I struggled home, stopping every 10 miles to top off the coolant. I was able to remove the water pump, however the paper gasket had been damaged. I’ve had awful experiences using paper gaskets in the past. When I assisted a buddy in replacing his timing belt and water pump, the paper gasket failed to seal completely, allowing coolant to leak out as I poured it.

Waterpumps on numerous ‘Merican autos forced me to develop the practice of goopingthe bolts, which were frequently submerged in water while I was working on them.

If in doubt, I would recommend Hylomar Blue, which is a thin, non-setting jointing material that I have used successfully.
It should not be essential to use sealant if the joint faces are in excellent condition; instead, I would merely verify that both sides of the gasket are thoroughly rubbed with engine grease before reinstalling it.
This will seal nicely on bad surfaces even if you do not use a real gasket, and it is simple to remove if you ever need to get to the pump itself again.
