Pull the fuse out and examine it to determine whether it is dead (if it is dead, you will be able to detect a physical break within), or if you are unsure, use a multimeter to determine the status of the fuse.

According to your experience, you were able to get 5 years out of it, which is approximately the lifespan of a battery.

The engine bay becomes quite hot, especially after shutdown, and the battery has little chance of lasting that long.

I suppose there may have been a TSB for an early battery replacement, but it appears that the OP is no longer covered by warranty, and I don’t believe that the TSB truly extended the warranty on the battery as well.

This vehicle’s battery should be in the trunk, for two reasons: first, they don’t need an extra 50lb up front and on the driver’s side, and second, it is more convenient.

Some of the Mk5 hatchbacks might have their batteries relocated to the rear by using the battery box from the VR6 vehicles and running the wiring and other necessary components by hand themselves.

As far as the Mk6 and Mk7 cars are concerned, I’m not sure whether this is a possibility because the cutout may not be in the trunk at all, given that I don’t believe any of them were shipped to dealers with the battery in the back.
