What Does Code P0520Mean?

Fault code for the OBD II Engine oil pressure sensor/switch -circuit malfunction’ is the definition of the P0520 generic code, which is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects either a genuine low oil pressure condition or a malfunction in the oil pressure switch and/or its control circuit. Oil pressure switches are usually just basic pressure switches that are powered by a reference voltage supplied by the PCM in most cases. As a result, the PCM is able to ‘convert’ changes in resistance caused by changes in oil pressure into a reasonably accurate representation of the actual oil pressure at any given moment and engine speed.

  1. In reality, the PCM in a specific application is programmed to recognize a range of signal voltages (that approximately correlate to actual oil pressure(s)) that reflect the allowable oil pressure range for that application, and this range is determined by the manufacturer.
  2. Non-professional mechanics should also be aware that certain applications utilise more than one oil pressure switch, which should be taken into consideration.
  3. Both switches are not interchangeable, which is why they are always distinguished from one another by color or some other easily distinguishable feature.
  4. In rare cases, when code P0520 occurs, the PCM may additionally set code P2105 – ‘Throttle Actuator Control System – Forced Engine Shutdown,’ which indicates that the PCM has begun a forced shut-down to safeguard the engine.

What are the common causes of code P0520?

The following are some examples of typical causes of P0520:

  • Oil pressure switch that is not working properly
  • Wiring and/or connections that have been damaged, burned, shorted, disconnected, or corroded
  • The use of engine oil that is not appropriate for the engine Unacceptable levels of basic preventative maintenance, such as failing to replace the oil and the oil filter on a regular basis
  • The engine is experiencing excessive mechanical wear. Mechanic failure of internal engine components such as (but not limited to) the oil pump, the oil pressure relief valve, or even the timing chain tensioners and/or guides. PCM has failed or is failing. Remember that this is an extremely unusual occurrence in P0520 cases, and that the issue must therefore be found somewhere else before the controller is replaced.

What are the symptoms of code P0520?

The following are examples of typical symptoms associated with code P0520:

  • Storage of error codes as well as illumination of a warning light
  • The PCM may decide to turn off the engine. If this occurs, the code P2105 is nearly probably going to be present. When the engine is operating, there may be a variety of mechanical sounds present, depending on the application and the nature of the problem being addressed. Ticking, thudding, banging, and rumbling sounds, which fluctuate in pitch as the engine speed varies, are examples of engine noises. NOTE: Non-professional mechanics should be aware that a malfunction in the oil pressure switch’s control circuit can cause a low oil pressure condition to appear, and vice versa; however, because the PCM cannot always distinguish between the two conditions, the actual oil pressureMUSTbe tested independently of the operation/serviceability of the oil pressure switch and its control circuit to ensure that both the oil pressure switch and its control circuit are in proper working order Important to note: Some applications employ an electronic-controlled oil pressure gauge on the dashboard, which means that oil pressure gauges of this sort cannot be used to verify that the actual oil pressure at any given time is within permitted limits.

  1. Always check the oil pressure using a separate and dedicated pressure gauge (which attaches to the engine where the oil pressure switch is screwed in) to ensure that it is within the prescribed range of pressure.
  2. This information may be useful if an intermittent defect is subsequently discovered and is determined to be the cause.
  3. NOTE1: Prior to starting with the diagnostic/repair procedure, make sure the oil level is at the proper level and that all other issues have been investigated and corrected as needed.
  4. In many circumstances, such as when a low oil level or low oil pressure condition prohibits the proper working of hydraulic valve lifters, the ticking sounds will disappear after the underlying problem has been corrected or eliminated.
  5. Perform a complete visual check of all wiring, looking for any signs of damage, burnt wiring, disconnected wiring, shorted wiring, or corroded wiring or connections.
  6. If the code continues to appear, prepare to conduct resistance, reference voltage, and continuity tests on all of the wire that is connected to it.
  7. Make certain, however, that the oil pressure switch is disconnected from the PCM throughout the resistance and continuity tests to avoid damage to the controller.
  8. Replacing switches that do not meet the manufacturer’s criteria with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) components, clearing any codes, and rescanning the system to check whether the problem reappears.
  9. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that the problem has been remedied just because the oil pressure warning light does not illuminate immediately or does not glow and go out when the engine is first started.

Always remember that even if the scanner indicates that the oil pressure is normal, the scanner uses the same information as the PCM, which means that both the PCM and the scanner could theoretically indicate an oil pressure condition that is based on incorrect input data, or that is predicated on incorrect input data.

  1. Note at this time that if the oil pressure switch is removed from the engine, the scanner will not record or show any information about the oil pressure level.
  2. Additionally, the majority of gauges are supplied with a range of fittings, which allow the tubing to be connected to virtually any engine at the point where the oil pressure switch screws into the engine.
  3. The male threads on the oil pressure sender may be used as a sample, and then the CORRECT fitting can be purchased at a hardware shop in order to avoid damaging the engine, which could make it difficult to reinstall the oil pressure switch.
  4. It is also assumed that while the engine is idled, there are no mechanical sounds to be heard.
  5. Check to see that the engine is completely shut down and cold, or at the very least cool, before removing the oil pressure switch.
  6. Use the CORRECT fittings to attach the oil pressure gauge to the engine where the oil pressure switch came out and make sure that all connections are properly tightened prior to starting the engine.
  7. Start the engine and let it to idle for a few minutes.

Taking note of the reading, compare it to both the previous reading provided by the scanner and the value indicated in the instructions.

As the engine begins to warm up, there may be a very tiny decrease in the pressure displayed by the gauge.

This is not a cause for alarm as long as the pressure does not fall below the minimum specified value while the engine is at operating temperature.

Turn off the engine as soon as possible and take the car to a reputable repair shop for a thorough diagnostic and repair.

Compare the reading acquired with the reading displayed on the scanner earlier in the procedure and with the value indicated in the procedure manual.

Please keep in mind that if the oil pressure lowers continuously when the engine is operating at 3000 RPM, or dips while the engine is warming up, there is a technical fault inside the engine that is allowing oil pressure to escape through excessively wide clearances.

For the most part, most non-professional mechanics are unable to identify and fix issues of this sort since their abilities, knowledge, and equipment are inadequate.

In contrast, readings of oil pressure that are just barely below permissible lower limits are suggestive of severe wear or other mechanical problems within the engine.

Replacement of the oil pressure switch alone will not resolve the problem; instead, replacing or rebuilding the engine will provide a more effective long-term solution.
