What is a junction block?

The JB is involved in the majority of the circuits that you identify as experiencing issues with.

The horn relay is the second one up from the bottom of the photo, as seen in the illustration.

If you notice any signs of corrosion, you should remove the whole JB and examine the rear of it for damage.

To remove the JB cover, first pop the fuse access panel out of the way, then undo the plastic floor trim that holds the cover in place, and then unfasten and remove the cover.

Simply ensure that both the positive and negative battery wires are disconnected before replacing the JB.

Protocol for using a battery cable: Remove the (-) battery cable first, followed by the (+) battery cable.

The following is the Junction Block R R procedure: REMOVAL (1) Disconnect and disconnect both the negative and positive wires from the battery.

(3) Remove the push nut that holds the inner trim panel on the right cowl side of the vehicle to the junction block stud.

(8) Disconnect all of the wire harness connectors from the connector receptacles on the junction block, including the ground wire harness connector.

I felt like a complete moron for not being able to figure things out.

The short version is that he changed the negative battery cable and declared the problem resolved.

I believe the fact that I found it out rubbed him the wrong way a little.

I’ll start with when I believe the problem began to manifest itself.

While doing so, I noticed that the three-wire plug for the dome light under the driver’s side kickpanel had come unplugged, so I plugged it back in and everything appeared to be working properly, including the dome light.

The rear defroster was depleting the battery and the 3 wire connector I plugged back in was undone for some reason, which I discovered after closing the driver side door and opening it.

Horn Honks When Door Is Opened

It is this circuit control board, which is situated on the bottom of the TIPM fuse and relay box, that is responsible for the majority, if not all, of the Jeep Rubicon’s electrical switching operations. Julius Caesar conquered the Roman Empire by crossing the Rubicon River in Northern Italy in the year 49 B.C., establishing himself as the first Emperor of the Roman Empire. For Caesar, crossing the Rubicon marked the point beyond which he could no longer turn, because it would either result in victory for himself or death at the hands of his adversaries.

  1. It wasn’t until four years later that I was involved in a strange and pricey electrical switching system known as the Total Integrated Power Module (TIPM), or (IPM) as it’s referred to in service documentation.
  2. Working well past the point of no return, I uncovered a complicated system with a distinct operating strategy that I had never seen before.

  4. The call came in from a small-fleet diesel technician who also receives his fair share of personal car troubles from his company owners.
  5. It was my initial reaction to criticize the unusual TIPM fuse and relay box arrangement, which I had never seen before.

Even further, manually turning on the inside illumination would also trigger the horn, bringing the total to three.

In order to validate or disprove this notion, we removed the TIPM cover and found no charred or cracked regions on the TIPM’s circuit boards, nor any signs of water penetration on the TIPM.

Transmission and reception of digital signals sent at varied communication rates allow CAN bus systems to communicate data across several modules at the same time.

In order to retrieve its own ‘coded’ messages from this common data highway, each module is written differently.

With CAN, any integrated switch just instructs modules such as the ECM or BCM to do certain switching functions such as turning the engine or blaring the horn, rather than performing those operations themselves.

Other modules may be able to turn solenoids, motors, and other accessories on and off by activating or deactivating relays in conjunction with one another.

As a result, CAN bus technology is currently used as the foundation of modern automobile propulsion systems’ electrical design.

The message ‘Horn Switch Stuck Active’ indicates that the code B2339 is a hard code that will continue to repeat even after it has been deleted.

Most professional scan tools now poll all onboard modules to not only indicate the codes contained in each module’s diagnostic memory, but also to confirm that all modules are interacting with one another.

Our vehicle’s Cab Compartment Node (CCN) returned a B2339 code, indicating that the horn switch had become ‘stuck,’ as well as a C123C code, which indicated that the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system/vehicle stability control system was experiencing some random problems.

It was a ‘hard code’ because after it was cleared, the B2339 code would reappear as soon as the ignition was switched on, making it difficult to remove.

This data indicates that the slave node ‘sees’ a horn switch that has been ‘shorted.’ Furthermore, bidirectional controls are an absolute must-have for every current scan instrument.

After that, I looked at wiring schematics to see how the electrical and bus communication systems were put together.

As I continued on, I realized that the horn would not honk when the key was pressed.

Another 30 seconds were necessary before the cycle could be repeated, indicating that the TIPM was most likely in charge of controlling the 30-second cycling event, as previously stated.

As soon as the ignition switch is turned on, the CCN ‘comes to life.’ DIGITAL LOGIC (DIGITAL LOGIC): As many diagnostic technologists are well aware, we sometimes have to put an issue to bed in order to address it.

The door latch sensor had activated the inside illumination, thus the TIPM was responding to that order.

While the CCN goes to sleep when the key is removed, the TIPM remains awake and responds to any command, such as the key fob unlocking the doors or the driver opening the door with his hand.

Among the nodes of the speed control switch is a ‘slave’ node, which translates the voltage instruction from the horn switch into a low-speed Local Interconnect Network (LIN) communications signal.

The CCN then converts the LIN signal into one of three separate CAN signals, which are subsequently delivered to the TIPM using the LIN translator circuit.

The speed control switch is equipped with a ‘slave’ node that communicates with the Cab Compartment Node or ‘master’ node, which is located in the instrument cluster, to send data.

On the other hand, if all of the various gadgets on a contemporary car were hardwired, it would necessitate the installation of extremely enormous wiring bundles to handle the switching operations.

The true mystery, of course, is why the horn didn’t work even though the key was in the ignition.

Despite this, the key-off horn switch command is relayed to the CCN, which then sends it to the TIPM for processing.

When the TIPM’s ‘digital logic’ detects that the horn switch has been stuck after 30 seconds of operation, it disables the horn relay for another 30 seconds before allowing the relay to be engaged once more.

But why isn’t the horn going off when the key is pressed?

Nonetheless, with key-on, the CCN is now completely ‘alive,’ which means that the TIPM can now ‘read’ the B2339 code stored in the CCN’s diagnostic memory, which is a significant improvement over the previous situation.

With that in mind, we should expect to see a lot more of this sort of ‘digital logic’ or operational strategy embedded in modules in the future.

Now that I had a better understanding of how the horn system responded to different inputs, I needed to figure out which component of the horn system had broken.

Jeep altered the wire harness in the upper steering wheel component, according to service paperwork, probably because it is a high-failure item.

The resistors in conventional speed control systems lower the reference voltage to specified voltage levels that are used to direct the various speed control operations.

When the speed control switch is activated, directives are transmitted through the LIN bus data line to the CCN, which is housed within the instrument cluster.

It was the replacement of the horn and speed control switching and wiring systems that marked our crossing of the Rubicon.

LESSONS TO BE TAKEN AWAY: The next week, I was contacted to diagnose a right rear wheel speed sensor on a 2008 Jeep Liberty that was not displaying the right-rear wheel speed on a scan tool when it was tested.

In the course of a few minutes of investigation, I noticed that the code C0102b was saved when the key was turned on and the sensor lead was unplugged.

The ABS module in the Liberty, like the TIPM module in the Rubicon, disables the reference voltage when it detects the B2339 code, much as the TIPM module in the Rubicon disables the horn relay when it detects the B2339 code.

Crossing the Rubicon taught me another another lesson, one I had already learnt some weeks prior.
