Remove or Install Front or Rear Wheel – Generic Instructions
When removing and replacing a wheel on your car, always follow these general directions, but consult your owner’s handbook for more specific information. Always use the right equipment while raising your car, and only remove the vehicle off its jacking points one wheel at a time. If you are working on the opposite wheel from the one you are currently working on, always use two wheel chokes on both sides of the wheel to prevent the car from rolling and falling off the jack while you are working on it.
- Never use an impact drill to remove wheel locking nuts or bolts
- Instead, use a breaker bar to pry the nuts or bolts loose by hand. Do not leap or use your foot to break the breaker bar
- Instead, use your hands. Removing debris, oil residues, and corrosion from the contact surfaces of the rim and wheel hub
- Check that the brake disc holding bolt is securely fastened
- Apply anti-seize paste to the wheel rim, ensuring that the paste is centered in the wheel rim
- Clean the bolts or nuts on the wheels and inspect them for damage, replacing them if required. Wheel bolts that have deteriorated should be replaced. Attention! It is not recommended to use oil or grease on the wheel studs or bolts. The rim of the wheel must be flat against the brake disc in order for it to function properly. Using a crosswise sequence, screw in the wheel bolts or lug nuts and uniformly tighten them by hand in order to center the wheel rim
- Using a calibrated torque wrench, tighten the wheel bolts or lug nuts in a transverse sequence to the prescribed tightening toque. To ensure consistency, inspect and tighten all wheel bolts or lug nuts in the same order. If required, retighten to the specified tightening tension. Use of pneumatic or electric screwdrivers to screw in and tighten the wheel bolts is not permitted under any circumstances.

Wheel nut torque settings! Which do I use
With no intention of deviating from the OP’s post, wheel nut torque wrench settings exist for a reason. I speak from personal experience after having the front wheel of a coach I was driving changed on the side of the M2 motorway; the wheel was put on and tightened in a hurry due to the dangers associated with changing a wheel on the highway. I started out driving along the side of the Channel Tunnel, and by the time I got to Fleet Services on the M3, there was a terrible noise coming from the wheel in question.
- In addition to the time lost and annoyance created, I had to arrange for a tyre firm to come to me with a tyre to install on the punctured tire that had been removed and then refitted.
- The same fitter returned to my rescue once more, and when he was almost finished, he said that he had “forgotten” to torque the wheel nuts the first time because he was more concerned about getting hit by a car!
- If you ask me, they were treated rather gently!
- If you ask me, it beggars belief why anyone would choose to ignore properly tightening any wheel nuts.
I should point out that this occurred on a large vehicle; however, the consequences are the same, regardless of the size of the vehicle. Torque wrench settings for wheel nuts are there for a reason, and they serve a purpose.
Lug Nut Torque Specifications on a KIA Sorrento
The Kia Sorento is a midsize SUV that is manufactured by the South Korean automobile manufacturer Kia. The Sorento originally appeared on the market in 2002 as the first generation. The second-generation Sorento, which has been completely revamped, went into production in 2009. The torque of the lug nuts on the Sorento is critical while changing a tire. The manufacturer’s guidelines should be followed. If the lug nuts are overly loose, they may fall loose throughout the course of the journey.
Additionally, lugs that are torqued to a variety of degrees might create wheel wobbling or cause additional damage to the wheel, tire, or hub.
Definition of Torque
When it comes to turning an item, such as a bolt or a flywheel, torque is defined as a measure of the force necessary to do so. Torque is measured in foot-pounds, inch-pounds, or Newton-meters, which is the metric counterpart of the foot-pound. A torque of 90 foot-pounds indicates that if you had a 1 foot long wrench and applied a force of 90 pounds perpendicular to the wrench, you would obtain a torque of 90 foot-pounds as a result. When it comes to autos, the term “torque” is frequently used to refer to engines.
Torque Wrenches
A torque wrench is required when a precise amount of torque is required to tighten a bolt. Torque wrenches are classified into three categories: beam, click, and dial. Torque wrenches with beams are those that have two beams connected to the socket. The force is applied by a lever beam, and the torque is shown by an indicator beam, which is located on a scale on the lever. Click-type torque wrenches include an indicator on the handle that can be adjusted to a desired torque; once the desired torque is reached, the ratchet travels freely and a spring causes the wrench to emit a clicking noise, indicating that the required torque has been attained.
As the wrench is rotated, the display reveals the amount of torque applied.
Torque wrenches may be purchased in car parts and hardware stores, among other places.
Kia Sorento Lug Nut Torque Specifications
All Kia Sorentos have a lug nut torque of 85 foot-pounds, regardless of model. The torque standard may be found in the maintenance part of your owner’s handbook, or it can be obtained at any service facility. When changing a wheel, it is usually preferable to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern rather than torqueing them in a circular pattern around the wheel. Using your hands, tighten one lug, skip to the next and tighten the third, then the fifth, then the second, and finally the fourth.
