Faulty Takata airbags possessed inflators that were susceptible to degradation after prolonged exposure to humidity, allowing them to deploy in instances where they were not needed and eject metal shards into the air. Ford is adamant that the most recent set of its impacted vehicles has airbags that work in a different manner and so should not be included in the continuing recall process.

“Ford thinks that its exhaustive analysis suggests that a driver-side airbag safety recall is not needed,” the company stated.

The petition was refused by the NHTSA, and Ford is pushing on with the recall of 2.6 million vehicles in the United States. Manufacturers will replace the driver-side front airbag inflator or airbag module at no additional charge. The following is a list of the most recent automobile recalls:

As of April 1, Ford said it would begin contacting owners of their vehicles.

Use your VIN to check for recalls
