detach the ECM connection. Use your digital multimeter to examine the resistance of the ECM connector in relation to the temperature resistance table, which may be found in the repair manual.
- If the resistance is as indicated, look for signs of an intermittent issue, such as a loose connection or a frayed wire. Keep an eye on your resistance readings as you wriggle the connection and wire harness about. If the resistance does not match the specification, unplug IAT2 and verify the resistance.
- If the resistance varies, it is possible that the sensor is faulty. Whenever necessary, replace
- If the resistance does not alter, the fault is most likely with the wire harness. Check for short circuits between the power, ground, and signal wires, as well as between the power, ground, and signal wires and the body ground. Make any required repairs
- Consider that the sensor is faulty if its resistance fluctuates. Whenever necessary, substitute

Even when I am traveling at highway speeds up a hill, I can feel a miss in my engine. Perhaps this is unique to me. On level ground, it is barely perceptible, but on an inclination, it is very noticeable. Is there anyone else who is suffering with this? While driving, I have noticed some weird idleing and shifting patterns. The salesman informed me that it is the new 6 speed gearbox, which shifts more frequently than the old transmission. Although extremely unusual, it appears to be the sole engine-related issue that the Ecoboosts have encountered. I’m willing to wager that the stored code in the PCM says ‘Misfire’ in some way. Postbymonkeytx» When the computer is first started up, I only notice the idle problem. 2011 Ford F150 Ecoboost with 600 miles on the clock and a 3.55 rear axle. It appears to idle between 400 and 700 rpm at starting, then settles down after a few minutes of operation. While driving, I’ve been keeping an eye on the transmission downshift to make sure it’s working properly. So far, there have been no problems.

Postbylancenunley» I took it to the dealer on Saturday morning, and the salesperson discovered that there were no saved codes. He said that the roughness I felt traveling up hills was caused by the tires. I believe him. There were no misses on the computer, according to the results. Everyone is baffled as to why the engine light illuminated on Thursday night, and the truck missed so badly that it rocked for many miles. Both of the instances in which this has occurred have occurred in damp weather.

Postbylancenunley» There were no saved codes when I took it to the dealer the next morning. He said that the roughness I noticed when climbing hills was caused by the tires. There were no misses on the computer, according to the data. Nobody knows why the engine light turned on on Thursday night, and the truck missed so badly that it rocked for several miles after that. Wet conditions have been present both times this has happened. I guess I’ll simply keep driving it till something like this happens.

»It has happened twice to me: once at approximately 4000 miles while pulling a trailer weighing approximately 2600 pounds, when I went to pass another vehicle, I hit the gas and the truck lost all power, and the second time yesterday when I wasn’t pulling anything, when I went to pass another vehicle, I hit the gas again and the truck lost all power. Each time, I had to let off the throttle and restart the engine, and everything worked properly. I ran a car health report, and it said that everything was in working order.

PostbyEdCaffreyMS» Since taking receipt of my EB in April, I’ve been following down problems with the vehicle. The ‘stutter’ while the computer is idle has been there at random since the beginning. I’ve also experienced troubles with bad gas mileage and a variety of crazy technical problems. When my truck was in the shop the previous time, they discovered three loose grounding spots on the chassis (from the factory). In response, Ford provided a list of five grounding points to examine, which they incorporated into their solution.
The RO also mentioned that they will be checking for ‘water infiltration’ at a number of different connections.
My truck was manufactured in February, and according to what I’ve heard, now that they’ve discovered the loose grounds that were causing my truck’s difficulties, the dealership has resolved problems with numerous other trucks that were caused by the same loose grounds as mine.

By the time I reached home, my gas mileage had decreased to an average of 15 miles per gallon at 70 miles per hour. There are no codes set. The car would shift down if you pushed on the throttle, but it would not accelerate because of the poor mi. There are no codes set. The dealer upgraded the software but was unable to locate anything else.
Could someone please share the grounding information so that we can verify the grounds mentioned in the previous post?

What the P0096 code means
If the engine control module (ECM) determines that the intake air temperature sensor 2 (IAT2) is not operating within its normal sensor range, the code P0096 indicates that the ECM cannot use the sensor output to determine intake air temperature and the code P0097 indicates that the sensor is not operating within its normal sensor range.
What causes the P0096 code?
When compared to the engine coolant and mass air temperature sensors, the intake air temperature sensor 2 is not precise to within 2 degrees of the engine coolant temperature. Typically, this happens when the engine is cold-started after it has been idle for more than 5 hours.
Comparing the intake air temperature sensor 2 to the mass air flow sensor when the sensor is starting warm and heat soaked from 10 seconds to 30 minutes, the sensor does not perform within specification range within 2 degrees for the sensor.
What are the symptoms of the P0096 code?
- The ECM will replace a sensor input of 70 degrees Fahrenheit for the sensor’s out-of-specified measurement
- If the outside temperature is more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit difference from the 70 degrees Fahrenheit the ECM uses as a replacement output, the engine may run rough or hesitate. The Check Engine Light will be activated, indicating that there is a problem with the vehicle.
How does a mechanic diagnose the P0096 code?
- Observe and inspect the electrical connections and wire harness that link to the intake air temperature sensor
- It clears codes and checks to see if the code is returned
- It examines the output of the IAT2 sensor and determines if it is within specifications when compared to the IAT in the mass air sensor, which is within 2° F.
