To ensure consistency, inspect and tighten all wheel bolts or lug nuts in the same order. If required, retighten to the specified tightening tension. Use of pneumatic or electric screwdrivers to screw in and tighten the wheel bolts is not permitted under any circumstances.

The factory torque for aluminum wheels is 97 ft pounds, which is quite a lot. That’s what I’d recommend because your techniques are almost certainly made of metal as well, right?

How to Properly Torque Lug Nuts
It’s one of the most horrifying things that can happen to you as a driver, whether you’re barreling down the back straight of your local racing circuit or negotiating three lanes of rush hour traffic on the way home later that night. How do I find out? Why? Because I’ve been there, having witnessed a wheel on a pickup truck driven by my father break off the hub and go across the highway and into the median while he was pulling his race car. However, even though the truck and trailer were saved due to the prudent use of driving expertise, it was an incredibly frightening moment that might have been avoided.
A recent wheel switch had taken place on my father’s truck, and the shop in question had neglected to ensure that the proper amount of tightness had been applied at each corner of the vehicle.
How Do Lug Nuts Work?
After being torqued to the set factory level, lug nuts are designed to’stretch’ a particular amount, depending on their design. This stretch enables the nuts to form a mechanical connection with the threads on the lug that is both robust and durable. The connection is not made if the bolt is undertorqued; if the bolt is undertorqued, the bolt does not extend, and the connection is ‘loose,’ enabling vibration and movement on the lug. Whenever a bolt is overtorqued, it expands to the point that its tensile qualities are compromised.
If lug nuts are not properly torqued, the nut can continue to loosen itself as a result of the vibrations caused by driving, which can dislodge the wheel from the hub and cause more vibrations as the wheel spins erratically, causing the wheel to come loose from the hub.
Overtorquing can produce results that are similar to those described above.
This might result in warped brakes as a result.
Do It Right The First (And Second) Time
To ensure that your lug nuts are correctly torqued, follow these steps. Simple, and it relies on repeatable methods that you should follow every time you switch out rims or visit the track to ensure a successful outcome. The first step is to check that the threads on your wheel studs are as clean as they possibly can be before continuing. The presence of grit, grime, or metal chips on the threads might make it difficult to torque the bolts accurately. You should also avoid lubricating the threads or applying any form of rust-proofing to them, as this will prevent a proper mechanical connection between the lug nut and the threads from being established.
- You can remove lug nuts with power impact wrenches and torque sticks, but you don’t want to use them to reinstall them since there isn’t a method to fine-tune the amount of torque being applied.
- You should be able to find this information in your vehicle’s owner’s handbook, which is normally in the range of 75-100 lb-ft.
- A 5-lug configuration is often tightened in a’star’ pattern, with the top-corner lug being tightened first, followed by diagonally across the rest of the setup until all of the lugs have been tightened.
- For 6-lug wheels, you’ll want to start horizontally with the bolt that’s directly across from you, then move diagonally, then horizontally again, horizontally a second time, and finally a final diagonal to complete the installation.
When you use these patterns, you can ensure that the rim is correctly seated against the hub while applying torque. This allows for the most precise application of tightening force.
Re-Torque And Drive Safe
It may come as a surprise to hear that simply torqueing new wheels once is not sufficient. It is recommended by most manufacturers that lug nuts be re-torqued after 50 to 100 miles of normal drive. Due to any settling that may have occurred between the rim and the hub as well as any initial vibration that may have caused any lug nuts to go loose, this is what happened. In the case of a track car, when stresses are high during each session, checking lug nut torque after each session is not excessive.
Following your arrival at your location, it’s a good idea to check your torque once more.
Put $50 into a torque wrench and make it a habit to inspect your rims before you leave pit lane on a frequent basis.

- I discovered it on page 373 of my 2007 manual. It’s funny how things work out. When it comes to alloy wheels, the typical recommendation is to verify the torques every 100 miles or so. However, I never discovered them to be dislodged from my 2001 Prius. I took them off very regularly as well, as I am a fanatic about tire rotation

It makes me question what my mechanics and tire fitters were up to (I don’t recall ever seeing them calibrate torque, for example). They are truly amazing, and if you lift the wheel off the ground first, they will remove any lugnut that is stuck on it. I purchased a Makita 18V Li-Ion impact driver, which produces more than 110 ft/lb of torque. And it doesn’t twist in your hand, and it makes a cool sound as well
- I was under the impression that the right technique was to go as tight as you possibly could, then another half turn. Tom
- However, the twist dial on my torque wrench is so difficult to see – it’s too small – that I just set it to 80 lb ft. My FJ likewise requires 76 lb ft, so at the very least I don’t have to memorize two sets of figures for the two cars in the same situation. Take it from me, they even use the same lugnuts for my steel wheels in the winter
- However, you must be careful not to overtighten the wheel nuts. Costco’s kind employees extended the studs on an old Toyota 4Runner that I used to own. After that, they went on to break over the next two years. As a result of the failure of their torque wrench (Snapon), and since he was one of the nice large ones, he was able to overtorque the nuts. They did pay the Toyota dealer to repair all of the studs, but (it was a pain to remove the hub because it was on the front wheel)

Excellent clicker type torque wrenchUse an excellent clicker type torque wrench and get it calibrated on a timetable recommended by the wrench maker. I work with little aluminum fastners on a regular basis, and having a decent, accurate torque wrench is invaluable. Although lug nuts are less sensitive than tiny aluminum fastners, they should nevertheless be tightened with as much precision as you can manage. Purchase a torque wrench with a range that corresponds to the amount of torque you need to set. In my experience, calibration businesses prefer to configure it to be most accurate near the higher end of the wrench scale, which is where the most precision can be found (you get a report back with your wrench when the calibration shop returns it). Additionally, if you apply a little dab of waterproof lubricant to the threads, this will prevent them from becoming stuck in the future. Costco and their reluctance to rotate tires because our torque did not fall within their tolerances were two examples. We purchased a pair of tires from Costco for our aging vehicle. Costco refused to rotate the tires because we were unable to supply them with the torque specifications they required. They claimed they had lost a multimillion dollar civil dispute in which one of their customers’ cars’ wheels fell loose after being torqued by the company. Since then, they have instituted a policy of not torqueing tires unless they are in compliance with the specifications.
