Add a compass/auto-dim mirror to just about any car on the cheap; here’s how

I’m always browsing through car graveyards in search of low-cost additions that will improve my quality of life. A Hyundai Accent radiator fan repurposed into a highly effective solar-powered attic fan, or an agarage entertainment system constructed nearly entirely of vehicle components, might be the inspiration for this project. My most recent finding is that the inner rear-view mirrors in many 21st-century Subarus that are equipped with a compass and an auto-dimmer are self-contained components that do not require any external sensors of any kind, making them simple to adapt to other vehicles.

My primary vehicles are anEG Civic hatchback hooptie and a Coach Edition Lexus LS400 with Toyota Celsior badging (and a dog).

This is a real grandfather’s vehicle compass from the early 1900s.

  1. As everyone who has traveled with me knows, I am a complete and total noob when it comes to navigation.
  2. In spite of this, not everyone enjoys the rich feeling of hipster irony that can be found in antiquated items such as 8-track players and giant cumbersome vehicle compasses, and thus there is a place for a high-quality digital compass in our automobiles.
  3. There are many modern automobiles that come with compasses incorporated into the inner rear-view mirror, but most of those come with some sort of remote sensor that makes removal and installation a major nuisance.
  4. Murilee Martin is a young woman who lives in the United States.
  5. I was looking for one for my Civic (to supplement the analog compass, of course).
  6. To get the mirror off this totaled Outback, I drove over to Littleton U-Pull, which always has a large number of late-model Subarus on hand.
  7. It was tough to pry off the on-glass mirror mount, so I’ll just buy a replacement Subaru mount and attach it to the inside of my Civic’s windshield.

Because my previous attempts to pry off mirror mounts that were bonded to the glass were unsuccessful, I’ll just purchase a replacement mount, glue it to my windshield, and snap the mirror into place.

In my web investigation, I discovered that the blue wire is connected to the ignition power, the black wire is connected to the ground, and the green wire is grounded when the car is in reverse.

So, I’m not concerned about my mirror auto-dimming when backing into a 747 with the landing lights on, so I’m not going to pay attention to the green wire.

Success!

Using the charging port on theJunkyard Boogaloo Boombox as a power supply, I connected the mirror to 12 volts DC using test leads to complete the project.

It will be running on my Honda, which will shortly be outfitted with a multi-compass, any day now.

On August 25, 2019, a verified purchase was reviewed in the United States of America. Continue reading if you’re installing this to replace a conventional mirror on your 2019 XLT base Explorer. First and foremost, the mirror is attractive, and I doubt that most people will be able to detect that it is not stock. Second, if you are familiar with the color codes on the wiring of your map lights, installation is straightforward. I didn’t do it. O.o It took me a while to figure it out, but let’s just say that just because a wire is marked with green does not always imply that it is a ground.

  • 1) Insert a flat-head screwdriver at the base of the old mirror, where it meets the window frame and tighten.
  • If in doubt, look it up on the internet.
  • 2) Gently pull the sunglass/map light assembly down from the top.
  • Set the assembly aside for the time being.
  • This will be your playing field.
  • If you are using a screw with a minor diameter, use the drill bit with the minor diameter size for the screw size.
  • It is important to ensure that it is not the car’s roof.

I had around two inches on the ground.

That would be really detrimental.

7) Connect the yellow and green wires together with the red IDC clip.

9) Feed the wires through the gap in the hollow against the windscreen.

Alternatively, cut and splice.

12) Slide the mirror into position on the windshield and tighten the torx set screw using your fingers.

In front of the mirror, a green light should be illuminated.

It should be turned off.

Make certain that the lights are turned on.

On September 24, 2019, a review was conducted in the United States.

There is a rapid dimming option when needed, but it is not jarringly fast.

However, I have two major issues with the way the installation was done: 1) They are not equipped with a wire cover.

2.) The supplied wires are just a hair too short to reach the stereo head unit, which would be the most straightforward location for most people to locate a hot accessory wire to splice into.

On February 7, 2019, a customer in the United States reviewed the product.

Installation was quite simple.

Remove the windshield trim panel took me longer than it did to wire up the mirror itself, so I was a little disappointed.

First and foremost, there is the real product.

I’m hoping for the best in terms of the return.

This is well worth the money.

I reside in Brooklyn and go home on the BQE every night.

Installation.

Because I drive a 2000 Honda CRV, the OEM mirror attachment is located in the roof rather than the windshield.

First and foremost, get the three-pack of metal mounts.

It is difficult to attach on a glass surface.

AVOID epoxy adhesives, caulk, 5-minute adhesives, and the like when it comes to glue application.

You’re looking for UV Glue!

I’ve worked with museums in New York City and Calvin Klein Fashion Exhibits, so you can put your faith in me.

This is fantastic stuff; It has a shelf life of 18 months from the date of manufacture.

Don’t forget about the UV light source; amazon provides a variety of options; again, you’ll need glasses, or you can simply avoid staring at it directly.

Use any type of stripper, such as acetone, denatured alcohol, or rubbing alcohol, to clean the inside of the window and your mount.

It should be pressed against the window.

Examine the exterior to ensure that the glue has covered the whole region between the glass and the mount.

This thing isn’t going away until it’s hardened!

For me, the window adjustment control was the most accessible of the several controls.

Make a connection with the harness and feed it to the area underneath your steering wheel.

Do not utilize the splice connectors that they provide.

You may invest on this set, which will last you for a long time. Use the red butt crimps to secure your buttocks. Check the cables until you discover a source of 12 volts. There should only be one of them. Clip it, strip it, crimp it, and plug it back in. Done.

Has anyone ever added the Toyota auto dimming rearview mirror to their 4Runner?I noticed that one of the parts sites had the mirror on sale for 49.95 and I was curious how difficult it is._2003 4Runner V8 4×4 Sport

i saw the same sale and had the same question.Just looked at the ltd and the install doesn’t seem too bad. you will need to remove that portion of the headliner to plug in power. The kit seems pretty complete.Do not buy just the mirror itself, as you will be missing many required pieces.

I purchased the Autodimming mirror off brandsport.com (this is the mirror only – NO INTEGRATED COMPASS OR MAPLIGHTS) for $49.It came in a genuine Toyota parts box. easy two wire hookup. had to release the factory mirror off the bracket, slide on the new mirror and tighten the torx screw to hold it firmly in place.Thin two wire hookup runs up from mirror (plasticbracket included to hide wires that lead up to headliner) along the headliner and down the pillar under the dash.I hooked it up to accessory fuse and a ground point under the dash. Works great and looks totally factory.Installation took less than 30 minutes.Link:

Junior Member Thanks Toyotadude and Rando for the replies. I installed the mirror today (autodim + compass), and it went well. Actually, I poked around with a DVM and found switched power and ground on the connector going to the sunroof motor, so I didn’t have to route the wires down to the kickpanel and the “A9” point. Yes, I am lazy, and no, no fuses blown yet! But since the mirror draws relatively little current, I don’t think it should be a problem. We’ll see._MNTim2005 4WD V6 Sport (silver)
