- Fuel trims and Equinox P0171 or Terrain P0171 trouble code A P0171 FUEL METERING TOO LEAN code can mean the engine is getting too much unmetered air or too little fuel. So you want to see if the PCM is trying to add fuel.
How do I fix my P0171 code?
What repairs can fix the P0171 code?
- Replacing the fuel pump.
- Replacing the fuel filter.
- Replacing the fuel pressure regulator.
- Replacing the powertrain control module.
- Replacing one or more injectors.
- Replacing one or more oxygen sensors.
- Replacing the mass air flow sensor.
- Repairing a vacuum leak.
What is a P0171 code for a chevy?
What Does P0171 Mean For Your Chevrolet? Combustion engines run most efficiently when they maintain an air-fuel mixture ratio of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel. When there are more than 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel in the air-fuel mixture, a lean condition exists and code P0171 is triggered.
What does code P0171 mean?
The P0171 code means that, on the first bank of the engine, the fuel system is running weak or a vacuum leak exists near this side of the engine. A lean condition occurs when the engine either receives too little fuel or too much air.
How much does it cost to fix a P0171 code?
What is the cost to resolve a P0171 code? This code will require a diagnostic check, which will run about $100 depending on the time it takes to find the issue. As there is a laundry list of reasons why the engine runs lean, the average price per repair will vary greatly.
Is it OK to drive with P0171 code?
It is okay to drive a vehicle with P0171 for a short period of time, but driving with this code for an extended period of time can overheat the engine and cause internal engine damage.
What causes P0171 and P0174 codes Chevy?
A P0171 or P0174 trouble code can happen because of a vacuum leak or faulty sensor. Vacuum leak faults usually—not always—manifest more readily at lower speeds; as a rough idle, for example. A capable scan tool can check fuel trim values at idle and at higher engine speeds and detect when the lean condition occurs.
Can a dirty air filter cause a P0171 code?
If the filter is clogged or excessively dirty, this is enough to impede or restrict the air flow, hence resulting in a lean running condition. Besides a dirty air filter, the P0171 code can also be blamed on a dirty or faulty MAF sensor and a clogged fuel filter.
Can bad spark plugs cause P0171?
Not likely. A P0171 ( too lean, Bank 1 ) code is most often caused by a vacuum leak downstream from the MAF sensor or a malfunctioning MAF sensor. Bad spark plugs could actually cause the opposite code ( too rich, bank 1).
Can a vacuum leak cause O2 sensor code?
The real problem may not be a bad O2 sensor, but possibly be an engine vacuum leak, low fuel pressure or dirty fuel injectors that are causing the engine run lean. An engine misfire, leaky exhaust valve or a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket that allows air into the exhaust may also cause this type of code to be set.
How do you fix lean air/fuel mixture?
Vacuum leak: Vacuum leaks can cause a lean fuel mixture. Inspecting and replacing damaged vacuum lines with good hoses and clamps can solve a lean problem. Clogged fuel filter: clogged fuel filters will limit the amount of fuel requires by the engine.
Can an exhaust leak cause a P0171 code?
An exhaust leak upstream of the O2 is kind of unlikely to cause a p0171, as it would have to be siphoning ‘clean’ air in via venturi effect. A head gasket leak or cracked head will allow the coolant to be burned.
What does Bank 2 too lean mean?
Overview. Error code P0174 is described as System Too Lean (Bank 2). This means there is incorrect ratio of air and fuel on the car’s engine system, specifically on Bank 2 of the Cylinder. “Too Lean” means there is too much oxygen in the exhaust.

Fuel trims and Equinox P0171 or Terrain P0171 trouble code
An error code of P0171 FUEL METERING TOO LEAN might indicate that the engine is receiving either too much unmetered air or not enough fuel. As a result, you want to know if the PCM is attempting to inject fuel. Refer to the short- and long-term fuel trim data on your scan tool for more information. Short-term fuel trims should change depending on how you drive the car. Chevrolet claims that the usual short-term fuel trims range between +10 and -10 percentage points, with zero percentage points being the best reading.
It is also recommended that normal long-term fuelvalues be in the range of 10% to 10%, with 0% serving as the ideal measurement.
Low fuel pressure or volume, a clogged fuel filter, or blocked injectors are all possible causes of low fuel pressure or volume.
Check air intake
Replacement air filters, replacement air intakes, and replacement exhaust systems are available aftermarket. A mass airflow sensor (MAF) measures the volume and density of air entering the engine. Excessive air entering the engine can significantly alter MAF sensor readings, resulting in an Equinox P0171 or Terrain P0171 fault code. So first and foremost, check the air filter. After that, look at the reading from the MAF sensor. Check the reference, ground, and signal connections. A signal that is highly irregular might be indicative of a defective MAF sensor.
If the air intake and MAF both pass muster, the next step is to check the fuel.
Check for intake manifold leaks and leaking vacuum lines
Unmetered air is any air that enters the engine after the MAF system has been activated. Unmetered air can enter the engine by a disconnected vacuum line, a leaky intake manifold gasket, or a warped intake manifold (intake manifolds are made of plastic and can warp). Examine all of the vacuum line connections. Intake Manifold for the Equinox/Terrain In order to monitor the Oxygen sensor readings while doing the propane enrichment test, connect your scan tool or scope. Make little additions of propane fuel around the intake manifold with a propane torch, taking care to avoid igniting it.
If the oxygen levels begin to rise, you have discovered an air leak.
Check fuel pressure and delivery
With the engine running and during a test drive, attach a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure while the engine is running. If the fuel pump provides the appropriate amount of gasoline in the suitable volume,
If nothing else solves the problem, clean the fuel injectors.
One of the other possible causes of an Equinox P0171 or Terrain P0171 issue code is a malfunctioning EGR valve that is allowing either exhaust or ambient air to enter the engine while running.

P0171 Chevy Equinox OBDII Code Meaning and Diagnosis
The P0171 error code is one of the most often seen when driving a Chevrolet Equinox. This code number refers to a number that you will be issued when you put your automobile into an OBDII scanner for the first time. P0171: Lean Bank 1 of the Fuel Trim System.
Equinox P0171 Code Defined
P0171 is a problem code generated by the OBDII system. Technically, the code is comprised of the following letters: Lean Bank for the Fuel Trim System 1 When the oxygen sensors detect that there is not enough oxygen in the exhaust system, the code is generated and displayed. This is referred to as a ‘lean’ condition in most circles nowadays. The electronic control module (ECM) of the car will add extra fuel to the mixture in order to get the air fuel combination to the proper temperature for optimum combustion.
Equinox P0171 Code Symptoms
When the fuel injection system on a Chevrolet Equinox is not functioning properly, the P0171 error will frequently be issued. Most of the time, a lean state in the engine will cause the code to be executed. P0171 is not normally related with any drivability concerns, although it can be. For the vast majority of individuals, the appearance of the service engine soon light is the first indication that anything is amiss. When you have code P0171, the following are the common signs that indicate that something is wrong.
- When the fuel injection system of a Chevrolet Equinox is not functioning properly, the P0171 error will be issued. Most of the time, a lean situation in the engine will cause the code to be activated. The P0171 code is not normally related with any drivability difficulties. If anything is amiss with your vehicle, the service engine soon light will most likely be the first warning that something is wrong. While having code P0171, the following are the common signs that indicate something is wrong:
Top Chevy Equinox P0171 Causes
There are a variety of factors that might contribute to the P0171 problem code on the Chevrolet Equinox. The following are the most often encountered.
- Leaks in the vacuum system – One of the most prevalent reasons for the P0171 code to appear in the Chevrolet Equinox’s computer is a vacuum leak. Take a look around to see if you can locate the source of the vacuum leak. Listed below is a fantastic YouTube video on how to locate a vacuum leak
- Oxygen Sensor – The P0171 code is generated when the oxygen sensor(s) in the exhaust system does not detect enough oxygen in the exhaust system. When the oxygen sensor is malfunctioning, it might result in an erroneous reading and the occurrence of the code. The computer will still make adjustments to the air/fuel combination to compensate for the loss of pressure. The Equinox will get too rich as a result of this. In the engine, the mass air flow sensor estimates the amount of oxygen that is being drawn in through the intake. If it has failed, the air-fuel mixture will be incorrect, and the P0171 error code will appear. Unhealthy Fuel Injectors – If you have one or more fuel injectors that are no longer working properly, this will almost surely result in the air/fuel combination being unhealthy. A high level of fuel pressure is required for today’s sophisticated fuel-injected motors in order to adequately atomize the gas. Fuel pump/fuel filter If the fuel pressure is not as high as it should be, atomization will not occur effectively, and the appropriate air/fuel combination will not be obtained. Air Filter – While it is not the most prevalent reason for the P0171 code to be shown, a blocked air filter can certainly result in the code being displayed. In addition, because it’s so simple to do so, why not do so?
Hopefully, you will be able to determine what is wrong with your Equinox. Please feel free to comment or mail if you see any inaccuracies or anything else that you believe may be improved upon in the post. Thank you very much.
P0171 – Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, & Fixes
Bank 1 either contains an excessive amount of air or an insufficient amount of fuel.
What Does P0171 Mean?
Combustion engines operate most efficiently when the air-to-fuel mixture ratio is maintained at 14.7 parts air to one part fuel. There is a lean state present when there is more than 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel in the air-fuel combination, and the code P0171 is activated. In addition to vacuum leaks, which bring more air into the air-fuel mixture, a weak fuel system, which does not inject enough fuel into the air-fuel combination, can result in a lean situation as a result of a weak fuel system.
When the magnitude of these modifications exceeds a certain threshold, code P0171 is triggered.
What Are The Symptoms Of P0171?
- Check Engine The engine is not producing enough power
- The engine is making a rough idle
- The engine is coughing
- The engine is misfiring.
What Is The Cause Of P0171?
- Clean or malfunctioning mass airflow sensor
- PCV hoses, vacuum hoses, and the intake manifold gasket all have vacuum leaks. Fuel pump that is not working properly
- Fuel injectors that are clogged or filthy
- Fuel filter that has become clogged
- Leak in the exhaust system
- Faulty oxygen sensor
- Faulty air-fuel ratio sensor
- Faulty oxygen sensor
How Serious Is Code P0171? – Moderate
Driving a vehicle with the P0171 code for a short amount of time is OK; however, driving a vehicle with this code for a longer period of time might cause the engine to overheat and cause internal engine damage.
Code P0171 Common Diagnosis Mistakes
When diagnosing P0171, it is critical that the full diagnostic process be completed in its entirety. Despite the fact that many individuals immediately replace the air-fuel sensor or oxygen sensor when they receive a wrong reading, the fundamental reason is frequently a filthy or malfunctioning mass airflow sensor or vacuum leak, which causes the O2 or A/F sensor to read differently in order to adjust for the problem.
The ability to read and analyze gasoline trims as well as freeze frame data is essential for correctly diagnosing P0171.
Tools Needed To Diagnosis P0171
- You Might Require the Following Tools: (FIXD’s top-recommended Amazon selections are as follows:
- In addition to FIXD ($59.99), Mass Air Flow Cleaner ($11.31), Fuel Pressure Testing Gauge ($25.99), and Hayne’s Repair Manual ($19-$25), there are several more items to consider.
How To Diagnosis Code P0171
Diagnose and repair are difficult — 3 out of 5 on the difficulty scale.
- P0171 is the only code that should be present, therefore scan your car using FIXD to confirm. If there are any additional codes present, they must be dealt with first. Check for leaks in any vacuum lines and hoses, and double-check that they are all securely linked together. While driving, you will hear a hissing sound that indicates the presence of a leak. However, it may be difficult to detect while the engine is running. Look out this comprehensive guide to discovering and correcting vacuum leaks if you believe you have one but are having difficulty locating it
- After reconnecting any disconnected vacuum lines and replacing any broken vacuum lines that are leaking, use FIXD to delete the check engine light code P0171 from the vehicle’s computer. Once again, if the check engine light (code P0171) illuminates, check for leaks in the remaining vacuum lines before continuing with the rest of the diagnostic procedure. Remove the mass airflow sensor and clean it with a mass airflow cleaner or a contact cleaner before reinstalling it. Using FIXD, reinstall the mass airflow sensor and reset the check engine light on the vehicle. The diagnostic process should be repeated if the check engine light comes back on and displays code P0171. If you have determined that there are no vacuum leaks, that your mass airflow sensor is clean, and that your fuel system is operating correctly, check the exhaust for leaks before checking the Air Fuel Ratio Sensors or the Oxygen Sensors
- If you discover any leaks, get them fixed. You may want to investigate changing your A/F sensor or O2 sensors at this stage if the code still persists beyond this point.
Estimated Cost of Repair
If you receive error code P0171, one or more of the fixes listed below may be required to resolve the underlying problem. The estimated cost of repair for each feasible repair includes the cost of the essential components as well as the cost of the labor required to complete the repair, if any.
- Clean the MAF for $100
- Replace the MAF for $300
- Fuel Pump $1300-$1700
- Fuel pressure regulator $200-$400
- Exhaust repair $100-$200 (if welded to repair)

Chevy Equinox Check Engine Light Code P0171 Lean
My check engine light turned on a few days after I had my oil changed, and I couldn’t figure out why. It was at Autozone that I had the computer scanned for codes, and the results came back as p0171 lean and P0496 evap system purge or something like that. What are some of the most typical reasons for this? Chevy Equinox, model year 2005. P0171 and P0496 are the check engine lights to look for. Prior repairs resulted in the need for an oil change. At Autozone, I had the codes scanned for me. Answer:On this car, the code p0171 is a frequent code that causes the check engine light to illuminate following an oil change.
- From the air intake duct on the air filter housing, this tube travels to the rear valve cover, which is located under the ignition coil / module.
- It is stated as ‘Evaporative emission system purge during non-purge event’ in the P0496 log (EVAP) Most of the time, this is caused by a malfunctioning purge solenoid.
- Problem with the airbag Chevrolet Equinox, model year 2005.
- My Chevrolet Equinox’s airbag sensor is illuminated.
- Please inform me where this sensor is located in my car so that I may replace it myself.
- Also, because this sensor costs 450$, do I have to purchase it directly from General Motors?
- Answer: Underneath the top radiator support, on the underside of the front end impact sensor may be found.
It is held in place by a single TORX screw.
Not sure how the hose connection is fastened on, but it may be a clip.
It’s important to note that nothing is holding the EVAP tube in place.
However, when it was moved, as previously mentioned, it became unattached.
Evap, oxygen sensor, and exhaust gas recirculation system All of them have the Not Ready reading.
I’ve spoken with a number of dealers, all of whom recommend further driving.
These tests must be done under extremely particular conditions in order to be effective.
Set a timer for 10 minutes on the highway, then get off and wait at a complete stop for several minutes, then turn the car off and repeat the process.
This does not necessarily imply that the check engine light is illuminated.
Is the code P0455 related to the sensor on top of the gas tank?
Code P0455 indicates a significant EVAP system leak. There are a variety of factors that might be causing this. A gas cap that is loose or not sealing properly, a poor vent valve, a damaged line, or a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor are all examples of problems (that is on top of the tank).
P015A O2 Sensor Delayed Response
Article written byStephen DarbyASE Certified TechnicianO2 Sensor Delayed Response – From Rich to Lean ASE Certified Technician (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
What does that mean?
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a general powertrain code, which means that it applies to any cars that are equipped with the OBD-II diagnostic system (GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, VW, Toyota, Honda, etc.). Despite the fact that they are general, the particular repair processes may differ based on the make and model. When a P015A code is stored in an OBD-II equipped vehicle, it indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a delayed response time from the upstream oxygen (O2) sensor or circuit for engine bank one (the first one after the exhaust leaves the engine and before the catalytic converter).
- Automotive O2 / oxygen sensors are manufactured from a zirconium dioxide detecting element that is shielded by a steel enclosure that has been carefully engineered to allow for ventilation.
- In accordance with the proportion of oxygen particles in the engine exhaust compared to the percentage of oxygen particles in the ambient air, an electrical signal is sent to the PCM by the engine.
- A tiny chamber in the center of the O2 sensor is filled with ambient air pulled by wire lead cavities and confined in a small chamber in the center of the sensor.
- Exhaust heats the confined ambient air (in the chamber), causing the oxygen ions to create voltage (and hence (energy) voltage.
- It is possible to see fluctuations in voltage due to the rapid movement of oxygen ions between platinum electrodes’ different layers.
- A low voltage signal from the O2 sensor indicates that there is more oxygen in the exhaust (a lean state), whereas a high voltage signal indicates that there is less oxygen in the exhaust (a rich situation) (rich condition).
- A P015A code will be saved and a malfunction indication lamp may be lit if the O2 sensor in question fails to cycle as quickly and/or regularly as expected over a certain length of time and under certain predetermined circumstances.
There are a number of other oxygen sensor delayed response error codes to look out for, including:
- The following sensors have delayed responses: P013EO2 Sensor Delayed Response – Rich to Lean (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
- P013FO2 Sensor Delayed Response – Lean to Rich (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
- P014AO2 Sensor Delayed Response – Rich to Lean (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
- P014BO2 Sensor Delayed Response – Lean to Rich (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
- P015BO2 Sensor Delayed Response – Rich to Lean (Bank
Code SeveritySymptoms
It should be considered serious since a P015A code indicates that an oxygen sensor has been sluggish or unresponsive for a prolonged length of time. The following are possible symptoms of this code:
- Fuel economy has been reduced. Engine performance is generally lacking
- Other diagnostic issue codes that are connected to the current one may also be kept. The service engine soon bulb will be illuminated.
Causes
The following are examples of possible circumstances for this code to be set:
- Burned, damaged, or disconnected wiring and/or connections
- A faulty catalytic converter
- And other issues are all possible. Exhaust spills from the engine
Diagnostic and Repair Procedures
To diagnose a code P015A, I would need many instruments, the most important of which are a diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), and access to a trustworthy vehicle information source (All Data DIY). Before attempting to diagnose and repair a code P015A, it is necessary to diagnose and fix all other engine misfire codes, throttle position sensor codes, manifold air pressure codes, and mass air flow sensor codes. When an engine is not operating efficiently, it will cause a plethora of codes to be saved (and rightly so).
- Harnesses that are routed near hot exhaust pipes and manifolds, as well as those that are routed near sharp edges, such as those found on exhaust shields, are the subject of our investigation.
- If you locate one that corresponds to the symptoms and/or code(s) displayed by the car in question, it will almost certainly assist you in your diagnostic process.
- I next prefer to connect the scanner to the car diagnostic connection and collect all of the problem codes and freeze frame data that have been saved in the vehicle.
- Clear the codes and check to see if the P015A has been reset.
- Observe the O2 sensor input data by using the scanner data stream as a source.
- If the engine is operating efficiently, the data from the upstream oxygen sensor should oscillate consistently between one millivolt (.100-volts) and nine millivolts (.090-volts) (.900-olts).
- To examine real-time data from the oxygen sensor, you may connect the DVOM test leads to both the sensor ground and signal wires on the sensor.
- In order to avoid control module damage, disconnect any associated controllers prior to performing a DVOM circuit resistance test on the system.
- The downstream O2 sensors should not cycle as frequently as the upstream O2 sensors once the PCM has been configured for closed loop operation. The use of low-grade replacement (or remanufactured) catalytic converters should be avoided since they are prone to breakdown on several occasions.
