BMW has issued a voluntary safety recall for the driver-side front air bag module. BMW AG is undertaking a Voluntary Safety Recall regarding the Driver-Side Front Air Bag Module on some BMW cars that are equipped with Takata PSDI-5 inflators that have not been desiccated, according to the company. For a similar issue, BMW issued safety recalls in the years 2013, 2014, and 2015. What makes this unique? Moreover, the inflators are distinct from each other. Takata PSDI-5 inflators are the subject of this recall action. A number of Takata inflators were recalled before, each with a unique model number.
- Yes.
- What makes you think this recall is comparable to other similar recalls that other manufacturers are currently carrying out?
- Takata’s PSDI-5 inflator is the subject of this recall effort.
- There are roughly 840,000 BMW automobiles in the United States that are subject to the recall.
- When reading “Vehicle Comments,” the date indicated only refers to the most recent time the comments were changed, not when they were first posted.
- Due to the fact that this recall only applies to cars equipped with the Takata PSDI-5 inflator, other models are not included in this list.
- At this point in time, Takata’s analysis suggests that exposure to specific environmental circumstances (such as several years of exposure to persistent conditions of high absolute humidity) may result in over-aggressive combustion in the event of an air bag deployment.
In an accident in which the air bag system is deployed, the air bag inflator housing may be damaged or completely destroyed.
What is the best method of finding out whether an issue exists in my vehicle?
Currently, there is no way to tell whether or not your BMW’s airbag inflator is at danger of failing during deployment if the airbags are deployed in an accident.
Yes.
Having air bags installed in your vehicle, even if it has air bags that are currently under recall, can save lives and prevent injuries.
When you get a letter from BMW requesting that you have this service performed by an authorized BMW shop, please schedule an appointment as soon as you can.
Was it decided what steps would be taken to correct the problem?
What led to BMW being aware of this problem.
Is BMW aware of any accidents or injuries involving BMW cars that have occurred as a result of this recall?
A burst inflator has not been discovered in any of the BMW cars included in this recall, according to the company.
The first letter informing you of the recall will be sent to you through First Class mail in March if your vehicle is affected by this action.
Will my BMW center disable my driver’s front air bag until it has been replaced by a replacement?
If you are involved in a car accident, it is far more probable that your air bag will function correctly and protect you than that it would burst and cause you injury.
As soon as you receive the final letter, you will be requested to schedule an appointment with an authorized BMW shop, which will place a pre-order for a new driver’s front air bag module in advance of your scheduled appointment.
This repair may take roughly two hours; however, depending on the scheduling of your BMW location, more time may be necessary to complete the job.
Are there any requirements that I must follow in order to receive servicing on my vehicle?
In order to guarantee that the essential parts, tools, and procedures are accessible to its authorized BMW shops prior to telling you to bring your car in for repair, BMW is in the process of putting this program in place.
It is probable that compensation will not be available in this specific recall since you would have replaced your driver’s front air bag module as a result of an accident in this case.
However, in the extremely improbable (but not impossible) case if you previously changed the driver’s front air bag module “out of pocket” after becoming aware of a potential fault, you may be eligible for a refund.
Please keep this letter for future reference.
– Beginning in the summer of 2016, BMW expects to receive a limited amount of repair components.
Final owner notification letters will be sent out via US First Class Mail to owners of the highest risk registered vehicles, which are the oldest models in the highest absolute humidity areas.
All owners of impacted cars will be contacted by First Class mail as soon as the availability of replacement components grows to a satisfactory level.
Fortunately, because the passenger’s front air bag does not contain a Takata PSDI-5 inflator, it is not subject to this recall.
In the event that replacement components are not available, BMW has allowed its centers to provide or assist clients with alternate transportation, subject to the availability of such transportation services.
No.
Sales that occur in violation of the stop-sale rule will not be covered by BMW North America.
No The deactivation of any air bag by a BMW dealer is permissible.
In the event that an owner wishes to trade in a BMW that has been subject to a safety recall, what should the dealership do?
Floorplan and depreciation help will be provided by BMW for these vehicles.
Additional details on these cars will be made accessible in the near future.
Yes.
A burst inflator has not been reported in any of the BMW cars involved in this recall, according to the company’s information.
Before the consumer recall letters are sent out, there will be some more information.
Yes.
Following existing criteria, customers may be provided the option of renting a car.
No.

4. I3 Recall
Every single I3 model that had ever been sold in North America was recalled in 2017. It was, understandably, a big issue. Because I3s were originally introduced in 2014, a total of four model years’ worth of vehicles, or a total of 30,000 vehicles, were affected by the recall in total. You don’t issue a recall like that just because a few consumers are dissatisfied with their GPS system, do you? When people’s lives are in risk, you do, however, emit a warning signal. According to Autowise, due of the seriousness of the situation, BMW has ordered a full halt to all sales on the line until the issue has been remedied.
Specifically, they discovered that anybody under the age of five who sat in the driver’s seat and did not buckle their seatbelt was at an elevated risk of neck injury as a result of this.
3. PCV Valve Heater Recall
A recall was issued for every single I3 model that has ever been sold in North America in 2017. Naturally, that was an important issue. Because I3s were originally introduced in 2014, a total of four model years’ worth of vehicles were impacted, for a total of 30,000 vehicles in total. You don’t just issue a recall because a few consumers are dissatisfied with their GPS device. When people’s lives are in risk, you do, however, send a bulletin. Following the severity of the problem, BMW put a total stop-sale on the line until the problem could be remedied, according to Autowise.
As a result of their findings, they concluded that anyone under five feet tall was at an elevated risk of neck injury if they sat in the driver’s seat without a seatbelt.
2. Coolant Leak Recall
From 2010 to 2017, 480,000 cars were involved in the coolant leak recall, which impacted four and six-cylinder diesel models from the years 2010 to 2017. It came to a close with 1.6 million. There was a leak in the exhaust gas recirculation module, which was the source of the problem. When a leak meets soot and high temperatures, it is possible that a fire would erupt, and this has happened. Even though just 30 diesel engines in Germany were confirmed to be defective, all possibly impacted cars were provided a free safety assessment simply to be safe in case the issue was discovered later on.
1. Takata Airbag Recall
Approximately 480,000 cars were included in the coolant leak recall that affected four- and six-cylinder diesel models from the years 2010 to 2017. 1.6 million people attended the finale. In this case, an exhaust gas recirculation module leak was the source of the issue.
There has been evidence of flames occurring when a leak is combined with soot and high temperatures. Even though just 30 diesel engines in Germany were confirmed to be defective, all possibly impacted cars were provided a free safety assessment simply to be safe in case the problem recurred.

Major BMW Recall: Fire and Airbag Risks
There are many major recalls that may affect your BMW coupe or SUV if it was made between 2000 and 2015, and the premium manufacturer wants you to be aware of them so that you can protect yourself and your vehicle.
Fire Hazards
BMW issued two back-to-back safety alerts in the autumn for around 1 million of its cars that were at danger of catching fire, even while the vehicles were not in use. More than 670,000 BMW 3 Series vehicles produced between 2006 and 2011 were included in the initial notification. According to BMW, an issue with the temperature control systems in these vehicles has been reported to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, with the wiring and electrical conductors being particularly susceptible to overheating.
The2ndSafety Notice
One of the most significant aspects of the second safety notice is that it applies to more than 740,000 vehicles (including some that were previously involved in the first recall), all of which have a defective interior heater that is prone to short-circuiting, resulting in the melting of the components of the crankcase ventilation system. Particularly troubling given that this ventilation system is intended to assist the gases from the internal combustion engine in exiting through the exhaust valves.
Faulty Airbags
Additionally, BMW has issued a number of recalls in recent months owing to Takata airbags that were found to be defective. BMW has created an educational webpage where drivers can learn more about the recall and what they can do if their vehicles are impacted. The problem is so pervasive that it affects approximately 2 million BMW vehicles from model years 2000 to 2015. BMW is recalling the following models: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
- Model years 2008-2013 for the 1 Series
- Model years 2000-2013 for the 3 Series
- Model years 2001-2003 for the 5 Series
- Model years 2013-2015 for the X1
- Model years 2007-2010 for the X3
- Model years 2001-2004 and 2007-2013 for the X5
- Model years 2008-2014 for the X6
The problem is that the chemical propellant in the Takata airbags may deteriorate over time, and some of these airbags have ruptured during collisions, allowing metal fragments to pass through the airbag cushion material and cause injury or death to vehicle occupants.
Takata airbags are manufactured by Takata Corporation.
DefectsDue toWeather
Several states have issued high alerts for this airbag recall because temperature and humidity play a factor in how quickly the chemical propellant degrades. The following states are considered to be the most conducive to propellant breakdown:
- Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas are among the states represented.
Other states that are on a moderate level of alert as a result of the weather they are experiencing include:
- Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are some of the states with which we share borders.
Keep in mind that there is no reliable technique to determine whether or not this problem occurs in your vehicle. In order to comply with the recall, BMW has recommended that drivers of any and all vehicles named on the list have their airbags replaced as soon as feasible.
Take Action
It is recommended that you register your car for free on BMW’s website if your vehicle has been impacted by this recall. When you provide this information, BMW will be able to alert you when replacement parts for your vehicle become available. Because of the large number of cars affected by this recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has established a priority plan for issuing replacement components, starting with the oldest affected vehicles in the states with the highest alert rating.

Can I remove air bags if they are recalled, but can’t be replaced?
My BMW 325i was purchased in 2005. Earlier this year, I received a letter from my dealer informing me that the air bag canister on the driver’s side needed to be replaced. Prior to this, the one on the passenger’s side had been repaired and reinstalled. My dealer informed me in the spring of this year that they still did not have new components. My fear about the possibility of a fatal car accident arises every time I step behind the wheel of my vehicle. Ludo is a fictional character created by author Ludo In an accident, the Takata air bags have the potential to cause serious injury or death because they might open with too much force and spew metal fragments throughout the vehicle’s cabin.
A spokesperson for the Automobile Protection Association stated that none of those accidents included a BMW, and that there have been no documented deaths or injuries in Canada.
If a chemical is exposed to heat and humidity for an extended period of time, it may burn excessively quickly.
It does not protect side air bags if the desiccant is not present.
On the Transport Canada website, it states that “the danger to Canadians is modest because the condition is associated with prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperatures.” To have the airbags deactivated in Canada, owners must submit a request to Transport Canada, which may or may not be approved under certain circumstances.
According to all three, the risk posed by the Takata air bags in Canada is quite minimal.
In an e-mail, Tranport Canada spokeswoman Roxane Marchand stated that, “while the department does operate an airbag deactivation program, airbag deactivation is very rarely used and only intended for use in extremely rare cases —for those with certain medical conditions and seeking airbag deactivation under the advice of a medical professional.” “When used in conjunction, seat belts and airbags help keep car occupants safe.
- The use of seatbelts without the use of an airbag can put an occupant’s safety at risk.
- Air bags are not needed to be deactivated by mechanics, even if you have authorization to have them removed, according to Transport Canada’s website.
- The message has been sent to you.
- Transport Canada has stated that you will receive a letter in the mail once it is complete.
- Another recall of more than 104,151 cars with the same problem was issued by Transport Canada earlier this year.
In a statement, Raynald Marchand, general manager, programs at the Canada Safety Council, said, “I’m sure the BMW dealer would love to exchange this guy’s second air bag, but he doesn’t have it – and this is a major recall.” In this situation, Takata has a large number of bags to create, and there is a significant back order – so I’d just have it removed until they get the new one,” he said, adding that the dealer may put in the new one whenever it becomes available.
Is it, however, safe to drive without an air bag in place?
“Under Transport Canada standards, automobiles in Canada are expected to satisfy the safety criteria even if they do not have an air bag,” he explained.
The company, however, will not allow its dealers to deactivate air bags, and consumers are advised to leave air bags in place until replacements are available, according to BMW spokesperson Rob Dexter.
“There have been no incidences in Canada,” says the spokesperson.
“We’re battling for our portion of the pie – we don’t have a certain deadline at this moment,” he explained.
When does a recall become effective?
However, if your car is recalled, it is your responsibility to take your vehicle to a dealer to get the fault rectified – once a remedy is actually available for your vehicle.
Last month, actor Anton Yelchin was murdered after his recalled 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee collided with him on the street.
“After a number of fatalities and injuries, the shift lever design and gear position placement were standardized in the 1960s,” Iny explained.
However, a recall does not imply that the problem will be resolved immediately.
As stated in a letter to dealers dated May 24, Fiat Chrysler stated that the software upgrades necessary to correct the problem will be available no later than July or August.
“The Motor Vehicle Safety Actrequires the auto manufacturer to produce progress reports stating the proportion of vehicles fixed for eight quarters,” Iny said.
While corporations are required to submit progress reports, Transport Canada does not have the authority to punish enterprises whose rectification rates are low.
Companies who fail to remedy safety flaws would be subject to fines under the Strengthening Motor Vehicle Safety for Canadians Act, according to Transport Canada.
Rather of sending alerts to the current address of the current owner, “some automobile manufacturers are cheap and comply by sending notices to the latest address on their database,” Iny explained.
If you’ve relocated, or if you’ve purchased the automobile from someone else, it’s likely that you won’t be on the mailing list anymore.” It will be sent to the previous owner or to your previous address, and it will end up in the circular file “Raynald Marchand expressed himself.
It’s also possible to go to several manufacturer’s websites and search for recalls using your vehicle identifying number (VIN).
According to Raynald Marchand, if you take your car to the dealer for servicing, the dealership will be aware of any recalls that apply to your vehicle. Take a peek at the new Drive area we’ve created for you.
