Currently, I own a 1998 Ford F150 5.4 4×4 with a little more than 100,000 miles on it. In recent weeks, there has been an intermittent chirping/squealing sound emanating from the engine. The drive belt was still chirping after I changed it, so I looked into it more. I then changed the belt tensioner, however the noise continued to be present. So, eventually, I thought I had it figured out and changed the idler pulleys on both ends of the engine. The car made no noise as I was driving around the block, but the moment I turned into my driveway, it began chirping and screeching once more.

I made a commitment to myself that if I ever discovered out what was causing this annoying chirping, I would provide the solution. It turned out to be my fan clutch in the end. I’ve experienced similar problems with other vehicles in the past, but I’ve never had to replace the fan clutch. I’d never seen one of them turn bad before. Whatever the case, it is not difficult nor expensive to accomplish.

Postbyemdub» Right now, I’m going through the same same thing you are. Belt chirps at random intervals. It doesn’t matter if it’s chilly or hot. It has nothing to do with acceleration. It has nothing to do with the AC compressor turning on or off. The duration is really brief. Every now and again, there’s a brief, extremely loud chirp. I replaced all three idler pulleys one at a time, spinning all of the rotating parts in the process, and everything appears to be functioning properly. I changed the alternator the day before yesterday.
I guess I’ll give the fan clutch a shot now and see if it works better.
When I’m through, I’ll have a great collection of perfectly good used components to show for it.

Postbyemdub» Last night, I replaced the fan clutch, and the problem was resolved as a result. To this day, I’m baffled as to why the fan clutch would be the source of this random intermittent belt chirp problem, but it appears to be the case. By the way, the old fan clutch is totally functional. When cold, there is some hydraulic resistance to the spin. There is absolutely no play in it. That, however, was the source of my commotion. A few hundred dollars may have been saved if I had tested the fan clutch a little earlier.
I neglected to mention that this was on my 2004 Ford F150 4×4 (non-heritage) with a 5.4LCrazystng1 engine and transmission.

Postbygoman1» Currently, I own a 1998 expedition 5.4. Since I purchased my serpentine belt about a month ago, it has been squealing constantly. It’s really inconvenient and humiliating. I rebuilt the tensioner as well as both idler pulleys, and the alternator was brand new when I purchased the truck. Because my air conditioning wasn’t working and my clutch wouldn’t even engage, I assumed that was the source of the problem. I didn’t want to spend the money on an air conditioning compressor right now because it was getting close to winter, so I decided to get a bypass pulley instead.
- Even if it does not screech as much while it is cold, the noise becomes louder and more consistent as the machine heats up.

Postby3FOX» Due to the fact that it is a single drive belt, it must simultaneously accelerate the water pump, the alternator, the power steering, and the air conditioning compressor. A scream can occur if one of these units is creating excessive drag on the belt, which causes the belt to lose traction. A similar sound can be heard during upshifting under heavy acceleration, when all of the units must react at the same time to varying RPMs in the same direction.
