Two nearby garages and one toy store all agreed that I needed a new compressor. A slew of diagnoses resulted in the same tentative conclusion. I tried replacing the compressor myself, but to no avail. I eventually found out that when I had my dash apart earlier, I hadn’t completely reconnected the a/c button plug! I was very frustrated! First, have a look at the straightforward crap! Separately, I have a perfectly functional air conditioning compressor off of a 4.0L Toyota Tundra for sale at a low price.

He charged some gas into the circuit and tested for gas out of the drain line with a sensor, which sounded when it was close to the drain line. The second diagnostic came from a local auto air conditioning shop. A quote for $1,130.00 was provided. In response to the gentleman’s request for $395.00 for the evaporator (OEM), I phoned my local dealer, who offered a list price of $260.00, which included my discounts, for the evaporator. Since he owns a shop, I’m sure he can get it for less, but this guy wants to rip me off for $265.00 on that item alone, $125.00 for the expansion valve (which I’ll have to get from a friend at the dealer, but someone told me it would be around $60.00), $10.00 for an Oring kit, $15.00 for the oil, and $65.00 for charging the system, among other things. The icing on the cake was that he demanded $520.00 in labor! The next step would be to obtain a second estimate from a different technician whom I do not know, simply to make sure the diagnosis was correct, and then a third quotation from a recommended technician who provides competitive pricing to my father in law. Finally, a neighbor who works with mini-splits offered to install the components for free if I purchased them from him
- However, he requested that we first verify that we had the exact diagnosis, which is why we obtained three quotes. I’m most likely going to acquire the components through my local dealer, who has always provided me with competitive rates on OEM parts. I’ll keep you informed as events unfold. I’m assuming he charged you somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred bucks for checking out the system. That is the standard rate in my neighborhood. If you’re going to obtain another diagnostic, I’d recommend going via the dealer. After that, you may purchase all of the necessary parts, including oil and Freon, and have your neighbor install them.

Usually, if anything is going to fail, it is the condenser, which is caused by road debris. In 2004, I purchased a brand new RSX, which was damaged by a rock on the third day of ownership. The evaporator, on the other hand, is located under the dashboard and is more difficult to replace than the condenser. Installing A/C parts isn’t difficult if you’re patient, but most people don’t have a vacuum pump or manifold established to correctly evacuate and charge them once they’ve been installed. Prior to purchasing my own system, I used to complete all of the work and then transport the car to a location that provided free A/C inspections. If it passed, I would order them to charge it

My understanding is that this is the case, and I am not claiming it to be reality. It’s difficult for me to fathom why there is a leak in the evaporator. Even if the coil itself is leaking, I’m not sure why replacing the txv would be necessary. Also, use caution while dealing with your neighbor. The air conditioner compressor will not turn on, there is no clicking or anything, and the green light illuminates the button when it is turned on and orange when it is turned off.

- I’d want to check the relays, but I’m not sure how to go about it.
