Ford Motor Company Provides Details on Two Safety Recalls in North America
DEARBORN, Mich., March 12, 2021–Dearborn, Mich., March 12, 2021– Ford Motor Company disclosed today the specifics of two safety recalls in the United States and Canada. In compliance with the NHTSA’s denial of Ford’s petition, Ford is moving through with a previously announced safety recall for a number of cars equipped with certain Takata driver-side front airbag inflators. The driver-side front airbag inflators in the affected cars were fitted as original equipment and include a calcium sulfate desiccant, according to the manufacturer.

Takata airbag problems go back to before November 2014

When the New York Times published an article claiming that Takata was aware of flaws years before the corporation filed paperwork with the United States Federal Government, it was a watershed moment. Later that month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a nationwide recall for Takata airbags.
To avoid going bankrupt, Takata filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2017 after pleading guilty in February to misled manufacturers about the safety of its airbags and other components.

Its principal function was to ensure that vehicle safety regulations were adhered to. Setting up those standards and then expanding them as necessary was a secondary function of the organization. Lincoln and Ford SUVs are being recalled as part of a related recall, which I discuss here. Early FMVSS Regulations Are Modest The agency’s responsibility in this capacity was to serve as the custodian of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Ford to recall 3 million vehicles equipped with defective airbags after losing fight with NHTSA
