VW Golf ABS Light On
Shops are discovering that the main cause of an illuminated VW Golf ABS light may be rust in the fuse box, rather than a problem with the ABS module or wheel speed sensor, as most customers believe (VW calls this a fuse bracket). The fuse box, which is located under the hood above the battery, is susceptible to corrosion as a result of road salt spray and battery gases. As the terminals corrode, the fuse box creates excessive resistance and heat, which can cause the plastic frame to burn. This can also result in a burnt compressor clutch fuse, a burned compressor clutch wire, or simply a compressor clutch that will not engage.
Avoid replacing the alternator on a regular basis.
If you fall for this, you will have to replace the ABS module, which will still not function properly.

Check the ABS fuse first
Prior to reaching the positive battery terminal, the high-amperage power passes through the fuse bracket and into the battery. If the fuse bracket exhibits symptoms of corrosion, heat distortion, or insulation melting, the heat generated by the fuse bracket may cause the fuse terminals to be burned.
Check for corrosion in the fuse box
Immediately replace the whole fuse bracket if you see any evidence of corrosion, heat distortion, insulation melting, or damage to the fuse. Perform a voltage drop test to determine the cause of the voltage drop. Under load, the voltage loss should be close to zero volts. Excessive resistance is indicated by a voltage drop more than 0.30 volts. If this is the case, the fuse box should be replaced.
Replace the fuse box
Disconnect the negative battery line and replace it with a new fuse box when it has been installed. For example, the Dorman Products 924-680 is one such product. Brakes work fine, (haven’t tried the ABS but I suspect that it isnt working).Looking at forums I gather that the typical ABS error is a wheel sensor, but surely the car has to be moving to get a sensor error?Just checking 12v supply now, main ABS fuse seems OK so next suspect is the relay – but then what? Would appreciate any advice.|

So me comparing the resistance of both sides was just a red herring designed to screw me up!Fixed now – the local VW specialist resolved yesterday fitting 2 new sensors.For info – Im not in the trade just a private DIYer, – its my sons car, been off the road for 2 yrs while he saved for the insurance. I think the ABS lights had come on some time before that but of course he never did anything about it until it came to requiring a new MOT!Somehow he seemed to think it was more important to buy fancy wheels and lower the suspension – or am I starting to sound like Victor Meldrose?|
