Hello, everyone! This is something I wrote on tor/Cartalk, but, I thought I’d ask you guys as well. The current issue is with our 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5, which just had the p0507 code lifted, which indicated that the ‘idle speed was greater than planned.’ The Altima, on the other hand, is now idling at 700/800 rpms while running on this code. I withdrew the throttler and cleaned it nonetheless, and then I did the ‘ Idle Relearn Procedure’ as described above (necessary because now the idle throttles between 1000 and 2000 rpms)
- Check to see that the accelerator pedal has been fully depressed. Wait 3 seconds after turning the ignition on but before starting the engine. To switch off the ignition, press the button again and wait 10 seconds. Repeat this method three more times. Within 5 seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal five times. Wait 5 seconds before depressing and holding the accelerator pedal completely. When the Malfunction indication light has been blinking for about 10 seconds, it will change from steady to blinking. It takes around 9 seconds after that for the light to go from blinking to steady once more. Within three seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and the automobile will begin to move. Allow for some downtime. Wait 20 seconds before continuing.
What I’m having trouble with is that I’ve completed this procedure ten times already and have yet to see the flashing check engine light described in step 4. There wasn’t even a gleam in her eye. What do you think I’m doing wrong, and how can I fix it? I have attempted to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery over night while the +/ buttons were pressed on the keyboard. Greetings, gentlemen. Nissan Murano SL AWD (2003 model year) Okay, so it all started with my P0303 misfire cylinder 3 error code. While I was there, I changed the 1, 3, and 5coil packs, as well as the three spark plugs, all of which had 100,000 mile Iridiums. When I can afford three more coils, I’ll be able to easily and quickly add the remaining three without any difficulty. I did not separate the intake manifold and plenum in this project. I removed them in one piece from the rest of the outfit.
- While I waited for the components to arrive, I sprayed ‘Throttle Body and Mass Air Flow’ cleaner inside the throttle body to clear it rid of any debris that had accumulated.
- Skip ahead to the point where, after reassembling everything, I now have an idle speed of around 1,100 to 1,200 RPM and the SES indicator on.
- When I reassembled the car, I double-checked and triple-checked to make sure I didn’t miss anything along the way.

- I purchased a can of carb cleaning and sprayed it all over the engine, including the base of the intake manifold, but I saw no difference in RMP after doing so.
- According to what I’ve read on the good ole internet, a code should be expected when you clean out the throttle body, and the new high RPMs are due to the fact that the air flow through the clean throttle body is quicker.
- That’s exactly what I did.
This is where I require assistance.
I go through the method of relearning the idle air volume a second time, and the idle returns to normal.
The same process is repeated, the idle returns to normal, and the light remains on.
There were no evident vacuum leaks heard, and carb cleaner poured all over the engine, including the base of the intake manifold, revealed no leaks.
By the way, when re-torquing the intake manifold, I made sure to go through the process in the appropriate order, gently tightening each bolt.
That didn’t seem to be quite enough, so I added another 1/4 turn to each side and left it at that point.
Being able to get the idle speed down to normal but then having it revert to high idle after a short period of driving is what has me perplexed at this point. Any suggestions on where to look next would be much appreciated! Thank you so much, gentlemen.

Sparky’s Answers – 2004 Nissan Altima, P0507 Surging / High Idle
This 2004 Nissan Altima 2.5S came in with a high cold idle followed by a high and surging warm idle. A few of the things I noticed right away was a fairly new battery. And a new starter assembly. I wanted to take a look at the throttle body, so I removed the intake tube by loosening the clamp at the Mass Air Flow sensor. Then the clamp at the throttle body. I had to disconnect the vent tube to the valve cover and this hose that is the transmission vent hose. It is very important that this hose be put back in place when the intake tube is reinstalled.
- Notice the run marks left by throttle body cleaner being sprayed into the air horn.
- I do not have a Nissan Consult II scan tool so I needed to perform a manual relearn procedure for Idle Air Volume.
- I wanted to document the relearn procedure step by step so I started again with the factory procedure as given by Mitchell.

During this time the SES lightwill start blinking.
The factory information states that the nextstep will be for the SES light to turn off.
10.With the engine running at 1000 rpm or less allow the engine to runfor at least 20 seconds.
After the 20 second wait period, rev the engine to 3000rpm two or three times and allow the engine to settle back down toidle.
Idle and timing should now both be withinspecifications.
11.If all criteria are not met the relearn will not work.
If your warm idle speed is above 1000 rpm and it needs to be dropped to perform the Idle Air Volume Relearn, you must disconnect the wiring harness to no more than two fuel injectors.
I used long needle nosed pliers to do this.
Now number four injector is disconnected.
To my surprise the engine ran fairly well and dropped to about 800 rpm.
I then reconnected the injector harnesses and performed the IAVR again.
Finally all is well again with this Nissan. I used these pliers to release the injector connectors. I had to switch to these to reconnect them. Yes, this is a medical device, but you can get them at flea markets and thrift stores.
Idle Air Volume Learning (will not work)
Last week, I cleaned the throttle body, installed a new maf, and performed other routine maintenance tasks that I intended to do before the season began. Initially, I was apprehensive about touching the throttle body, but upon closer inspection, I saw that it was really dusty, and I cleaned it out using throttle body cleaning and a microfiber cloth. My manual throttle valve movement and cleaning behind it and everywhere else was successful, but I did not remove the throttle body assembly from the intake manifold during the process.
As a result, I followed all of the processes for the relearn: 1.
Learning the Released Position of the Accelerator Pedal 3.
Learning the Volume of Idle Air The rpm will not drop below 800-900 rpm no matter what I do, and I can hear my truck idle at a high RPM because of my exhaust arrangement.
I spoke with a local Nissan technician, who informed me that I may have harmed my Tb by physically shifting the plate, and that I should avoid doing so in the future.
No matter how hard I tried, the learning technique would not be accepted.
I just wanted to provide an update to everyone since I was able to address the idle air volume issue that had occurred throughout the idle air volume learning method.
