2011 Outback P2096 Problems

I came across a conversation on IATN concerning a 2008 WRX that failed smog and had a P2096 code set, which I thought interesting. It was determined that the problem was caused by a displaced Rear O2 sensor. The scan data revealed a very minor difference between the old and new sensors when compared side by side. I’ve included a photo of the scan data for your reference. Examine the data on the left, which shows the voltage of the old O2 sensor 2, and compare it to the data on the right, which shows the voltage of the new O2 sensor.

  • Approximately one volt or so.
  • The technician was unable to raise the voltage of the old sensor any higher than it already was.
  • The new sensor goes one step farther.
  • The fact why many individuals overlook the rear O2 sensors, which might create trim difficulties, is because they were taught that the rear O2 sensors only evaluate the cat efficiency, which may be true on older vehicles, but not on modern cars is incorrect.
  • I’d consider checking to see whether the back O2 voltage is higher than the front.
  • Most scan tools will not show negative voltage, but a digital volt meter will.

Long story short, I’ve thrown a P2096 CEL (I believe it’s “Bank 1 Fuel Trim – Too Lean”), and I’ve read up on how to fix it, and I’ll try that tonight or tomorrow. What I’d like to do here is try to shed some light on the cause of the CEL since many people seem to have this problem.In my case, it shows up when I lift off the throttle after prolonged highway driving (an hour or so, cruise or no cruise). I know others have had this happen under regular driving conditions.The first mod I did to the car was AP and Cobb catted DP. I wanted to be “nice” to the car so I ran stage one for a while and popped up the P0420. Expected. Went to the stage 2 map and the CEL is now suppressed, but I still get DTC’s when I read the codes. I did the mechanical fix with one antifouler, and got different DTC’s. Something to the order of “main 02 sensor slow response.” Can’t remember the exact wording.Stay with me.Then I installed my HKS catless UP, and now this P2096 is showing up. This makes me wonder what it is that causes the code to show up. Was the removal of the UP cat the straw the broke the camel’s back, or was this the primary cause? Could it be the fact that I’m not using the 2.2k resistor fix yet? I would imagine that cats use heat energy to convert toxic to non-toxic gases, so one would expect EGT to go up with a catless UP. Maybe that’s why the computer thinks the mixture is too lean – judging by the EGT and not the O2 sensor?If you’ve made it this far, thanks, and congratulations.Now, who’s got some ideas?

From my understanding, the P2096 is caused by a low and/or inconsistent reading by the rear O2 sensor. It usually shows up when the antifouler/extention places the O2 sensor too far away from the exhaust stream to get a proper/consistent reading. From what I have read, there seems to be a certain range (distance and reading) that will not trigger either CEL, however, AFAIK, at this point only the P0420 can be “fixed” with an AP/Ecutek flash. I experience the P2096 with my Lachute DP (HFC), and others have had the same issue with some PDE DP’s. Not all people seem to experience it, and not under the same conditions.

I’m planning on removing the O2 sensor mechanical fix to test your theory (and that of some others). I just think it’s odd that this code never showed up until I installed the UP – I drove to Michigan to do the work with some friends with no problem, then on the way home it showed up.Does the ECU use the EGT readings for anything other than a fail-safe?

My bet is that you’ve introduced an exhaust leak somewhere between the front A/F sensor and the rear O2 sensor.

BTW, you shouldn’t use any kind of rear O2 sensor “fix” if you’re running a Cobb stage 2 base map.

Take off the anti-fouler, put a 2.2K ohm resistor in place of the uppipe EGT sensor and call it a day. The is no point whatsoever to running the antifouler when you have an AP. The anti-fouler is what causes the P2096 code.

I then did the STI swap, and had left the anti-fouler’s in, and I was starting to get the P2096 code thrown on my highway commutes. I just recently pulled them out, and now I don’t throw a CEL anymore!

That was indeed the fix that I was going to try – take out the antifouler. As to why I put it in in the first place, I live in NY and had to pass inspection. The inspection waters are fairly unchartered in NY due to a recent (and major) change in the laws and reporting procedures, so I was trying to get even the DTC’s to go away. I still have some, and it still passed, so F it, out comes the antifouler.

Cobb are going to delete the P2096 CEL at the next map update, which was going to be this spring last time I heard from Christian.I have a PDE DP and have been having this problem for 6 months or more now, PITA, but you learn to live with it.
