I apologize in advance for my naivete, since I am completely new to the world of automobile repair. I recently purchased a 1991 Ford Ranger, and when I start it, it lurches forward by a large amount. It also happens from time to time to entirely or almost completely cut out.

Thanks to earlier advise on these sites, I concluded it was possible that it was the MAF.

I cleaned it (with MAF cleaner) and reinstalled it, and it began to suck once again.

I put one in, and it ran much worse than it did before.

I went to the auto yard and removed another MAF, then went home and cleaned it before putting it back in the vehicle.

When this occurs, I have found that turning off the vehicle and restarting it typically brings it to a halt—at least for a short period of time.

What if I made a mistake at the junk yard and pulled another nasty one on them?

Can somebody tell me whether this is linked to something else?

Is it possible that this is the source of the problem?

Make sure the MAF and everything else is connected and that any previous codes have been cleared before driving and triggering a “genuine” DTC. If you don’t do this, you’re inviting a poor diagnosis, lost effort, and so on.
