DIY Axle Replacement

I recently purchased a new axle, which has finally resolved the clunking at a stop as well as the vibration when traveling at 60 mph. The inner joint and boot were both clicking, so I decided to replace the entire axle rather than just the inner joint and boot. Only the PASSENGER SIDE (right side) of the 05 TSX was replaced. The situation should be identical on the drivers’ side, with the exception of a little amount of tranny fluid leaking out. The following tools and materials were used: -A set of jacks Stands -floor jack with a 1/2 and 3/8 ratchet on it -Socket with a diameter of 36mm -a half-breaker bar -3/8 torque wrench; 10mm, 17mm, and 19mm socket and box end wrenches; -3/8 torque wrench; -a big bar, such as a pry bar -hammer -Pin Punch-Pliers are a kind of pliers.

  • Step 1: Ensure that your vehicle is in park and that the hand brake is engaged.
  • Remove the middle cap as well.
  • It didn’t take much for the bolt to finally come loose.
  • Step 3: While the car is still on the ground, loosen the lug nuts and jack it up to remove the wheel.
  • Step 5: Using a pair of pliers, remove the cotter pin under the lower ball joint, and then remove the castle nut using a 17mm socket.
  • My solution consisted of grabbing my hammer and pounding the side of it until it came loose.
  • Step 7: Using your 17mm box end wrench and 17mm ratchet, remove the wishbone or fork from the joint.

Using a soft tapping motion, carefully pry the axle end away from the hub.

It may be necessary to remove the splash guard in order to get access.

It took a few tries to get the axle out of the way.

Try twisting it as well, and then prying it off with your fingers.

You’ll know whether you’ve done it correctly when the axle is flush with the frame.

Don’t try to push it, however.

If yours does not, a modest quantity will enough.

I should have done this a lot sooner.

After I had placed the other end into the hub, I first aligned the lower ball joint and then reinserted it into its original position.

Following that, the procedure of removal is carried out in reverse!

(However, it is recommended that this item be tightened when the automobile is on the ground to avoid stressing the bushing) 2.Reinstall the nut on the lower ball joint and tighten it to the specified tension.

4.Reattach the wheel and lug nuts to the hub.

6.tighten the axle nut (I didn’t twist it, but I did apply an unusually large amount of force with the breaker bar) Use a pin punch or chisel to pound the nut into position.

Remove or Install Front or Rear Wheel – Generic Instructions

When removing and replacing a wheel on your car, always follow these general directions, but consult your owner’s handbook for more specific information. Always use the right equipment while raising your car, and only remove the vehicle off its jacking points one wheel at a time. If you are working on the opposite wheel from the one you are currently working on, use two wheel chokes on both sides of the wheel to prevent the car from rolling and falling off the jack while you are working on it.

You should never climb beneath the car if it is solely supported by the jack.

  • Never use an impact drill to remove wheel locking nuts or bolts
  • Instead, use a breaker bar to pry the nuts or bolts loose by hand. Do not leap or use your foot to break the breaker bar
  • Instead, use your hands. Removing debris, oil residues, and corrosion from the contact surfaces of the rim and wheel hub
  • Check that the brake disc holding bolt is securely fastened
  • Apply anti-seize paste to the wheel rim, ensuring that the paste is centered in the wheel rim
  • Clean the bolts or nuts on the wheels and inspect them for damage, replacing them if required. Wheel bolts that have deteriorated should be replaced. Attention! It is not recommended to use oil or grease on the wheel studs or bolts. The rim of the wheel must be flat against the brake disc in order for it to function properly. Using a crosswise sequence, screw in the wheel bolts or lug nuts and uniformly tighten them by hand in order to center the wheel rim
  • Using a calibrated torque wrench, tighten the wheel bolts or lug nuts in a transverse sequence to the prescribed tightening toque. To ensure consistency, inspect and tighten all wheel bolts or lug nuts in the same order. If required, retighten to the specified tightening tension. Use of pneumatic or electric screwdrivers to screw in and tighten the wheel bolts is not permitted under any circumstances.

Spindle Nut

Taking any of the bolts or nuts off for the first time is a pain in the neck.

A 36 MM nut was removed from the axle without a wince thanks to an Ingersoll Rand impact wrench that I purchased.

It was tight enough with my torque wrench, but I needed to tighten it some more, so I used my impact wrench on a low air setting to give it a couple more pops to get it even tighter.

Threads may be stripped with relative ease.
